First post on this forum!

Hello everyone,

I was wondering. If I wanted to get the 1984 Moroder version of Metropolis, which LD has the better picture and sound? The American release on Vestron? Or the Japanese release?

The Japanese seems to have nicer packaging, which I do enjoy- a nice thick card jacket compared to the thinner looking US one. But I would like whichever has the better presentation.

That’s a good question and I’d like to know the answer to it.

The Japanese will have subs, not sure if that will make or break anything for you.
I would check and get whichever has the digital audio, since this is the only reason you would buy such a title.

I had the USA one years ago and it was fine without any issues, but that was when it was selling for over 50 bucks and I couldn't resist to cash in.
Now I'm sure its dirt cheap as its been released on DVD and maybe Bluray, I'm too lazy to see the BR.

I only have the first Japanese pressing with no digital audio. The picture quality is reasonable but not revelatory. It is a sample pressing. The reissue with digital goes for way more. More than I am willing to spend.

Thanks everybody for the replies!

Taking into account what other members said here and exploring the database some more I think I’ve settled on trying out the first US press on Vestron. The later re-release, according to the database, says the picture is nice but the sound is out of sync until Freder switches places with Georgi. That’s a pretty long time!

So I nixed that one.

The japanese release I was considering was the SF078-0041 pressing from 1985- but I saw that it was reported as a rotter more often than the Vestron. So I changed my mind.

I wonder if this Vestron (VL5090) is the one that rein-o referred to in their post? It does say Digital Sound.

The Kino blu-ray goes for insane money and is long out of print that was why i bought the Japan laserdisc for cheap. I'm not spending 70 dollars and up for a blu-ray disc.

This is part of the reason I’m after the LD, myself! I always regret not getting the DVD at least back when my local Barnes & Noble had it.

But the other part of it is that I’ve always wanted the LD as well, anyway. :)

Just a big fan of the movie, and this version was, to me, cool companion piece to the (near) complete original. I saw both around the same time.
