It is great to see this getting the 4K HDR treatment. The third film is, alas, included in this 487 disc set. With three different cuts of it, as if one cut wasn't punishment enough.

Maybe I am alone in this thought, but rather than 7912 different versions of Part III, I'd have liked to have seen the Saga and Epic cuts (I have both on Laserdisc already anyway) included here.

Especially considering the limited set costs more than the GDP of Zimbabwe. I don't want the packed in tat, but I would like the extra discs you don't get with the, still outrageously expensive, standard edition.

Thoughts?

I agree, but Coppola hates the TV cuts so I'm not surprised by their exclusion.

The Saga and Epic editions? Ah here those were brilliant. Well, the Saga was, as that doesn't include part 3! Or is it the Epic? I keep forgetting which is which.
I loved the extra footage. Especially the bit where Vito kills the bloke dressed like The Man From Del Monte!

I'm always happy to see they keep this stuff on LD only so our discs retain some value and all don't just go to a buck.

I believe the Japanese is the Epic 2 film, I had both at one time but kept the USA 3 film cut.

The only downside with the Epic and Saga box sets is that the Italian language scenes are not subtitled in English (or the language of your choice of course).

I've seen the films more times than I've had hot dinners so am not too fussed about the lack of English subtitles. I guess if this UHD set had the Saga or Epic as branchable that would make the Laserdisc sets redundant. Part III has two cuts on one UHD disc which are branchable in this set so I don't think it would have been outside the realms of possibility to do it in this box set.

The price is bothering me for the deluxe set. I would hold out for a price drop but there is no indicator to say how limited this set is. Is it one run and done? I'm sitting an exam on Monday. If I pass I might pre order it as a treat for the hard work the past few months. Might go see Part I in the cinema too if it comes round my way.

Aside, I found this great featurette that explains how The Godfather I and II negatives were very nearly lost forever! A great watch, take a look. Incredible to think we nearly lost the original negatives to two of the greatest films ever made! Yes, two. Part III can jog on! :D

One other thing about the video below, it talks, albeit very briefly, about the film on CED and Laserdisc!

WOW they can fk themselves for that price.
I don't even think all the DVD and LD versions would get that much money in a collection, even with the TV cuts.

Just crazy and we all wonder how the rich stay rich or get richer.......

Agreed. And that price is discounted. I want to find out more about how limited the set is and if the price could drop further as 140 lids is nuts for 2 great films.

Standard release is $86 retail so expect sales as low as $65 on release day in two months. Limited edition is $140 discounted. Probably $120 on release week. They have the same number of discs and the same content. Get the expensive one if you care about the packaging and added books and prints. I think these are more than reasonable prices. I don’t understand the argument here. You never bought any new release in your life before?

Is that 100% confirmed? The limited edition is the only one with the different cuts of Part 3 apparently. For me, the packed in tat isn't worth the additional premium alone. I'm assuming the same as yourself that the prices will drop a fair bit by around April or May.

Edit: Ah I stand corrected. The original Paramount press release wasn't clear and i read a lot of confusion over the different editions. It seems that the two editions are the same. The tat is the only differentiator. Standard edition for me then please.

I haven't since around 2004 or 2005.
Oh I have to correct myself, I did last year with The Keep on R2 DVD after Ted posted it, love the film but I've pretty much stopped buying
LDs unless ted tells me they are not on DVD like Berlin Blues or they are anime not on DVD or Bluray.

So it does happen but its probably in the lower 5% of my collecting habits.

So the good news is the new release pricing has not changed much since 2005(or 1995). Adjusted for inflation, you can even say new releases are cheaper now.

Oh my! You are in for a treat...except for Part III.

IMHO Part 2 is the best film. However I love the HBO Saga/Epic version as you get all the juicy extra footage to devour in a juicy 7.5 (or 9.5) hour chronological fiesta of cinema excellence. Get the 2 Laserdisc sets and watch those after you are familiar with the Italian language scenes so you don't miss the subtitles (unless you also speak Italian or read Japanese). Or there's probably a moody HD copy robbed from HBO Go/ Cinemax when it was streaming there about 5 years ago or so.

Either way, enjoy it. I wish I was going in to these films for the first time again....except for Part III.

Which version will you buy? Standard or Lux-o-tat?

Yeah if you don't need new you can get even cheaper, been buying a lot of stuff at thrift stores for a buck or less when they have sale days.
Buying used on ebay is also cheap, just buying used in general saves money when you buy it and watch it once and then stick it on the tat shelf.

So many people take good care of their stuff its not even worth it to buy new anymore unless you must have it first day
and I'm not a kid anymore so I can wait to buy it from somebody who has, needs to move and unload their stuff.

This is very sad to read, you must watch it.
It's hard to watch the movie versions after seeing the combined version as it really fills out the story and is just absolutely amazing.

But any version of the films are a must.

Small update on the new 4k sets. Jeff has decided to put up an image of the back of the standard box.

It confirms that the content is the same as the Lux-o-tat edition. Now you can watch Part III not once, not twice but thrice!

According to Jeff and his aggressive monopolistic pricing, it means John and Jayne will be paying about a €55 (discounted pricing from Jeff, not the RRP) premium for a cardboard box, a booklet with photos everyone's seen before, and 3 mass-produced lithographs that probably cost about 5c to make en masse.

If it was something like Years Of Lead, and had every Maurizio Merli film in it and a fake 'look like Merli!' Mustache and die cast Alfa Romeo model car in it then yes, take my damn money! I'll pay whatever it takes.

Actually come to think of it, how about Raro USA pull their finger out and give us that Napoli La Camorra Cfida, La Cite Risponde blu ray (that reminds me, I've to send them my two weekly emails about that, a la Shawshank Redemption) but throw in a pack of Marlboro, a figurine of Mario Merola literally crushing skulls like paper cups with his bare hands, a 1:1 scale crucifix and a D&D adventure rule book called 'Mario busts open some heads in a shipyard'.

I'd sell my lungs and kidneys for both those Poliziotteschi box sets. I'd wager they'd be manufactured properly too, unlike the ruined booklet in the Arrow Years of Lead box set.

Sorry I've completely forgot what I was talking about. Oh yes, here's the photo from Jeff:

My Godfather question today;

If buying the laserdisc box set of all three movies, what should I be looking for? I'm seeing several options out there.

What do you want?

If you want all 3 films I would get this box set: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/24508/LV ... Collection

Cheaper option would be to get the single releases, this is just II :Godfather, The: Part II (1974) [LV 084591-WS]

If you want the extended cut only on LD and maybe VHS then this is the version you want:Godfather Trilogy, The: 1901-1980 (1992) (Uncut) [LV15147-7]

If you want just the two original films cut together as the Epic then this is the version:Godfather, The: The Epic 1901-1959 (1990) [PILF-1147]

But this is in English and Italian with no English subtitles.
