I've watched Michael Palin's tremendous Around The World In 80 Days travel documentary about 97 trillion times. I've listened to all 487 hours of his diaries via Audible (great for passing by the hours when you are training for an ultramarathon by the way). I even met the man himself at a book signing after a show he did here in New Delaware talking about his life and travels.
The bloke is just immense. End of.
Anyway, I hadn't read some of his notebook entries before and today I stumbled upon this entry during his time on the journey in Hong Kong. He states he was absolutely cream crackered and went back to his hotel, The Penninsula, for the night.
What did he do when he got back to his room? No he didn't put a toilet duck up his arse, parp all three verses to God Save The Queen out of his rusty buttonhole and order some PPV blue on the television.
No. He decided to watch Laserdiscs instead. Specifically, the David Byrne film True Stories. Source:
https://www.palinstravels.co.uk/book-1362This elevates Mr. Palin to Laserdisc royalty status I think. However it also begs the question, which Laserdisc was he watching? LDDb carries two entries, one for USA and another for Japan. Given his location at the time of viewing, does this mean perhaps an HK version of True Stories exists on Laserdisc but hasn't been added yet?
