Not sure what forum this topic should go under but...

Sorry if this post is a bit jumbled.

Tony Scott made some great films and some films that will always be in the publics memories. As in most cases, those two things are rarely the same. His films had a certain look to them that made them instantly recognizable, even more so than his brothers'. Top Gun set a standard that other action films would follow and copy for the next 20 years and for that alone he deserves credit. Whether you liked his films or not, his impact to cinema made him one of the most important directors of the 80's. Although critically overshadowed by his brother, his films consistently where box office successes. His films scream laserdisc to me and so I felt it appropriate to post this in the forum.

My personal favorite film of his is True Romance. I've seen it countless times and still enjoy it. Written by Tarantino, it has the dialog and situations that would set a standard for 90's independent films and yet has the fun and budget of a big studio flick. The cameo's are amazing and watching it with a group of people is like a mini film history class in itself. It's not just the big stars like Gary Oldman or Christopher Walken, but actors who went on to be big after this movie came out that I love to see. Sam Jackson has a very small but wonderful roll in it and Brad Pitt makes the third act of the film work for me. When people talk about Brad Pitt, I always bring up True Romance. It's too bad he's so good looking because it's obvious watching his performance here that he had all the makings of one of the greatest character actors we've ever had. Tony Scott's signature lighting and staging are evident throughout the film and I love every second of it.

I'm sure everyone here has at least one of Tony's films on disc. I hope a few of you can share your memories.

I recently watched Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and Domino and looked him up and thought 'wow he's done some great films', not a prolific director but I don't think he ever made a bad movie. My least favorite would be Spy Game. I don't have his first and last movie. I'm getting them right away to complete my collection. I'd say my favorite is True Romance. I saw it years ago and it's one of the best movies ever made. Time for a Tony Scott movie marathon.

He will be missed.

Here's his complete Filmography:

The Hunger (1983)
Top Gun (1986)
Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
Revenge (1990)
Days of Thunder (1990)
The Last Boy Scout (1991)
True Romance (1993)
Crimson Tide (1995)
The Fan (1996)
Enemy of the State (1998)
Spy Game (2001)
Man on Fire (2004)
Domino (2005)
Déjà Vu (2006)
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
Unstoppable (2010)

Very sad news. It's always tragic when someone feels that they have to take their own lives. Whatever the circumstances at least he is at rest now and he has left a lasting legacy that won't be forgotten. I always found it strange that his films were more consistently successful than his brothers yet it is Ridley that has become a house hold name.

 I'm shell shocked with disbelief I looked around to confirm this, I can't believe it, why? Why didn't he call his brother Ridley and talk about it why didn't he call a close friend but why won't help now, but why, why take your life?

Reports say might be depression (I myself go though manic depression on must days and its really makes me feel degraded) so I guess until the note is made public as his brother Ridley must be devastated with grief right now, and would like to keep some issues out as its of personal nature it might be some weeks until the world knows why Tony took his life as his, films brought lots of thrills of entertainment over the years.

RIP Tony Scott

it's a shame, saw the post last night but it was late at the time.
he did some amazing films, but i guess that's what makes a real director.
like his brother, i don't like all of the films but the ones that i do are beyond amazing.
and none of them are in the same genera.

i didn't know that he directed most of the films listed, i may not own them but always think about parts in
some of the films that always stand out.

i would say the ones that stick out for me are:
The Hunger (1983)
Top Gun (1986)
Days of Thunder (1990)

some of the others are great but the actors turn me off.

i didn't know he did the last boyscout, i'll have to watch that again.

Reports now as to why Tony Scott took his, life a few days ago, was that he had brain cancer that is not treatable. :(

I like quote by Rildey and that is so true Ridley is kinder taking it slow while his brother Tony pushes it fast with hip fast music. :)

Quote:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/9489187/Tony-Scott-wife-unaware-of-Top-Gun-directors-cancer-after-suicide.html

They ran a production company called Scott Free Productions and had been working on a film adaptation of the book Killing Lincoln. Sir Ridley once said of his brother: "I'm more classical and he's rock'n'roll."
