Saw the thread about Vertigo topping Citizen Kane for greatest film of all time..,

Neither one would get my vote, not because they aren't great, which they are, but I prefer another, and I suspect some others here would as well.

So how about your pick? Any film is valid, just pick only one, no matter how tempting to put down more than one.

My choice:

The Wages of Fear (1953) - full length version of course.

Ben Hur (when I was in grade school). My best friend at the time drew the movie poster with the chariot(sp) race. AND the ten commandments (I am NOT thumping the bible, just like the movie) How Green Was My Valley, Grapes of Wrath, I really like the old ones. Sunset Boulevard(sp). I've been having my once a month whiskey so spelling might not be right on.

Yeah, but if you had to pick only one of that group, which one?

GREAT! pick one
Out of that group? How Green Was my Valley. Close behind (didn't mention before) Of Mice and Men.
Why can't Hollywood make those any more? Have to have special effects and explosions. And damn Sony pictures (I cringe at the mention of Sony). OH, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, Penney Serenade, North by Northwest... BIG fan of Cary Grant?   OH, Stalag 13, Breezy, Thunder Road... If I had the money to make a movie (you'd all be bored to tears)

I'm not saying but I would say why not greatest film of the month of that year, that was equally entertaining?

The Towering Inferno 1974 great cast great disaster great visual effects great sound mix great music/score great dramatic ending with clocks ticking to blow out tons of water and put that fire OUT! Great end credits the way it ended on the last notes set the tone just perfect for the film to watch again and again.

"This is not right? Its too hot"!

JAWS well already ranting about this on another thread but for 1975 was it great for me? Well yes and no how many times did I see it not as many times as I'd like to once I think, with my dad.

EARTHQUAKE opened while The Towering Inferno was still roasting Richard Chamberlain's dodgy wiring  it sizzled below EARTHQUAKE that was doing audiences in Sensurround and I saw that 3 times Epic but it was of same year, but did it have lots dialouge panning nope, did the towering inferno have deep low sub bass nope.

Okay maybe best film of the month is not working out too well. Maybe film of each week of the month?

 (Flame Suit On) Sorry I just can't say STAR WARS is best ever its been ruined over the years and to me its deep wound that will never heal.

OK, Going out on a limb here......
Very difficult to sum up your whole movie experience into "one" favorite.
How can we sidestep the technology that has added to movies enjoyment over the years.
That is what I am going to do with my choice though.

My vote is for "Death Takes a Holiday" 1934 B&W Starring Frederic March & Evelyn Venable.

A most sublime theme that is delivered by the most epic acting by Fredric March.
The lighting and story co-mingle to take the viewer up to and nearly across the threshold of "Death" in a GOOD WAY !!!!
A must see for old film buffs.
Meet Joe Black is a strike off from this venerable film of old.
Joe Black does not convey the feeling of the first inspirational piece however.

Thanks for the thread rixrex..........

Towering inferno, saw that in the theater and had to look away too many times (like Jaws, too "real" for me. I could imagine burning up in a building or being ate up by a rubber shark). After the movie read the book (Glass Tower?) Book was more intense than the movie. Jaws (the book) the shark "expert" had an affair with the cops wife

That said, I'm maybe the only person on the face of the earth who has NEVER seen ANY Star Wars movie from beginning to end :wtf:
I guess that makes me an outcast (there go all my fans :lolno: )

No it doesn't its like someone that has all seen Citizen Kane and I have never seen it. (Fame suit on)

I guess the Chief wasn't amused.

I noticed the credit on the start "Glass Tower" and its also mentioned in the film by the fire fighters. "Oh, Jesus the glass tower". "WHAT"? The glass tower. "I sure hope that fire is on the first floor".

I find the rubber shark more believable than "Deep Blue Sea" we're, blar, blar going to get ou...WHOOSH UMPPP GOBBLE! :wtf:

I could never pick just one. It would change from day to day, depending on my mood, too. It could be Jaws, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, Citizen Kane (yes, Kane!), Sherlock Jr., Strangers on a Train, Goodfellas, etc., as I love them all.

I love that movie! I saw it almost by accident. I went to see Diabolique at a revival house, which I enjoyed, and Wages of Fear was the second feature on the bill, unbeknownst to me at the time. It was late, and I considered going home, but then though, "What the heck, I get to see it for the price of one." I've never felt such tension when viewing a movie before. Every rock they slowly drove over with their trucks filled with nitro had me sweating bullets. I'm glad I stayed.

Did you ever see the remake Sorcerer? It's good, but no classic like Wages.

Almost impossible to choose just one film from so many greats, but I think for me I would have to choose Wim Wenders' 1987 masterpiece "Wings of Desire," though I much prefer the original German title, "Der Himmel über Berlin," which can translate as either the Heavens or Skies over Berlin.

I've never really liked films that are a love letter to a particular city, but this one really struck a chord with me. It's not so much a love letter to Berlin but more looking at the state of the city at the time through the inner thoughts of the people who live, work and die there.

I've never seen the US remake, "City of Angels", but the trailer was sickening enough to put me off for life.

This film, combined with Solaris, is what finally pushed me to give Blu-Ray a try as the HD presentation by Criterion on these titles is excellent (though I still say they mucked up with the tinting in Solaris, it's still a breathtaking transfer). The only downside is that Criterion Region A lock all their Blu-Rays.

I could never make my mind up between Sleuth (1972) and Deathtrap (1982).
There are literally just a few actors in both and almost the entire setting is inside one house yet they are compulsive viewing.
