When I buy a movie, I attempt to get either the DVD or the LD. Sometimes the DVD is the only format for the movie that i can buy. BD is of little use to me as I do not have an HDTV yet.

The VCD of episode 1 that I have is my only VCD. When I bought it, I wanted to see Episode 1 very badly and it was not out on DVD or LD at the time (that I knew of). I guess that i was in a hurry and should have waited. Oh well, that's the way it goes.

My reasoning for getting into VCDs are a little outside the box.

This was when I was in the Navy and before the advent of DVD. We were pulling into Hong Kong, and I, being a big fan of Hong Kong cinema, was anxious to get my hands on a lot of movies that were hard to get ahold of in the states. Sure many were on LD, but I couldn't put out US$50+ per title. Else, I would only be getting like 4 movies. And VHS was out of the question since their VHS tapes were PAL rather than NTSC.

Then I realized, my Sega Saturn had VCD capabilities with the right card installed. Found the JVC VCD/Photo CD card in video game store for around US$20. So with VCD movies being US$5-10 each, I could get a lot more movies than I would getting them on LD.

So I sacrificed quality for quantity. Since we were well before the age of widespread HDTV use, I didn't mind so much.

Haven't bought another VCD since 2003's Thai movie Ong Bak tho.
