One small downside to the loose wraps that some Japanese releases came in are the vented airholes.
These allow dirt, dust, fingerprints, or friction wear to mark the actual cover. It is quite common to open a mint sealed disc and find marks or wear where those holes were which tend to run down the mouth of the LD cover. So the only true way to keep a perfect copy clean is to put the wrap in another outer sleeve for added protection!

Used to like sealed Japanese "loose" wrap better until... my basement was flooded.

All covers in tight, no-hole, top-opening, full plastic wrap were safe. All the "sealed" Japanese ones swam for hours in the water that spilled in from the holes.

Now I add an extra wrap on sealed discs :eh:

I just ripped open a japanese copy of "james and the giant peach". It smelled like it was just off the press, the ink smelled so good =) Now it will never smell like that again, its like the "new car" smell.

Hmm. It's a Guild release and they are fairly rare. :? I would keep it sealed until you feel it is right. I always have this problem when I buy and New 'Disc, so that is why I buy used most of the time. That and I want to make sure it's rot free.

Hello laserdisc_fan,

There are some LD collectors who purchase some rare movies but, never view them and that maybe because they have purchased certain titles as possible investment reasons.

This is my own personal view;

I have purchased some rare laserdisc Titles, of which have cost me hundreds of dollars.

I purchase to watch ''NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY COST!''
I currently have a number of rare title reserved with a seller, of which are very high in price.

To me I purchase to watch and appreciate the fact that only 5000 were produced of certain titles.
I look after all of my collection ie: replace inner sleeves with high quality anti static, and then place the outer sleeves in a protective re-sealable cover to protect the cover art.

I say open and enjoy.

Also a word of caution: You never know the movie may have disc rot so, if you don't open it you will never find out.

All the best to you.

I remember having this problem when I picked up a sealed PAL copy of Rocky IV. It just looked so perfect, I didn't want to open it. Eventually I gave in and opened it and I remember seeing a finger print on the disc and thinking that must have been from the guy (or gal) who packaged it in 1986 when it was released...

Anyway, I played it and the quality was awful. Very grainy and VHS like.
