my hardest to find japanese LD was dirty mary crazy larry.
only ever seen 2 or 3 copies, i had 2 of them now only one.

also japanese pied piper, only ever seen 2 copies for sale, i have one.
i think the older earlier LDs were the hardest to find.

That last release of Queen:Greatest Flix is fairly rare and surfaces only once in awhile here and there.
The Limey is a standout rare late release as well.
There are more but these two stick out off the top of my head.......

As rein-o mentioned, many early releases have fadeded into obscurity........
Love to find old ones that are complete and untarnished as most Japanese people kept their items very very well......................

Thanks myrtle1beach

Rarity is only a factor in the appeal of a classic car. There are cars that only two were made of that are only worth $20,000, while other cars made in the 100,000s can be worth the same or more.

Its not "collecting". I "collect", but I'm not going to pay $1000 for a Spice Girls LD just because its rare. When something is actually good I will, unfortunately, have to pay more because other people will probably want it. I don't just say, "tell me what's good, take my money, I have no actual preference".

I was surprised at how many titles I had never seen or heard of that are in the first Japanese Pioneer catalog.

I've been looking for a copy of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry for five years and have never seen one. I did finally found a copy of Pied Piper recently and paid a whopping $3. I was pretty motivated that day.

I'm a sucker for those early MVC style jackets and of the 90 or so that were released in Japan I probably only have about 20. I've been actively looking for them for at least 6 years. To me they rare but that's because there really isn't a market for them. I'm sure there are more of them out there than some of the 1999 released discs but it seems that someone is always selling the later discs. To each their own.

wow, that's a deal, but also i bought both of mine before the DVDs came out and paid a boat load.
i think i paid around 75 for my pied piper, the other copy i saw sell on ebay right before i bought mine
was for around 125? but that was almost 8 years ago.

dirty mary crazy larry was another one i picked up 8 years ago, i just checked when i updated the page.
i can't believe it was that long ago, at the time i found another copy that had mid range rot on side 2
but i sold that for around 50 since it is rare, or was rare.

as we all know we can buy copies of late releases all day long, but those early first pressing discs are
almost impossible to find, and most don't want to get rid of them.

I've been pretty lucky. The most I've ever paid for a disc was $40 and I've only paid that much twice (Damn you Little Darlings!). I have a lot of titles that I think should be much rarer than a "might-as-well-get-the-DVD" 1999 release, but as of right now, people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a copy of South Park. Everyone has their passions. One of the rarest Discovision feature releases is The Lost Weekend but I found one sealed on the bay and only paid $20. But hell, I'm happy!

Most people don't even know they have first pressing discs judging by listings in the database. The cover might be the same and the disc the same transfer, but if it's got a barcode on the back it just ain't an early disc. Sure, finding a copy of the pan & scan Grease is easy, finding one that doesn't have a barcode and has the original Discovision catalog number in the mint marks, not so much. Got to admit, I was kinda bummed when I felt that I had them all, but now when I find them (since I can't seem to stop checking every early release I find) and pick them up for Disclord who also shares my mainia. haha

I have some laserdiscs I've been looking for quite a few years and haven't seen a copy yet.....so to me that would be a rare one.

I remember the Ordinary Europe squeeze LD I bought. Was over 4 years looking, till one finally appeared, which ended up costing me 115.00 price. That's the most I've spent on a LD, and I normally wouldn't spend that much........but if I hadn't bought it someone else would have been right behind me to grab it.
I have not seen another copy since so sometimes you have to pay it if you want it.

i want to say the most i ever paid for a disc not new in the store was around 100.00
that dirty mary crazy larry was still sealed when i bought it, but i wanted to see the film.

the only other time i ever paid for discs was back in the day going to tower or ordering some japanese anime
discs new.
never had a large collection until ebay, it would sting paying retail for some of those anime and godzilla films.
but at the time that was the only way to see some of that stuff, it wasn't as easy to find, or watch on youtube.

I just learned the early discs are as collectable as the later ones. FYI i would not buy a Spice Girls either but am glad to try to stay on topic here not to analyze this thread on collecting laserdiscs.

or even more, how many times do you see X-Men? twice a year.
i've only seen some older discs once in 10 years :wtf:

i noticed the value of LDs drop heavily once bluray came out, then people did't buy them
as much on ebay for crazy prices, and then also people would stop selling them since
they wern't able to make the profit they once did.

i still like to buy discs that are not on DVD but don't want to pay as much for them anymore.

Almost from the very beginning of collecting laserdiscs I started to create a wishlist on LDDB.com.
I wouldn't have known where to start without it and I began removing titles one by one from my wishlist as I located them.

Unlike perhaps some other folks I started buying what I perceived as the rarest music titles first and then worked my way backwards to the easier ones which I am currently locating at the moment. There was definitely an element of risk involved in this approach as I was new to collecting laserdiscs and didn't always know what certain discs were actually worth. Overall though I feel it was the right strategy to take because many of the discs in my collection I have never seen appear again. In fact I regret turning down some titles I was offered which seemed expensive at the time but now seem something of a bargain in hindsight.

So how did I come up with my rare list. It wasn't hard. I got to know lots of other music LD collectors worldwide and many I communicated with via email.
They would ask if I had ever seen a particular disc and if I didn't own it and it was an interesting title I added it to my wishlist. I suspect they did the same when I was sharing certain titles from my own wishlist with them.

7 years on I believe I own most of the rarer music titles now and what remains of my original music LD wishlist is really just some common titles I've still to buy, a few elusive oddities that may not have even been released at all and some promo LDs which I suspect I will be trying to obtain for the rest of my life!

An important thing to stress is rarity does not necessarily mean a disc is valuable - it just might. There are a few discs in my collection which I would never part with yet I doubt if anyone else on the forum would even give them a second glance.

My biggest regret was not doing the same with movies that I did with music LDs however time and funds did not permit this at the time. I've only been collecting movies for around a year but have essentially attempted to adopt the same approach.

Best wishes Laserdisc_fan. I have finally acquired some titles that i shouldve tried to win at a earlier time. TGIF & barely found the remastered A Star is Born. Then some titles a seller had several to list & i overpaid for the first one but you never know what some will offer next.
