Post subject:  Odd High Prices for some Horror Laserdiscs

One thing in my search for certain titles on Laserdisc that's been confounding me for the last few years were the LDs for Halloween 4, 5 and 6. I've seen these go for pretty high dollar amounts not only on ebay, but on some online LD websites.

Is there any reason for this? Is it just because its a popular series? Did they have a low print run? Do they have footage/features that are not on the subsequent DVD releases? All of the above?

Same goes for Friday the 13th. I can understand why the Japanese LD of the first title in the series used to sell for big bucks was because for the longest time, it was the only way to get the movie uncut (it has since been released on DVD, uncut and widescreen.) But it seems like the subsequent titles in the series still hold their value for the most part.

Any reasons for this other than rabid horror movie fans wanting the titles and thus pushing the price up?

Halloween 6 didn't get included in the 6 DVD Halloween boxset I have - instead they put 1-5 + H20 which was annoying so that might have increased the demand for H6.
Now so sure about 4 and 5 though - I suspect they were straight to video releases so didn't get anywhere near as many pressings as the first three movies.

Same thing for Nightmare on Elm Street 1-5.

It feels like the 80s and 90s horror nostalgia crowd is bigger than ever. Pre-internet explosion I don't think many people even knew the name Kane Hodder, but now everyone does. I'm contributing to this as well since I just recently got into Laserdiscs and the titles I've been buying/wanting are mostly horror. I don't think they pressed/sold a ton of Friday the 13th 4 or Nightmare 5 back when they were new releases, but now a lot of horror fans and collectors want those titles. I'd say it's the combination of relatively limited supply combined with increased demand over the years has kept the prices high.

Except for Jason vs. Freddie, lol. Tons of those to go around. Or the howling. The hellraiser stuff is pretty rare as far as I can tell. Then of course the other stuff. Just got a copy of I was a teenage Zombie!

I remember buying halloween 4 and 5 at camelot music store in the mall back in the early to mid 90's, they both were in the punch out/cutout bin for $10.00 each. Now they sell for $50.00 -$100.00 each

We are still talking about Laserdiscs right? Freddy Vs. Jason was released theatrically in 2003 and to my knowledge never made it to LD.

Thing is, Halloween 1, 2 and 3 aren't fetching those prices. Just 4, 5 and 6.

Though some have tried to gouge with H20, but still that settles around $15 usually.

The DVD of Halloween 5 I believe is not anamorphically enhanced, and are in Dolby Digital 2.0. So you might as well track down the LD for the superior sound at the very least, as there is likely no difference in picture quality. That could keep the prices of these LDs higher. The Blu Rays of Halloween H20, and Resurrection with butchered by Echo Bridge in the US, so that could be another reason they stay high.

The halloween 5 divimax edition dvd is mastered in hd, anamorphic with 5.1 dolby digital. They also did part 4 like that too

I got tired of trying to get the available Friday the 13th series on LD and went to Big Lots, and picked up 1 & 2 and 4 through 8 for $3 each on DVD so I could watch them at least. Still need to get part 3. For my disc collection, I got 1-5 on CED real quick, and they look as good as the LDs would on the rack anyway.

Did manage to get all the Texas Chainsaw available on LD, including the Super nice looking "The Return of the TCM", the correct title for the 4th in the series. One of the very few Japan LDs I'd ever buy. Has almost as great a cover as the widescreen version of Part 2.

Love the subtitle on the left side of the cover there. It says "Legend of Leatherface"!

Another thing, I just now noticed that the Japanese release of Halloween II is LETTERBOXED. I've never come across that EVER. Not even on YahooJapanAuctions. I guess that makes it somewhat rare and sought after?

Man, they used the image of the girl being burnt alive in the whirlpool for the cover--who made that artistic decision?!?! :o

With "Terror in the Aisles" as a supplement no less!

Guess my Japanese "That's Shock!" Laserdisc isn't worth so much anymore!

Post subject:  Re: Odd High Prices for some Horror Laserdiscs

Horror discs in general command a premium as the genre collectors are the hardest of hardcore completists. Any of the Japanese Fulci discs is going to see $100's on open auction. The same holds true for the super rare titles like Cannibal Holocaust or Faces of Death. In terms of the Halloween series netting high prices, it doesn't seem the case really. It looks like $30 is about as high as most will go on a 4 or 5.
