Every Halloween I try a theme of some sort to dig out movies that haven't been seen in a while, you know, easy things like all Friday the 13th films or a Karloff compilation, etc. This year I am going to try a different approach with the theme of True Horror Stories, or Stories of Terror and Suspense base on real events. I am avoiding the supernatural "true" stories because of their dubious validity and going with ones that are terrifying versions of true events. So far I have these on tap to view, most on LD but not all 1. The Honeymoon Killers 2. Helter Skelter 3. Dead Ringers 4. 44 minutes (If you have not heard of this, it is a gripping version of the events around the North Hollywood B of A shootout where two psychos with armored clothing and a slew of military weapons held off the whole police force, and well worth viewing) 5. Jaws (yes, Benchley based it upon the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916) And for Halloween night (since our town no longer has trick or treaters to interrupt us) 6. Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer - A really spooky film, along with 7. Henry Part 2, an LD which I have not yet seen. What are you watching this last week up to and including Halloween? |

Often I'd run in this order 1) The Thing From Another World (1951) as it also happens to appear in Halloween (1978) DVD R2 special edition B&W and colour version in stereo that sounds good in Dolby Stereo / academy ratio. I try and put something else in-between this Halloween. I might slip in ALIEN (1979) original DVD region 1 not the bluray. 2) ALIEN DVD R1 Dolby Stereo 5.1 / scope 3) Halloween (1978) DVD R2 remix Dolby 5.1 / scope 4) Halloween II (1981) DVD R2 Dolby Stereo 5.1 / scope and if I'm feeling up to it I'd run The Thing From Another World again. I like story and dialouge and the creature in the suit James Arness and the crazy professor that tries to reason with it. Okay so I might be looking at near 7 hours of spooky not to spooky films. |

I know that it is a little late for the Halloween themed movies but if you haven't seen Motel Hell (1980) [ML100901] it's a good movie to watch anytime. It's a little more on the cheesy side but the way the motel owners trap and hold each resident captive is pretty sweet. |
