I can relate to early U.S. Domestic LaserDisc releases having myriad imperfections commonly.
Hold my breath every time one is playtested.
In my experience with early release Japanese imports, none have let me down !
And I have viewed many.
Unless the film imperfections were not filtered out during transfer of course !
Doubt Reco banchu would pass on a lemon though it is always possible.
Would not worry on that score, they would make it right if one bad egg got through !
Enjoy your Bronson addition myrtle1beach ......................

don't want to bring it over here but take the risk :D

i've had very few older japanese LDs with rot or playback issues, you still have to take the risk but
it's very low.

i want to say the only 2 i can think of right now that had issues were:
red sun, had major rot but it was the french dub Japanese LD so it wasn't that big of an issue.

dirty mary crazy larry, side 2 had rot, i bought a sealed copy from Japan and i think it was from
recobancho, it played fine with super super light spots, about 1/2 from 1-10
but that disc was early from 1982.

I have aprx. 1000 japanese titles, I have come across 2 which had laser-rot

Erik The viking, side 2 was so heavy rotted, more then I have ever seen in my life, 100% unwatchable.
the second I believe was an old live ld with rainbow, dont remember the title.

I had exactly the same problem with the first copy I got of Erik the Viking! I think it was even the same side! This was very surprising, since it was pressed at Pioneer Japan. This just proves that even the best manufacturing plants had an occasional bad day! It wasn't rotted as heavily as what you describe here, but definitely very noticeable. I got it from Nicolas Santini (n$a), and he found a replacement copy of it for me which plays perfectly  ! As long as you are dealing with a reputable seller like him, they will stand behind what they sell, and will take care of it if there is any problem. In general, I have seen more cases of rot with older discs pressed at Kuraray than at the other Japanese plants, but it is most often very light (1/5) and not really distracting. I have had very good luck with Pioneer Japan and Mitsubishi discs. Rot on these is extremely rare, even on the very old ones.

David :)

Mayby it was a bad plate-master or something, I actually watched it today, showing a friend how bad rot can be... The picture was watchable but the sound was just bips and dots. The picture looks distorded and the upper left corner was round, the other corners were as they should.
