I saw Krull being mentioned in the Godzilla thread viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1901 having only seen the film once or maybe twice once on VHS PAL many Krull moons ago... and then on TV in Digital Nicam 725 in Dolby Stereo, and it was partly scoped in 2.35:1 but still heavily cropped on the sides. The image was bright and clear as far as I can recall some 25 years ago now when it was put on BBC1 in the early evening on Saturday? I had a gander on eBay for Krull but shipping postal for one only copy is bit steep the disc price is fair but not enough to chose from? But it does state 2.20:1 which points to 70mm. Quote: Technical Specs Runtime: USA: 121 min Sound Mix: Stereo (Dolby Stereo) Color: Color (Metrocolor) Aspect Ratio: 2.20 : 1 See full technical specs ยป http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0085811/ Quote: Columbia TriStar has created another excellent Special Edition DVD for Krull, with an anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, and more special features than you can shake a Glaive at. The picture is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It is far from perfect, but most of the problems appear to be caused by the source material rather than any sort of inattention to the transfer. The film shows a number of nicks and scratches. Interior scenes seem a bit darker than they should be. Dark scenes in general are quite grainy. Shadow detail is poor, with shadowed areas looking dark and murky. Fine textures tend to look soft and indistinct. Through much of the movie most colors appear to be slightly faded and undersaturated. Blacks often do not go quite all the way to black. On the other hand, scenes shot on location outdoors looked quite good with great definition and color fidelity. The orange glow in the lava cave where Colwyn retrieves the Glaive is rich and brilliant. Given the great look of some parts of the movie, I think that the weaknesses in other parts can be mostly attributed to cinematography, condition of the print, or both. The Dolby Digital 5.1 remix is a nice touch, but is limited in its effectiveness. The audio lacks dynamic range. It sounds thin, muffled, and a bit tinny. Even this new remix is mostly front-centered, with very sparing use of surround effects, even in battle scenes. Dialogue is clearly understandable, but overall the audio is just not very impressive and it seems a shame that Columbia went to all the trouble of creating a Dolby 5.1 audio mix if the results are this underwhelming. Full verdict here http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/krull.php Also being listening to the opening main title which sounds cool and mysterious the first few seconds sounds like 2001: A Space Odyssey and when the chior voices cut in it then sounds like Brainstorm and then the horns making me think of Willow and then other brassy instruments as the score strikes up, Titanic? Krull - Main Title (James Horner) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RllRPZw--9Q I must have now listened to the opening theme 15 times this morning and for a brief moment I swear I can hear Vertigo at 6:20 -6:28. I can't help thinking the poster looks like Darth Vader standing behind and Ken Marshall old some quad blade thingy looking look some lightsaber with rays of laser light beaming out, and the princess standing beside him and it also has Taken/2/Phantom Menace Liam Neeson in it. KRULL [Part 13] (Final_Credits) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCWStMvfZ64 Yeah! Even the end credits at 2:13 sounds like STAR TREK II on the opening with deep 40Hz tone pressing on the body and the high end note playing along at the same time. Compare the first few notes and decide among yourselves. Star Trek 2 - The Wrath Of Khan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxN1UpV8BY4 I synced all two and started Kurll and so when it plays at 2:13 I start the opening STAR TREK II and it sounds weird with choir on top of Wrath of Khan, it does my head in. |

Krull is a wonderful flick that is all too often underrated. I especially enjoy wacky elements such as The Beast's henchmen, the Slayers, with their (single shot) laser bolt firing lances. The production design is also top notch, and really reflects the massive budget they had to work with - The Beast's lair is quite trippy! The stop motion spider is also of note. All in all, there is a lot to be said for the look of such pre cgi efforts. I also cannot help but be amused at a comment one reviewer made, to the effect of "I wonder how The Beast plans to consummate relations with the kidnapped princess" I've got the DVD, and I'll have to keep an eye out for the LDs of this great slice of 80s fantasy, as one can never have too much Krull. You'll not find a set like this in today's movies...
