Post subject:  Question about Black Christmas

Hey there folks. I haven't been able to find a review of this disc online, and I haven't been able to find a copy for myself either, so I figured I'd ask on here. This is my favourite horror movie of all time, and I love watching it every Christmas with my siblings and friends. I just have a question regarding the audio: How does it sound? Is it a good audio track? I have the Blu-ray of the movie, and while I have no major gripes with the video, I have always been less than impressed with the audio for this disc, because the 5.1 track is lossy, and adds new sound effects, and the mono track is lossy, and a little hollow. From what I can tell, the Laserdisc has the only lossless audio transfer with the original mono, so I was wondering if it sounds good enough that it is worth what it'll cost me if I ever do find a copy?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I have it, but I haven't watched it in a while. I'll pop it in when I get home and see what I can tell you.

If you have the blu-ray, doesn't it also have the mono soundtrack as an option (at least the DVD Beaver review says it does)? Sure it's Dolby Digital Mono, but if the 5.1 is crap, the mono soundtrack on there should work better.

It does have the mono soundtrack on there, and it does sound ok, but it is a little bland. I know this is a title that was never really given the best treatment on DVD and Blu-ray, but when I saw that Warner had put out the Laserdisc, and that it is a 1999 release, I was hoping maybe it has a good sounding lossless mono track.

So I queued up my Black Christmas LD with the Somerville DVD that I have (which should have the same DD Mono track as the Somerville BR) and watched the first 15 min.

At first I thought the DVD sounded cleaner, but then I switched back and forth a few more times. The high end sounds like voices don't seem to "settle" properly on the DVDs DD Mono track (I often have that complaint about compressed music.) And the DVDs track has an audible hiss while the LD doesn't . The DVD is slightly louder, but the LD is definitely the cleaner sounding of the two.

PS: I have both my LD player and DVD player hooked up via optical to my Elite 27TX receiver, so this is as about as apples to apples a comparison as I can make.

Perfect! Thank you very much for doing the comparison for me! Now I just need to track down a Laserdisc copy of my own! I know there's a few on ebay, but $40 and $70 are both more than I'm willing to spend on a movie I own 3 times on DVD and once on Blu-ray. I'll have to see if I can work out a trade with someone maybe.
