I know of two Thief of Bagdad & The Eagle i have both of those on laserdisc & i read people complaining on Amazon about the dvds not using the soundtracks or the laserdisc master they said the film prints were of lesser quality than the laserdisc release. Can someone tell me more on this subject & are there other silent movie soundtracks & prints only available laserdisc? |

Can someone tell me more on this subject & are there other silent movie soundtracks & prints only available laserdisc? One problem is that by their nature silent films typically had a live orchestra or small ensemble playing (depending on the size of the theater) and although printed scores were sent with the films, often changes were made locally or the given score scrapped completely. Later, when sound on disc - not Vitaphone synchronized - started, there was much more studio control, but even then some small 2nd run theaters might not have been able to afford the sound equipment. So for silent films it often comes down to "what version do you prefer?" It's also very possible that a DVD could be inferior to an LaserDisc with silent films - most are Out of copyright and many silent film LaserDisc's were done using prints from private collections - if that collector isn't available or the film has deteroriated, then an inferior source might have to be used. PM Ratkins and ask him more about the subject - he's a major silent film buff. He's not available until the weekend but I'm sure he'd love to chime in when he gets back. |

he's the one with napoleon as his avitar. i don't know much about the music but i do try to focus on getting silents on LD, if i don't like the music i can always put on a CD. the only one so far that i'm not too happy with is for nosferatu, it's too goth and synth, i like synths but it's just poorly done for that one, but i only have the DVD of that. |

the one i have is the DVD, and the score is bad, i need to pick up the LD. the LD release that i believe is the best is:Nosferatu: Collector's Edition (1922) [ID8572DS] it's 81 minutes, i had the other release at one time but it was 60 minutes. |

The silent laserdiscs im describing i believe were shown on public tv back in the 1970s they had a bit of history on the film at the start. I think the laserdiscs of the 2 & what others were there only official release. Another reason to keep laserdiscs alive. |
