Do you have to own every Laserdisc in the Criterion collection as an example?

As for me ... I try not to be. Not too long ago I bought the Universal Signature collection LD of The Jackal (1997) ... because it was a Universal Signature Collection LD. I remembered that I had seen the movie when it first came out in the movie Theaters ... I recall that it wasn't very good and was a poor remake of the original. The LD was in mint condition, had some nice special features, nice gatefold ... etc. However, the movie was real ZZZZZ. Okay ... I've learned my lesson  never again.

I might want to own all Laseractive Titles, in US and JP versions.
A very expensive collection to complete.

I unfortunately am one of those people. I even make up qualifications to make a complete set like, "all 1981 discs". I always start small thinking that the collection I want isn't that large and won't be a big thing. Like, "I will just collect the early Criterion titles that came in the original cover design." Then when I'm close to finishing and those last couple of titles are hard to find, I always find a reason to keep going. I'm down to needing only 2 titles that came out in 1981 and I've just recently found out that I only need 20 to complete 1982. It's a disease, I should start a 12-step program for collectors.

I initially set my target at popular western music but I soon found that was way too restrictive.
I started to branch out into some classical music, jazz, blues, world music and of course Asian music.
In fact I could honestly say some of my most watched and treasured titles are Japanese artists I had previously never heard of!

The thing about the laserdisc format is that it really broadened my horizons and introduced massive diversity to my music collection.
I would spend maybe 3 months just collecting Japanese dance music, then I would move on to hip hop or thrash metal.
It is constantly changing and that is what keeps it so interesting. It made me visit bands catalogues I had never previously explored after watching certain titles.

I do like to try to acquire a complete set of related titles but I think I may have set myself an impossible task!

Not at all. I'm a big anime LD collector, but there are plenty of discs I'm perfectly happy not owning. Now, if someone offers them to me as part of a lot, I'm not going to throw them away, but for example, I currently have volumes 1 and 2 of something called Variable Geo, & I have no interest in buying the final volume.

I've currently got 199 titles in my Wishlist, some of which I'd jump on if they ever came up, others of which are just there as reminders because I noticed them once & said "oh, that's cool".

I really like Variable Geo :P

I am not a completist myself though, but sometimes... I like to get my hands on everything there is of a specific series.
Evangelion was a good example of that.

I am not really a completist when it comes to collecting Laserdiscs because I usually only buy discs I want to watch or display. I also collect videogames which can be dangerous to be a completist in to say the least. Haha. Yeah, I really only go out of my way to collect things I really like and want to watch. The only thing close to a set I have is all 6 Megaman games for the NES.

I'm a completist in the sense that if something really interests me (especially Star Wars and certain anime franchises), I want to have an at least one example of everything involved, regardless of format.

For example, I wanted all of of "Neon Genesis Evangelion", but of Japanese releases. I found the Region 2 DVDs of the TV series cheaply on eBay once (the original ones in the CD-sized cases) and bought the movie boxset, "Genesis 0:X", and the live symphonic concert on LD to complete the collection.

For the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series, I decided to "settle" for the US AnimEigo DVDs while getting DYRL and Flash Back 2012 on LD, which were still much less expensive than what the Japanese DVDs of those two currently command...

Glad to see I'm not the only one. Yes, I am a completist, and I blame the LDDB. I set a goal to collect every US released anime laserdisc after spending an afternoon trying to find every US released anime laserdisc in the database. By the time I was done, it seemed like a realistic goal of 269 releases of which I already had about 45. I'm now 130 releases in and am starting to slow down. There are still plenty of titles I'm excited to buy and watch, they just don't become available very often.

Eventually, I'll get to a point where all I have left to collect are the worst of the worst (Dog Soldier for one.) We'll see if my completionist attitude changes when I reach that point.

I am a total completist.

I have every DTS title both from US and Japan - except for the PAL one from Germany
I have been trying to find every Star Trek disc from every country.
I have been trying to find every Star Wars disc from every country.
I have been working on a complete DiscoVision library since 1995.
I have been trying to track down every version of Cameron's "Titanic" (currently at 10).
I have all of Universal's "Signature Collection" series.
I have all versions of every James Bond film from the US and Japan.
I have all versions of both Terminator films as well as several other Cameron titles (Abyss, True Lies, Aliens) from the US and Japan (including a German AC3 of True Lies).

In general I don't have urge to collect, for example, every title from certain distributor or so as I prefer to stick with movies I'm interested of, collecting full catalogues would result me having dozens of titles I'd probably never watch. When collecting series of sequels or filmographies from certain directors/actors/studios things are a bit different and I like to have couple of alternate releases of same title in there, but in most cases I still haven't tried to snatch all the available ones but rather to keep just a selection of two or three versions - preferrably with notable differences between contents or such - to maintain at least some kind of sanity with all the hoarding. Only "collection" I'm trying to complete at the moment is to get together every Hammer movie released on LD which is shaping up quite nicely, most of the stuff I'm still missing are easy ones so I haven't hurried with grabbing them but just bought some every now and them between nailing some bigger fishes.

Let me thank you, kind sir. I use your site all the time.
Is the only title that you don't have that was pressed and released Archeological Dating \ the Big Dig?
With only 34 copies and average 70-90% defect rate that means at maximum that there would only be 10 acceptable copies available. :o

I remember when I used to purchase the same titles with the different sound.

Armageddon: US Dolby Surround(gatefold black cover,) Dolby Digital & DTS
Japanese version in Dolby Digital.
Independence Day: US Dolby Digital, DTS UK PAL Surround Sound, Picture quality is diabolical
Japanese version in DTS with Gatefold cover and completely different cover art
of which I prefer.
There are many others that I have, but will only purchase the movies of which I like.

I have most of the DTS titles and am working on finishing the remaining Japanese DTS titles to join the US versions. DIE HARD box set in DTS is next on my list.

Regards to all

I am a bit like this. I like films or TV show complete sets within their particular franchise, if I can. I know that it's not possible with BABYLON 5 sadly, due to Warner brothers' ridiculous release schedule...starting at both ends then trying to meet in the middle...but stopping before they got there!

I would like a Die Hard II in DTS so Ihave all three with it...that type of thing.
