I have an old PAL pan & scan LD release from 1982 which is fair to say looks pretty rough around the edges. How much of an upgrade is the 1995 widescreen re-issue?

If anyone can post some pictures of the remastered LD that would be great as well..

wow, nobody has this one??
i've seen both LDs for sale but never bought it.
i too would like to know, not just PQ but also the difference in length.
seems like the widescreen is shorter than the pan and scan version.

Ive got it...but Ive never seen the original on Laserdisc...If someone can post screenshots of what they look like, that would be great,I can then give alot more of a detailed review .....I have seen the original on videotape, which gives me an idea about the picture colouring quality.....the dvd and bluray versions sadly dont do this film justice,as Im sure the prints by now are not in the best state they were all those years ago..they all look rather plain browny and bland in its colour palette...but the 1995 Widescreen I have, has alot more colour than any recent version, skin is pink instead of the almost washed out white of the original videotape Ive seen.....the blacks are quite black as well instead of charcoal in the original and almost blue in the recent copies......

Here are some rough screencaps for you, mercury from my old PAL pan & scan version of the Laserdisc

http://s8.postimg.org/rjzwcqx9h/wolf_LD_1.jpg
http://s13.postimg.org/i3g25yuhz/wolf_LD_2.jpg
http://s21.postimg.org/5fmbq0ot3/wolf_LD_3.jpg
http://s14.postimg.org/ct4m2c5u9/wolf_LD_4.jpg
http://s7.postimg.org/4x51had9n/Wolf_LD_6.jpg

With the exception of the first one, these photos actuelly make this old Laserdisc look better then what it really is. In motion you can see a lot more scratches and specs and video noise and grain etc. However you can see all that captured in the first photo.

Also is the widescreen remastered Laserdisc version really 90 minutes? or is that a misprint and its really 93 minutes? If so what is cut from the widescreen remastered version? Because all other complete versions are 93 minutes long.

Well.....looking at the jacket it does state 90 mins.....and it is the american release,so it really must have 3 mins of footage missing, but does the original have any logos at the beginning of the film....because it got me thinking, are the running times stated on the back of laserdiscs, the running time of the disc,or just the movie minus logos and trailers.....I know there is a small time difference between PAL and NTSC,that is just tho the difference in the way it is played back at different framerates, and does not mean NTSC are longer in length, although alot of the time PAL is cut for UK release,we english must get easily offended or something....pussies....lol....there are 9 chapter stops on side one and 10 on side two....It also states something on the back Ive never noticed before and quite strange....it says "WIDESCREEN FILM TRANSFER FOR LASERDISC IN ORIGINAL 1.85:1 ASPECT RATION BY LARRY YORE AT ADVANCED DIGITAL. SUPERVISED BY MATT FRIEDMAN.SPECIAL THANKS TO BARBARA GUTHERIDGE".......wierd.....but looking at your screen shots it is hard to check the quality as the shots themselves are not a straight capture.....but netherless, looking at them, the difference isnt that great.....her dress isnt as dark tho on my copy, but that could be my settings/your settings......after seeing the high definition transfer of this movie, the laserdisc wins easily, the laserdisc is full of more colour that doesnt look like it has any DNR applied to it whereas the recent masters have their faces look almost shiny and smudgy....plus there is more noticeable grain and spots on the recent versions,I never remember seeing anything like that in this copy,Ive taken a few shots, not alot of them were in focus, and your right it looks a bit sharper on the tele than in the photos....I cant upload tho for some reason,I try and attach the pics but it says they are invalid.....do they have requirements for attaching pics..?.

Thanks for that, I just hope that the 3 minutes cut from the remastered widescreen laserdisc are not too important. Anyway yes, my screenshots aren't much of a help, but is the widescreen Laserdisc version been cleaned up of the print damage that my old pan and scan version has? Because as you can see in picture 1, there is a lot of scratches/grain/video noise/black specs etc on the old pan and scan version I have.

Just upload the pictures to a hosting website like I did. Simply use http://postimage.org/

Thanks for your help with the pictures....Ive had a look for scratches or grain.....but I cant see any evidence in the scenes youve shown...so Im guessing they did a good job cleaning it up without losing too much detail...but one thing I noticed from your screenshot of the woman in the pub,in my pics you can make out three coloured lights behind her quite clearly, but in your pics, they all seem to appear quite the same colour, can you confirm this when you watch it at home,or can you indeed make out the three different colours........

here is the links for the pictures.................

Here is my setup.......

I've been a bit busy but thank you so much for the effort you put in taking the pictures, they look great. As for the woman in the pub, I'll have to check again when I get some time, but I think its all the same colour but I'll have to confirm that. If it is then I'm guessing its the actual transfer quality from the old pan and scan version and/or my TV settings, I have a feeling its a bit of both.

I love the range of colour in that remasterd widescreen LD and the black levels look good, its also pleasing to hear that the remastered widescreen version had been cleaned up of print damage which my old pan and scan version is full of.

Would I be able to see some screenshots of Saving Private Ryan & Starship Troopers when you have some time? I've heard both are stunning transfers on LD but have never seen any screenshots of them.

Also as a side note: I notice you have the PAL Jumanji: Special Edition in your collection, I do too and I've noticed not a lot of people do. Its a superb pressing with great PQ, nice special features, a classy gatefold with awesome art work and its ROT FREE.

Its mad that you mentioned Jumanji,me and my two children watched it this morning and they loved it.!.....it does have a good transfer, alot more stable with the PQ than say JAWS,the signature Collection, sometimes it has a few shots that look faded and/or washed out in colour, not to mention the jaggies.......But then it is a CLV...Im glad they released Jumanji as a CAV,I much prefer the CAV versions,Im also glad that my player will flip the disc automatically....Ive never watched the Saving Private Ryan on laserdisc, like so many I buy them but dont watch them straight away,Ive never seen the Starship Troopers film either, but Ill throw them in later and take a few pics......Just out of curiosity, what 11 films do you have?,it wont let me view your list.....x

A auto flipping player is a MUST especially for CAV discs purely for convenience purposes, having said that, my CLD-925 is a bit inconsistent when it comes to flipping sides. Sometimes it has no problem and other times it struggles which forces me to manually do it. Also in case you weren't aware: the NTSC CLV Laserdisc pressing version of Jumanji is known to be a real serious rotter that is close to unwatchable. So hunting down either one of the 2 available PAL pressings (regardless if its the CLV version or the CAV version that we both own) is a nonnegotiable if one wants to watch Jumanji on Laserdisc.

Hmm that's strange, but anyway, here is the 12 LDs I have listed in my collection.

Alien (1979) [8760-85]

Aliens (1986) [8761-85]

American Werewolf in London, An (1981) [790 404 1]

Atlantic City (1981) [LVPB 001]

Goldeneye: Special Edition (1995) [ML105544]

Jumanji: Special Edition (1995) [EE 1071]

Men in Black (1997) [82656]

Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) [081 252-1]

Poltergeist (1982) [ML101749]

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) [PILF-2830]

THX 1138 (1971) [NJWL-11162]

Evil Dead, The (1981) [SF078-5044]

I have a ton of other music discs of concerts and things but I don't consider them apart of my collection as they were given to me by someone for free. I have those stored away in a room.

I havent had any flipping issues thank god. Mine is the Pioneer 2950..maybe its a sign of wear and tear...?...Could you please upload pics of the star wars film,I have that one and just want to compare the picture quality from different players and tvs....I know that disc has a darker than should look, here are the pics from Saving Private Ryan ......

Saving Private Ryan,a bit difficult to capture images as there is very little that is still in the film, due to the nature of the way it was shot,so some pics are blurry and not as sharp as they are on the tv. Also because of the high contrast look which spielberg used,it looks about half as better Ive noticed on tv,its also darker on my tv than in the pictures,I havent retouched the images at all......nice colours when there is colour in the image and the picture is nice and sharp with no picture noise,it looks softer in the pics tho........

Thanks again, I can understand that it was a bit of a difficult task with Saving Private Ryan. I should mention that I was watching Star Wars Episode 1 last week and if I knew earlier I could have taken the pictures for you then. Anyway, regardless, I will get around to it, its just that with being busy and with my fragile Laserdisc player seeing a lot of use lately I've decided to give it a bit of a break because you can never be too careful with older electronics you know...?

Try either one of these 2 alternative websites for uploading the pics if you like..

Okay....now time for Starship Troopers...I personally have yet to watch the film, and it will be awhile because I sorted all my laserdiscs in order of when they are released and only just watched Alien.......looking at the pics it seems to have one of the best transfers Ive ever seen.....no signs of digital noise at all, very bold colours and strong skin tones, deep blacks and very white whites....again some of the images are not as sharp as they are on my tv..

The title......

This one shows the colour which nearly burned my retinas off.....

Heres a collection that shows the great skin tones in various light and dark scenes.........

Here some shots to show how clear and sharp the picture is,the rainbow affect on these pics are from the tv and not present on the disc......
