Terminator, The (1984) [2535]

About 3 months later, I went to Funspot. When I was there, a big friend of mine gave me about 7 of his LD's for free (which included Terminator, The (1984) [ID2940NSB]). :)

In my case it was this one: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) [UMLV 10002]

Bought from a shop called Steve's Sounds, just off Leicester Square, before I even had a player. I wish I could remember what I paid for it. Less than £10 anyway. A PDO pressing, so somewhat rotted. Nevertheless, it was enough of an improvement over the other home vieo options at the time for me to persue LD from then on.

The Domesday Project (BBC) interactive database system. After that some other educational discs (I bought my first player VERY used at an educational technology event), eventually the first non-educational ones were Star Wars, Queen's Greatest Flix, and some others I got in a job lot.

I remember school laserdiscs, including a setup at college in the late 90's with V8000's under computer control.

I think the first one I watched at home was Hunt for Red October.

I fortunately keep a notebook listing all the movies I watch with the date JUST FOR SUCH A QUESTION!

It was... Mazinger Z vs. Devilman [LSTD01007] on April 3, 2011.
Which is interesting because it's not one of the first LDs I bought (which I found in a used bookstore) but instead is one I ordered on eBay at the same time I ordered my player.

I had also seen a few unknown educational things when I was in middle/high school, but I couldn't tell you anything about them except one had close ups of cells under a microscope and used a barcode scanner? I studied cinema as an undergraduate and we occasionally watched laserdiscs in class. I remember The Searchers was on LD but I'm sure there were others. I'll say that they don't count because I wasn't in control of what we were watching!

A clockwork orange the excitement at seeing the film for the first time was unbearable. Kubrick had pulled the film in the UK. It would not get a UK release until his death! It was the first NTSC disc i imported this was around 1996.I often wonder what foreigners made of it.To be honest i found it a huge disappointment seemed silly and very dated it was never going to live up too expectations.

Ben Hur. After watching all movies on VHS in fullscreen and only mono or stereo audio, my first experience with high-end quality at this time. Incredible moment, and never forgotten until today... :D

The first LD I bought (and thus watched) was "Nadja" (1994) [ID3295HL]. When I saw that LD for sale in Tower Video, the movie hadn't been released on VHS at the time, so I picked it up on a lark, largely because I had a thing for Elina Löwensohn.

The problem was, I wasn't the owner of an LD player at the time. I had to borrow a player just to watch it (a loaner from my then-girlfriend's mom, who was a school librarian and had access to one). It didn't take long for me to pick up my own player (a Pioneer econo-model of forgotten designation and approximate 1996 vintage, with a mere $225 price tag and three outputs (one composite video and stereo analog audio)), particularly because Criterion's "Brazil: Special Edition #196" (1985) [CC1348L] was just way too cool for me to not have it be a part of my life.

That was about 17 years, 800+ LDs, and two players ago.

Some Windham Hill disc, with Michael Hedges on it, in a friend's home theater. Oddly, many years later I was given that friend's LD player and collection, but that disc wasn't among them.
