I have found half of the answer to the questions here. There is a display box for the 50 discs in the set.

WOW, an amazing looking set.
too bad the value of this is for looks only, as all of these films have been releases multiple times
on LD and DVD and i'm sure all are on Bluray as they are the "best"

That explains it. This also is in line with the Mighty Atom box sets which were also ultra plain, those went into a fancy display case too.
