I doubt A Brighter Summer Day will ever get a new release unless Martin Scorsese manages to get back the rights for it. No real loss for me since I've got the Laserdisc but it's a wonderful film that everyone should watch if they ever get the chance. And seeing it on Blu-Ray with a brand new transfer would be irresistible.

Yeah I know, I followed the Criterion site day after day back in December 2015 when it was announced as we got many hints that it would finally happen. And pre-ordered the US Blu-Ray right away without any doubts whatsoever. Been seeing it every Christmas since then (including once with commentary). It's really fantastic overall. Some of the colors in mid tones can be a bit too greenish for my taste but if that is was Yang initally wanted then so let it be.

I believe the Criterion Blu-Ray was released in UK about a year ago or so by now. There are also some more exlusive editions available in South Korea and Taiwan but I haven't looked too much into those. Do yourself a favor and buy whichever Blu-Ray is more accessible to you.

Coonskin may never get an official (and complete) release on DVD.

A proper reliese of Sho Kosugi's uncut version Pray for death 1985 would have been great

Speedtrap 1977 with Joe Don Baker/Tyne Daly/Robert Loggia was never reliesed on laserdisc or dvd

Reading back through this old thread was interesting. Some movies, like Rockula indeed never got a DVD release, they jumped from LD to BD. I also learned some things like Lady and the Tramp being a 4:3 movie. Cheers.

Have they ever released both ratios on the same disc like the recent Transformers 30th anniversary movie which had both ratios?

Yeah. It was a pretty expensive effort to make the movie future proof. Because widescreen was still new at the time it was certainly possible that things would go back to 4:3 at some point meaning any movie that was wide-only would have to be adapated or even worse would become unpopular. I don’t think there are any new elements but Walt spent the extra money to make two different shooting scripts just in case the 4:3 ended up being the preferred version. There aren’t that many movies that were litterally shot twice, especially in animation, but this is one of them.

There are tons of anime that will never leave LD. Something like Technopolice 21c for instance which had one only LD release in 1983. Well strangely enough, if suddenly has a beautiful BD release! What on Earth? Stupidly, it is only included with a figure at the moment, but TOHO would be NUTS to not release it seperatley! I hope more of this LD->BD happens. Maybe more of those "lost in a fire" anime will suddenly be found and released on BD. What I would not give for a film scanned Project A-ko BD....
