Gave The Talented Mr. Ripley a spin last night on DVD :shh:

It occured to me that this was a movie released around the time LD died
so it was time to investigate this:

At least there's a catalogue number:
Talented Mr. Ripley, The (1999) [LV331423-WS]

I can only Imagine the cover  8-)

Come to think of it there are a lot of nice movies that didn't make it ....

Yeah, lots of good movies could have made it to LD.

My fondest wish would have been Ridley Scott's Gladiator. It hit theaters in May of 2000, so a Japanese LD release was quite possible.

A few I would love to have seen released on laserdisc are:
Ravenous (1999)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
American Psycho (2000)

Off the top of my head, I wish they would have finished the US release of U-571 and American Psycho would have been a nice film to have on laserdisc.

If Magnolia would've hit Laserdisc, I'd buy it at a high price. A Japanese gatefold would've been awesome.

I think it's a shame that Episodes II and III of Star Wars were never realised on Laserdisc, Episode III and the theatrical Episode II would have been awesome..! Oh well, the VHS's will have to do.

Another topic on this part of the forum more less mentions same thing of "what would you like to see on LD", and I think this was mentioned about cancelled LD a few years ago. I was looking forwards to Indiana Jones trilogy with Dolby AC-3 I wonder what that would have sounded like? Well not gonna happen now. :|

I wonder of the asking price is still as pricey or maybe some sellers have come to there senses?
U-571 (2000) [PILF-2862] $1600 is far too much.

I got mine for 70 euro nearby. A steal at that price

£49.46 that is daylight robbery  yeah that is a good price. I'd pay that given how rare, not!

How many actual pressings of U-571 Japan Dolby AC-3 was made? USA one don't count it never made it to AC-3. :|

Back in 2002 there were some fire sales on sites like CD Japan and Playback Trading (now dead) to clear out some of final Japanese releases. They were going for $25.00 each and titles like Scream 3, Lake Placid, and U-571 were included. I was just reading an old post I made on this sale back in 2002, and in the post I noted that Pioneer Japan would be destroying any leftover stock they still had come Fall. How sad. If I only I knew then what I know now. I made posts about the sale to a few sites where there were still some active laserdisc fans but no one was interested in some of those last releases.

The USA release of U-571 was cancelled. It would have had AC-3 as all Universal titles did, right up until the end. It's was Paramount that went to Dolby Surround. Interestingly, I had contacts with both Universal and Pioneer (I was helping to run a video web site). They blamed each other on it. I always sided with Pioneer, though, since Universal releases (distributed by Pioneer) still had AC-3. But who knows given the different contracts and what not.

I do remember when I, along with most folks, passed on that CD Japan fire sale (or perhaps the majority had moved on by then and quit following the LD discussions). It didn't seem like there was really any interest at the time and dvd was really gaining a lot of traction in the home marketplace. From what I remember that was the first year dvd overtook vhs in sales, while it was also the final year vhs was the leading format in rentals. So it was a pretty pivotal year overall. I just remember hardly anyone was still focusing on LD at that time and instead building a dvd collection. Then a few years later, several folks were really feeling nostalgic for those last LDs and willing to pay a premium for them as is still often the case.

But back on topic, I'll echo American Psycho. I'll also add Fight Club (for US release) and Office Space; both movies were cult underachievers at the box office at the time and really exploded in popularity later on.
