I'm about to purchase a Hellraiser Japanese laserdisc http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/38388/TS-S008/Hellraiser
from a seller on ebay and I asked if him if it had an Open Matte or Pan&Scan picture, as I'm a collector of LDs w/ full frame displays, but he said he didn't know. I asked him if he could take a pic of a scene from in front of his television for reference and he sent me this pic.

if this pic is not enough I can ask for more from better looking scenes

My main question is, is it possible to identify the picture display of a laserdisc by looking at it, such as this one?

Both p&s and open matte should have black bars on each side of the picture. This is a widescreen tv and the picture fills the entire screen which means the tv is zooming on the picture. In other words, it is impossible to tell from these pictures. The tv should be set to 4:3 mode which will have black bars on each side of a p&s and open matte.

As for telling whether open matte or p&s, it is not possible to tell unles you compare it to another version. You really have to side by side compare to tell if it is open matte.
