Just condemned myself. I watched "You Can't Stop the Music". Thankfully that movie never had a US LD release. Got it on DVD because the LD player is still broken. When I get another player, the first LD I'm going to watch is going to be "A Clockwork Orange".

Watched the first disc of Green Legend Ran this weekend (PILA-1130A). Pioneer had some beautiful box sets. Also watched the first disc of The Hakkenden (PILA-1191A). Planning to watch the entire series over my Christmas vacation.

Been playing some sound highlight moments from Oscar winning best sound The Last of The Mohicans (1992) ntsc laserdisc. Frequency waterfall direct from RCA laserdisc player Pioneer DVL-909, chapter 10, 46m : 53s scout running with message. Nice score alone with tightly placed sound effects editing. Sub bass transducers send cool lows though seat bucket at certain tones while other low tones travel up the seat back. Bass mid across the fronts plays loudly, occasional along with dialogue and sound-effects panning the Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman, provides an exciting score with deep lows. The waterfall scene is bit of rumble track that reminds of Earthquake (1974) sensurround. Most of the lows that I have noticed don’t go far below 30Hz on high level. To some bass-heads would be grumbling but then again this, waterfall program wasn’t around much less anyone doing waterfalls around 1992 to post on the internet. The program is rather neat to see what frequency response and levels are doing. As for a laserdisc picture its fine for viewing. I don’t like the subtitling being changed and placed below the image in the black boarder area. At the end of the film there is basic matrix surround test with voicing over LCRS followed by LCRS pink noise. Ideally all channels should produce the same tone frequency response and SPL db loudness. Afterwards follows a 1 KHz sine wave with colour test-card. Well the tone is around 1.09929 KHz

I have the 20th Anniversary THX region 2 and last year brought the region 1 DVD after getting feed up with PAL 4% speed-up. The DVD Dolby digital discrete mix is by far the nearest I would say to the 70mm release over the quad-Alien-box-set and the same used for the lousy cheep bluray which has poorly cropped framing and left-right front centre/phantom mixed on top of the centre discrete SIGH, don’t waste your money on the bluray its not worth it! As for the laserdisc the framing is a bit off from the 20th Anniversary edition. The CAV laserdisc is still watchable and does included an extra musical like score in the film which isn’t on any of the DVD releases. Its the scene where the acid burns though the ship and they crew find it wearing off on the lower level, while looking up Parker notices it and there is wining like strings of score playing which isn’t on the DVD and doubtful the bluray. I’m not sure if this was heard on the Alien late night show that I saw many years ago as it was only presented in mono. As the print didn’t have Dolby track I assume to the lack of some cinemas not having Dolby stereo at the time, and the projectionist had the film playing at fader “10” if I can recall back to 1990, late night show at the ABC screen 2 Bournemouth, Aliens played in Dolby Stereo A-type which was exciting listening fun, too bad about Alien. Film is still playing at this, time and its time for side change as disc 1 sdies 1/2 is nearing the end.
