Title says it all. What laserdiscs have you been watching of late?

I just finished off South Park the movie. Quality flick that one. Laughs aplenty, but the best park is the score. Some great songs and music. The laserdisc has a sweet cover. Was disappointed though when I set my amp to dolby digital, turned the volume up to max and then...nothing. No Dolby Digital soundtrack. A Shame but the Dolby surround track still has some punch. Image looks pretty good too.

Criterion edition of Spartacus. Received the LaserDisc last week. Tri-fold cover ... excellent video/audio quality and loads of extra's on three discs.

A friend of mine got pissed at me when I told her I haven't seen Disney's Hercules yet, despite my having the Laserdisc. I'm probably going to be watching that next.

As of right now, been on a nostalgic sports thing recently so I've been watching my Japanese Pancrase laserdiscs:

If you don't know, that's a Mixed Martial Art promotion in Japan. The original rules were close to Pro Wrestling (no closed fist punches, grabbing the ropes breaks a submission hold) but it was "mostly" real (there were a few "worked" fights.)

I just now noticed that many of these LDs aren't logged here on LDDb. Guess I have some work to do!

Having just got a Blu Ray player I'm mostly exploring HD just now. I watched the Princess Bride the other night, the first time I've watched a film at home in HD, really enjoyed it. Got Highlander today so will probably be watching that next and also have two Criterion Blu Ray releases in the post; Solaris and Wings of Desire.

On the LD front I've had the Criterion release of Pulp Fiction for about a month now and still haven't watched it so that will probably be on the books soon too.

Just fired up Independence Day (ID4-THX-AC3-Special Edition/Uncut 1998 release)) with a Pioneer RF receiver fully engaged. Smoking Dolby Surround Sound! Sharp picture quality. This is what it's all about man.

Just watched Point Break (HK Widescreen LD) and currently watching The Replacement Killers (DK P&S LD) which is a stinker of a film...

Next up will be Turbulance (which is apparently awful, too!) or The Fugitive.

My latest LD watch was Walerian Borowczyk's La Bête just couple of days ago, it was bit of a b**ch to sit thru as audio track is mix of english and french dialogue but luckily I had seen this one before with complete english subs so I could focus completely on saucy (although fogged) bits ;)

Just watched Pulp Fiction for the first time; I wasn't overly impressed but then I've never been a fan of Tarantino or anthology films so it was to be expected. I got the Criterion release in with a haul of other discs I wanted, I think it'll probably end up on ebay soon.

Over the past few months or so my girlfriend and I have taken to watching through a TV series, one episode a night until we've seen it all.

So far we've gone through:
Spaced
The Prisoner
Twin Peaks
Blake's 7

Currently we're halfway through series 4 of Northern Exposure. Not sure what we'll watch once we hit the end of that as the boxset we have only contains series 1-4. We'll pick up the last two series at some point but we might take a break and watch something else in between.

Other possible shows that we might watch are I, Claudius and perhaps the two Dune Miniseries.

Just finished off Menace II Society Criterion. First time watch for me. Was awesome! The first scene really makes you sit up and pay attention.
Also, got through most of Lawrence of Arabia last night. More movies should start with an overture. Was very enjoyable.

That makes me smile. Whenever my 4 year old gets a chance to watch a movie in the main room where I have the laserdisc set up - "Aladdin!"

It's the only kids LD I have at the moment and I should really try to get some more so I can pass down the love of LD to the next gen. She is always so excited when I open up that gatefold and she has to look at all the characters.

The last LD I watched was The Shawshank Redemption. I scored a copy with very minimal rot, I have a second copy that is just unwatchable. Image was great, but what stood out the most was the score. It was magnificent, so richly detailed. It made me even more interested in acquiring a copy of American Beauty on LD which also has a score by Thomas Newman.

Hi mlcsmith,

That's a great idea you have of passing on the love of LD to a new generation, the members of which weren't among us to appreciate it the first time around! Keep the dream alive through the "munchkins" in your life! Unfortunately, I don't have any kids to pass the hobby along to.

One of the most recent discs I watched the other night was the Hong Kong release of "The Shadow Men". It's a very obscure alien abduction film with Eric Roberts, Sherilyn Fenn, and the venerable Dean Stockwell in a nice performance as a wild-eyed conspiracy theorist. Sherilyn Fenn's name was even prominently misspelled on the jacket! It was certainly no Academy Award winner, but it was fairly entertaining in a mindless sort of way. I think it came out shortly after "Men in Black", and it was obviously strongly inspired by this popular film. The title characters, sinister government agents who turn out to be hybrid aliens, are MIB clones, right down to the black suits, hats, and sunglasses! I was fortunate enough to score a copy of this rare HK only release with a near-mint disc and jacket. I thought I did pretty well, considering that I'll probably never see another copy of it!

My LD player broke but I got some VHS's I watched.
Police Story
Project A
My Lucky Stars
Morons from Outer Space
(yes, I know three of them are Jackie Chan films)
Good thing is I only paid $10 postage for all of these. That seems like a bargain as my last postage of 12 LD's from the US was $150!
