I still don't understand why they go with a 1.85:1 projection for these re-releases, when the original is in 1.66:1 (like the Laserdisc.) You lose quite a bit of the picture off the top and bottom! Plus, still can't get over how happy with the reds the color retouchers got. Man, it makes your eyes bleed with the BRIGHT ASSED REDS they used for some things! Especially the inside of the Beast's cape. Why they would go for a brighter hue than the burgundy exterior is beyond me!

Over the past few days I watched: DelicatessenEscape from L.A.The Ghost and the DarknessWasn't crazy about Delicatessen, I think it is a little over rated. Too much style and not enough story. As much as I get why other people may love Escape From New York, I only thought it was ok, but man oh man was I not crazy at all about Escape From L.A. I can't really hold the bad CG effects against it, but the combination of those and just the over the top dumb aspects of the story left me cold. Interesting, if not predictable, ending however. The Ghost and the Darkness wasn't too bad. I'm not crazy about it, I feel it dragged in places, but at the end of the day I'm glad I've seen it now. I also tried to watch Sister Sister , but my copy was riddled with rot on both sides. Red and blue specks everywhere.

I watched The Rock this morning. Great looking and sounding disc. I hadn't ever watched it all the way through before, and I really enjoyed it for what it is. As I type I am watching the AC-3 version of The Hunt for Red October, another great looking and sounding disc. I haven't seen this one before, but I am liking it thus far. *Edit* While I was watching the film I could have sworn that the ratio was less than 2.35:1, and after checking on IMDB, it turns out there was a 70mm blow up of the film that was closer to 2.20:1. I guess it makes sense that they would have mastered the AC-3 version from the 70mm version because it would have had a 6 track soundtrack, right? I don't have the original Letterbox disc, does anyone else out there have both it and the AC-3 disc to compare ratios?

I like the Dolby film mix on the film. It had cool Dolby SR sound when I was with UCI. I only have the region 2 DVD 6track Dolby digital with stereo surrounds the film was also released in 70mm 6track Dolby with split surrounds. I'm sure I read somewhere that Dolby was doing Dolby SR-D tests with the film?

Moving components around and messing with the HTPC so the LD player is not hooked up right now (just the PS3) but I picked up "The Thing" (prequel) on BD. If you liked the 1982 film then go buy this BD!!! I dont want to give anything away but the film is so good that if you remove the ending credits from the prequel and the opening credits from the 1982 film it would be one contiguous film! Be sure to check out the supplemental material; just trust me on this!

Yesterday I watched Lost World, The: Jurassic Park (1997) [43310] for the first time since I was 11 when I was lucky enough to get into a press screening about a month before general release in the UK. I think the company my Dad was working for at the time was partly sponsoring the films release, I can't remember exactly but I do remember making all my friends jealous ha ha. Of course at that age I was just impressed by dinosaurs, watching it again as an adult I'm not sure what to make of it compared to the original. It's not a bad film but it's much darker and I was surprised to find that the effects haven't held up anywhere near as well as the first film. Still, a nice addition to the collection.

Everyone I know was VERY skeptical but now this is a must have film. GREAT pains were taken to make it match the '82 Carpenter film. Again I dont want to give anything away to anyone who has not seen it yet but now I can't watch the '82 Thing without watching this first; like I said it is now just one long film...

I'm with that film for most of it, especially because I really like Goldblum. But when the kid starts doing gymnastics in the shed with conveniently placed poles, I just cringe.
