John Carpenter's They Live on DVD. First time I've seen it is today. Don't know how this one slipped by me over the years but I was impressed, it was a really good movie.

That is a cool film for the late 80's and I wonder myself at times when going to the supermarket if everyone is an ALIEN. I need the special glasses.

Watched Spawn a few days ago. Flawless (rot free) and shiny disc with DTS soundtrack, terrible movie though!

I've been watching New Wave Hits Of The 80's and Madonna: The Immaculate Collection. Both look and sound wonderful on the Runco LJR-II.

First LD I've seen in awhile:

Black Dog (1998) [LD 83662-WS]

Some really nice crash scenes in this flick.

Picked up a ton of classical music and opera discs yesterday.

We really enjoyed watching this last night.

Solar Crisis - WS US pressing. I think it's 1.78:1 but data base shows 1.66:1. It might even be 1.85:1, I didn't check for black bars for top and bottom(can't tell because of Pioneer plasmas inky blacks) but there definitely wasn't any black bar on sides.

Split Second (1992) [LD 90804]
"We're going to need bigger guns!"

Just opened my brand new copy of Split Second last night and viewed/transferred this on the HD PVR. This one is hard to find on DVD or laserdisc. Sellers have the DVD copies listed from 80-300 on eBay for this title. I think I paid 20 for my LD copy. I remember first watching this mid 90's on VHS.

Getting a little culture

Horowitz: Horowitz in Moscow (1986) [PA-87-179]

Part of a large classical/opera/ballet lot I just picked up. This is a great concert. Sometimes delicate and sometimes very dramatic. Beautiful sound, good image. Lots of close ups of his hands so you can see his unbelievable technique.

I spun Leviathan (1989) [ML101707] last night. Pretty bad movie with very hammy acting, bad characters and dumb looking creature. It is a 1990 release with no features not to mention that it has no chapter stops. Image was soft and I would consider it fair. The Dolby Surround track is also fair. Some nice underwater vessel pressure creaking effects but nothing really to write home about.

The DVD isn't that impressive either. I think it got played last year, it's only DD 2.0. 3 underwater epics in one year so they can't all be great. The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six.

The DVD by MGM might not be that impressive in general terms but its far better looking then the Blu-Ray which is compressed to hell.

Last night's feature film included Hammer Horror, Vampires, Kung Fu. Three of my favorite genres in one film! Legend of 7 Golden Vampires/7 Brothers of Dracula (1974) [RGL9631]

Beautiful print, although I had to really turn down the saturation. Solid audio and the gorgeous Roan disc packaging. A completely satisfying movie with very good kung fu. David Chiang was kicking some serious undead butt.

Tried to recapture the improbable vampire magic today with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on blu which was very amusing and much better than I thought it would be.

Is that another bootleg copy as I have the legit R1 DVD and illegitimate fake region free with fake Dolby 5.1, that appeared to be recoded though, Dolby pro-logic II music mode.

The bluray captures looked dire looking.

"The Blood of Heroes" (also known as; Salute of the Jugger) on DVD.

Ever since The Hitcher and Blade Runner, Rutger Hauer has become one of my favorite actors.
