Watching the classic "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) on ITV2 and ITV2+1 recording it.

Heart-warming and often sad at times classic film.

The DOLBY STEREO 4.2.4 matrix mix sounds good with panned sound effects and often a few dialouge pans. Music score sounds wonderful by Thomas Newman.

EARTHQUAKE (1974) showing on Film4+1 why I'm bothering to record it? (stopped recoding due to the audio compression and scenes being cut).

I missed the opening start of the film and "THE BIG ONE" Well maybe THE SMALL ONE with Film4 audio compression. The LASERDSISC and R2 DVD makes Film4 seem like amateur night.

It is however in Stereo Matrix. No HD broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1.

What is left of the film I'm monitoring on Spectrum Lab and with a little more turning up the sub but what's the point its only summing up the level of LCR there isn't any LFE.1 to brag about here.

The word f@gs was cut with dodgy jump to "dressing up in jewels"

Image

When Jodie shoots the locals it was trimmed down by few frames? Wasn't this film a "A" rating when it opened on 28th November 1974 (UK).

Image

The EARTHQUAKE scenes are heavily audio compressed so no real point turning it up and the sub is hopeless for it. Yeah nice one Film4. Stop using audio compression!

During the scene with drains filling up with water the roar/rumbling was holding at about -34db on SDDS.

I still get goosebumps chills at Charlton Heston, look of horror.

Film4+1 EARTHQUAKE vs LASERDISC EARTHQUAKE

Image

Dynamics look a bit weak compressed. Even between the short pause in the sound effects and music playing before it fades to black and end credits there's a noticeable rising hissy effect of the compression.

Image

Dynamics look a bit stronger uncompressed.

Image

Interestingly there is slight more deepness during the brief mild aftershock scene when survivors are being pulled though the hole in the tunnels.

So wonder what is going on here with the Film4+1 what version did they use despite the noticeable audio compression

Image

The Aftershock he appears to be a little less on the Laserdisc even thou its pure PCM uncompressed.

Scope framing

Image

Film4+1 is a bit cropped scope 2.35:1

Image

Laserdisc is bit more fuller on the scope

Image

Jack Hammer has a bit more range on the LASERDISC

Image

Jack Hammer seemed compress-inly weak on the low end on Film4+1.

RANSOM (1996) now playing in Dolby Stereo Digital AC-3, Lucafilm Ltd THX Sound System.

Image

A tense thriller starring Mel Gibson, Gary Sinise, Rene Russo, Lili Taylor, Delroy Lindo and Liev Schreiber.
Tom Mullen son is kidnapped by some roughness crooks who want $2 million.

Transfer has little dotty edginess on horizontal but otherwise its not distracting me that much. Brick walls flickery effect that could have been dealt with. Overall picture is Laserdisc fine colours are not messed up looks good in daylight and night time scenes. Okay at side 2 chapter 13, 18.23 a bit tough to get a picture of the helicopter with the floodlight and the hint of blue around the foreground casts some green around the white on the floodlight.

Film starts off softly with score, dialouge and effects but soon picks up with dynamics with some punchy bass and LFE.1.

TalkTalk cable film movie view early morning hours of today THE HEAT (2013) :wtf: It was like watching a Tampax advertisement for 2 hours. £3.50 wasted on this crap.

Its not worth buying on bluray and its certainly not worth renting or even shoplifting the DVD.

The only thing good about the film was just after the end credits started after a few seconds it cuts back to the film again? :wtf:

DIE HARD 2 on E4 and E4+1 last night Christmas Eve uncut. Last time I saw it on TV was ITV and all the swearing was dubbed over with silly words. I still have the film on region 2 DVD but would like to get the THX Laserdisc Dolby AC-3 pressing at sometime?

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on BBC three HD in Six-Track Dolby Stereo Digital (with dialouge panning). Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System.

Oh this is my Christmas dinner at 8:30pm been sleeping most of the day.

Cool with effects and Foley panning to on screen positions within the scope frame 2.35:1

The heart-ripping scene still cut from UK showing. Least I have it on Laserdisc that looks mildly grim.

Several times the there was drop-out on the sound.

Now Dolby Stereo pro-logic Norm +2db just typical.

Speeded up end credits and chopped up so the BBC can rush home for what is left of the Christmas dinner they are so unprofessional.

Whatever you do NOT get the Blu-Ray. They completely screwed up the colours and contrast for the Blu-Ray and now the film looks so flat and ugly. Instead of the bright blue cool hues, we have everything dreaded in warm browns and oranges. It looks wrong and lifeless. Sure theres more detail, but the increase in resolution comes no where close to justifying what they did. This cap shows it best.

That's why I play the region 2 DVD over the bluray I bought it was disgusting looking with colour. The scope was slight cropped off. A blind man did a better job of the DVD and I'd take the risk with THX Laserdisc as well.

The sound is fine on all of them.

Got both playing on different players at the moment.

Bear in mind these are captures off the CRT and the CRT is slightly overscanned but its a bit more fuller on the video projector.

I like the sound of the magazines being switched from red live bullets to blue blank bullets, sounds similar to the 35mm Dolby Stereo SR in the cinema, nice wide with individual click, click, clicks.

Words can't describe how f***ed up that looks.

Die Hard 2 is the worst colour treatment I've seen on Blu-Ray. The DVD upscaled or even that THX LD are far better options.

The Blu-Ray was the first viewing I ever had of Die Hard 2 and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Having seen the DVD version my prospective on the movie has completely changed, I know love it. Its amazing what colours and style can do. All the style was sucked out of the Blu-Ray and I just couldn't get into it the first time around..

I don't know what possess the studios to wreck their own products?

If its de-graining and adding in DNR with touch of EE and someone who thinks he's the new Pablo Picasson of video colourizing.

Its sad to see films end up getting junk treatment. Fox knows. Plus the bad colour transfer I think used for the SE DVD box set released some years back which I have and I didn't even like it, myself.

The only part that was good about it all was the audio commentary the trailers and the extras and that's about it.

The BDs seem to be based off of the masters used for the SE DVDs, which themselves were based off of the original DVDs which many complained were too dark etc. So the studio brightened them up and they looked a bit more video-ey. BTW the original DVD non-anamorphic issues should be direct ports of the THX LDs.
