The War - LD
Very underrated movie with Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood.

Since I missed the annual showing of it on Broadcast TV this year (it was moved to Saturday rather than Sunday) . . . Never saw it before with the intro by Cecil B. DeMille.

Haven't popped in a Laserdisc in awhile, but I watched No Country for Old Men, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, Les Miserables, Super 8, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind on Blu Ray this week. I've watched a ton of other stuff, but I can't remember it all, I've been off of school this week, so I've had a lot of free time. I'm going to see a 35mm print of Ben Hur tonight at a local art house though, I'm super stoked!

elahrairrah wrote: I was thinking about getting that release as well (has an AC-3 remix in addition, right?), but I wanted the extras that came with the box set. Yes, AC-3. Sometimes it pops up on ebay and if the seller does not have a good knowledge of laserdiscs, you can get it cheap. In a case like that it doesn't get promoted in the ad as AC3 or "remastered". You just have to look closely at the jacket, it is different than another similar jacket that came out before the box set you have. You can rarely beat the later issue LDs.

remington wrote: There's also a last issue 1998 remastered widescreen release of The Ten Commandments that has the Demille intro. It's a little harder to find, but for me it was worth it. The original 1982 LaserDisc release also has the DeMille intro, just in the wrong order - instead of starting with the entrance music, then the DeMille intro and opening credits as the film should, it starts with DeMille intro, then entrance music and opening credits, which makes no sense. On the original LaserDisc the entrance music is in mono then the film switches to full stereo when the credits start. Amazingly, the original disc is Dolby Surround encoded and was done so especially for disc. For the time it was a beautiful release and made a few "Best Discs Of The Year" lists.

The Evil Dead Herald Videogram Japanese edition - http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/35104/SF0 ... %281981%29The best way to watch this film to this day period! A very dark image with scratches, smudges, reel change cue dots, cigaret burns and a awesome cool blue filter that overall makes the film so much creepier then ever before. The special effects also look better on this Laserdisc compared to newer Laserdiscs, DVDs and Blu-Rays because of the very low black levels... just a pleasure to watch..

At Maximum Volume. 2001: A Space Odyssey: Special Edition #60 (1968) (Uncut) [CC1160L]This portion of your post fascinates me. Can you elaborate a bit? 1) How many tracks are on the DVD, HDDVD, Blu? 2) Does the 70mm refer to the film size? vs 35mm? I assume large physical film size means more room for audio? 3) Soundtrack is in Stereo, so Prologic turns it into 4 channel surround right? No discrete mixing of the soundtrack? 4) What is wrong with the color timing on the other versions of the disc? How can you find this out? Time to look more closely at my LDs! Thanks.

Recent watch list (bolded titles are blu-ray): Cannonball Run, The (1981) [VL6001]- I had not seen this in 20 years. I should have waited another 20. Very cheesy movie. Flight-quite a good Denzel Washington movie. I recommend a viewing. Crocodile Dundee (1986) [LV 32029]- Now this is a great movie. Just a total 80's classic. If you've never seen this, go out and get it. Thor- A rewatch, but always one that is fun to turn up the volume and have that sub shake the room. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows- Another good one for demoing that subwoofer. End of Watch- Ok, but I hate "shaky cam". I was about to turn it off half way through just because I hate when they shake the camera so vigoursly for no good reason. Star Trek VIII: First Contact (1996) [LV332433-WS]- Probably the best Star Trek movie with the TNG cast. If you like Scifi, makes a good watch. Bad Girls (1994) (Uncut) [8627-85]- Pretty terrible. I watched this as my fiancee likes Drew Barrymore. Trouble with the Curve- So so movie with Clint Eastwood. Out for Justice (1991) [12219]- Another cheezy but fun Steven Seagal movie. It's so bad that it's good. Arbitrage- Actually pretty good movie with Richard Gere. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) [ID6481OR]- Funny movie with Steve Martin at his all time best. Michael Caine also does a good job. Superman: The Movie (1978) [1013 LV]- Classic Richard Donner movie. Skyfall- If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. Very entertaining. I also liked how they payed homage to the some of the earlier bond movies. Superman 2 (1980) [11120LV]- Ok but not as good as the first. The Sessions- Actually quite funny. The main actor (I don't know his name) did a really good job. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows- repeat viewing for testing out the new Hsu VTF-15H subwoofer. Superman III (1983) [12032]- it's pretty much a slow downhill. Richard Pryor did this one for a big paycheck but doesn't deliver. Sinbad Collection, The: 7th Voyage/Golden Voyage/Eye of Tiger [09916]- Ray Harryhausen shows off his stop motion abilities in this very nice boxed set trilogy. The 7th Voyage was pretty good, and a slow downhill from there. Zero Dark Thirty- The "true story" of how they caught Bin Laden. Not bad. Argo- Very entertaining movie. Definitely recommend. The Man with the Iron Fists- I can't believe Russel Crowe was in this movie. Absolutely horrible. Stargate (1994) [LD60190-WS]- Very good movie. And this disc has a nice 5.1 AC3 soundtrack. Outland (1981) [12224]- Classic early 80's scifi "space suspense" movie with Sean Connery. Red Dawn (2012)- Ok at best, I think the 80's version was significantly better. Only the Lonely (1991) [1877-85]- Fun romantic comedy with John Candy. Killing Them Softly- So-so with Brad Pitt. Ok rental, not a buy. Hoosiers (1986) [ID6085VE]- Classic Gene Hackman movie. Pick this up if you have never seen it before. Beetlejuice (1988) [11785]- Classic Tim Burton movie. Definite watch. Hitchcock-Very good film, I would recommend a watch. Flashdance (1983) [LV1454]- Wonderful 80's classic, I can't believe people actually dressed like that! This was the first time I actually saw the "uncensored" (non-broadcast) version.
