Abyss, The: Special Edition (1989) (Uncut) [1988-85] "Keep your pantyhose on!" Viewed this last night. It's been years since last viewed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Picture: 7.5 Pleasantly surprised by this LD, compared to the DVD it holds up well. Lots of greens blues and darker tones saturated most of the playing time so I didn't expect a very sharp or detailed image yet it still projected very well, noise was noticeable up close but not distracting. I'd rate it near DVD quality at 8 feet back from my seating position or slightly above average on PQ for LD. Sound: 7.5 Audio was Dolby Stereo Surround, very active from start to finish, I selected Dolby + MV + THX on the Pioneer VSX 53 and cranked the DB up generously as normally required on non digital sources. The effects were quite detailed and crisp, not nearly as discrete as a 5.1 source would be but since my only DVD copy is also 2.0 Dolby I didn't see any advantage to view it and went with the Special Edition LD despite the numerous side changes. Story 8 One of James Cameron's best films in my opinion, it's a shame this one hasn't gone Blu yet, I welcome a new transfer with an HD audio track. Wow Factor 7.5 Front and back covers aren't especially art, that I could say. They look about average like Aliens. It's a box, 3 disc. The best feature here is the insert which is really outstanding. I would probably only rate this one a 6.5 or 7 without it. So make sure it's included before you buy. The box, 3 discs and inserts feels like you're getting a bargain and collectors set. Overall 7.5 I think I may check out the AC3 Extended Edition, which I believe is the same cut as this SE. I would probably rate it around an 8 or 8.5 overall depending on the audio. Unless the Blu ray arrives shortly, which it could later this year. Edit: added Wow Factor results. |

I just ordered the Extended Edition AC3 version, it just lacks the extra disc that's in the Box set SE. I definitely recommend the box though because it has the large info insert which is really nice and you'll never get anything like that on DVD or Blu ray. Plus the bonus features, all which are probably easier to watch on the DVD but it's still a cool set. I look forward to receiving the AC3 version and compare the audio. |

The LaserDisc's supplements are easier to navigate than on the DVD - the AC-3 mix is incredible and still a "reference" soundtrack. |

just watched Die Hard (1988) [8905-85] audio seems different than what is listed for this. analog 1L does sound like mono, 2R is AC-3 static since i do not own a decoder. digital 1L seems like something different than 2R, 2R seems like mono and when both are on it seems you get some extra sound effects on the right channel with my 2 channel setup. anyway here are some pictures from the projector plug my LD CLD-D503 directly into the projector S-Video and it's on an 76 inch screen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

M: "Take the bloody shot"! Eve: "Agent down". "SKYFALL" (2012) now playing in dtshdma 5.1 with ES-matrix JBL ("James Bond Loudness" Sound system) / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System The film has personal plot with an ex MI-5 agent who is out for revenge. Can, James Bond 007, yet again save the day? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Oscar nominated best sound effects and sound mix may possibly be awarded for one of the sound awards its going to be tough call on February Sunday 24th 2013? There is a Bond spoiler dilaouge human pan from stage left to centre but not enough human dialouge panning its mostly centred and I wish the director or mixers had used dialouge panning all the way as I don't find it distracting I find it, expends and opens up for realism. The sound effects where cracking fun to listen to where I found myself on a few occasions participating reacting to. So it might take a sound effects editing Oscar? Will have to wait and see what Oscar academy likes listening to last year? If I had say I'd give it Best Sound and Best Sound effects editing. Picture quality is clear and colourful in the SCOPE 2.35:1. Film Editing by Stuart Baird The editing was nicely done, Well he's better at editing that sending STAR TREK Nemesis (2002) off into endless wormhole in space. Thomas Newman score was thrilling to start the film off though a quick street car case then on motorbike and ending on train, till the Adele "Shyfall" theme came in all-around. This wasn't quiet as loud as Casino Royale (2006) that also won BAFTA best sound and was damn loud as well! This one was a bit milder and the loudest moments was saved till near the end as they usually do. |

Watched Perfect Blue last night off of a 720p Blu Ray rip with subs. Wasn't a great transfer, lots of little specks of print damage and gate weave issues. |

League of Their Own, A (Yellow Cover) (1992) [51226] Viewed this one last night. Years and years since last seen. ![]() ![]() ![]() "There's no crying in baseball!" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Video 6.5 Not the best transfer, but then again, neither is the first DVD pressing. The final screenshot is from the '97 DVD, I think the LD holds up well. Noise is a little high but colors still pop and minimal blurring. There is a 2004 DVD possibly the same transfer and of course a new Blu ray. Sound 6.5 Nothing really stood out, I used PLIIx to give it a Dolby Surround feel which filled the room enough. The DVD didn't fair any better with DD 2.0, the 2004 has DD 4.0 which might give more discreteness. This just may be one of those films that doesn't really matter with separate channel mapping, I feel even with the 5.1 DTS HD MA on the new Blu ray, I would still be board. It wasn't like I heard baseballs whizzing over my shoulder 2 inches from my ear. I'd be real surprised it's any different on the Blu ray. Story 7.5 I liked it, it's an original baseball story with a well ensemble cast. John Lovitz small roll but funny, Tom Hanks, a different roll than his usual outing, Geena Davis was good as well. Madonna's roll doesn't really stand out, until she's seen in her bra. Wow Factor 7.0 The cover has nice color, glancing at the CLV I prefer the yellow, the rear cover is detailed and provides sufficient info. This one will have no trouble overshadowing the DVDs and even Blu ray release. No inserts or gatefold. Overall 7.0 Unless you're going to step up and buy the Blu ray, I'd recommend this CAV Edition LD. The screenshots of the Blu ray look pretty convincing though. |

elahrairrah good review as the film has they all have Clichés but it's something I can find myself watching again and again for a week but only the theatrical release I'm not keen on the extended cut even thou it fleshes out a bit more depth to the story I would have liked it if it had the cinema 85 Dolby mix, the opening titles, well takes a lot getting used to. I like it with Michael Kamen adding in deep tense scary chill when Calsen moves in front of one space vampires in the chamber, but the score for the extended version makes it seem calmer and less scary. |

what i need is a ac-3 demodulator. i will be replacing my avr within 3 months. i was gonna pick the apd-1, but i don't want a fire from an incorrect voltage. the one i'm looking at--vsx 56txi, does not have an ac-3 output. but the 49 and 59 does, more money. i'd be better off with the vsx 56.. now playing at cineplex barnes: howard the duck, with alternate ending in 4:3:5 sound |
