Recent watch list (bolded titles are blu-ray): The Big Year - Fun comedy. It's been awhile since I saw Steve Martin in a "good" movie. Good rental. Marked for Death (1990) [1865-80]- Cheesy 80's Steven Segal movie. My Blue Heaven (1990) [12003]- I was inspired to watch this after watching Steve Martin in "The Big Year." This is a classic, definitely worth a viewing. To Rome with Love - Another Woody Allen european drama. This didn't strike a cord with me for some reason. Very similar to "Midnight in Paris", except this was not as good. I do recommend watching "Midnight in Paris" however. Seven Psychopaths - Funny morbid comedy with some big name actors. Definitely worth a rental. Mr. Baseball (1992) [41461]- My fiancee and I like Tom Selleck movies, so we spun this up in the player. Very fun and entertaining. The Cold Light of Day - Was not expecting too much from this one. Kind of shallow murder/action movie. Henry Cavill is becoming a big name actor, first Immortals (which I really liked), and then the new superman reboot coming this year. The Avengers - Got the Blu-ray as a present this month so we had another viewing. AAA action sci-fi movie. Very good sound. I bought a new subwoofer this week (Hsu Research VTF-15H) which should arrive next Monday, I think I will have to revisit this to compare as there are a lot of explosions and low end sounds. Maltese Falcon, The (1941) [ML101546]- I had actually never seen this classic. I'm glad I saw it on laserdisc as it aids in that nostalgic feel. Good movie. Commando (1985) [1484-80]- Classic definition of 80's action movie... just all around fun with great lines like "I'll be back." |

Rocketeer, The (1991) [1239 AS] Last night showing, not seen since its original release. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "You steer, I'll push." ![]() ![]() Jennifer Connelly: always a pleasure to see here in a movie ![]() ![]() An evil James Bond, I never liked him anyway: ![]() Paul Sorvino: stereotype mob boss: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Billy Campbell, I remember he was in an episode of Next Gen and had a starring role in the 4400: kind of reminds me of Brandon Frasier ![]() Video: 7.0 I played around with color and sharpness while viewing, never could seem to get this one quite right. Ended up returning to my usual user 1 settings for Laserdisc. Color seemed a little on the yellow side and faded, yet at times the image has a pleasant softness to it, very natural. The Blu ray screen shots look very appealing so I'll probably add this one to my list of BD's to get. Audio: 7.5 No complaints, the score was very nice, lots of deep base and the crackle of the rocket every 15 minutes keeps you entertained. Sit back, give it ample volume, maybe throw it into simulated surround and enjoy. Story: 7.0 I really wanted to enjoy this one more and I remember having fun with it when I was younger, it just seemed a little dry this time around. I may wait a year then pick up the Blu ray and give it another go. Wow Factor: 7.0 It doesn't take your breath away, still its going to be slightly more impressive than its DVD or BD counterparts because of its larger format. Overall: 7.0 If you don't already have this LD I'd probably just go for the Blu ray and save this LD for the die hard fans. I'll leave this one with a question: How did the Rocketeer not burn all his butt hairs off? |

Closeup of the CLV: I've noticed Disney liked to release both a CLV and CAV editions quite a bit. Not that they're the only studio to do so.

I'm dying of laughter right now from you guys. But in the meantime, I popped in the Blu Ray of First Blood. Decent transfer, some muted detail seemed to be evident, but it didn't really bother me. What did was the rampant gate weave anytime the camera stopped moving. Oh well. Watching Man on Fire as we speak. Love me some Denzel Washington, as well as Tony Scott. It's a shame he passed away. |

Excalibur (1981) [22030] and Excalibur (1981) [111519] I started off playing the Laserdisc and switched to the HD DVD. A Blu ray was finally released in 2011 which I don't have. I may purchase the Blu ray and see if the Mpeg 4 is any better. Front cover has that majestic fantasy look. Makes nice art. I wouldn't be ashamed to frame this one year around. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The 1.85 frame doesn't quite fill the NTSC projection. I can only zoom 16 levels on this LG so it won't fill the screen with this LD. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And now the HD DVD: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The grain is really heavy, even distracting in some darker, slower scenes. ![]() Closeup of grain: ![]() Is Picard worthy of Excalibur? ![]() No, but looks like he'll need a new pair of shorts! ![]() Other daylight scenes and fast movement the grain is hardly noticeable. ![]() ![]() ![]() LD/HD DVD Video: 7.0/8.0 Laserdisc hides the grain better but of course sharpness, clarity and color all take a hit. The HD DVD shines well with color and detail. Some of the darker scenes the grain is really prominent which I don't prefer. The colors really pop, but be careful with brightness, I lowered mine down from normal HD DVD settings, it appeared too washed at higher level. The Blu ray was finally released in 2011 with an MPEG 4 encode, I may actually purchase it and see if the new transfer is any better. Overall, I was really pleased with both, although I'm not sure why the LD didn't fill the whole frame with 1.85, but slightly inset. If you don't have infinite scaling capabilities, it will be a problem filling your screen. Perhaps this would be a good one for the projector. Sound: 6.5/7.5 Not impressive. Original mix was mono, so I guess we should be happy with a Dolby Surround on the LD (an AC3 version is also available on LD) and a 5.1 DD+ on the HD DVD. The Blu ray has 5.1 DTS HD MA, according to the Blu ray review it didn't get high marks either. The score is fairly scarce, Carmina Burana is sourced several times, at least once it is blended well and amplified. Frequency range is rather flat and centered front channel, despite the 5.1. Story 7.5 Overall, I enjoy this movie, at times it's like watching Holly Grail and I expect to see coconuts clattering together instead of horses. The beginning scene when Luther is attacking the castle I imagined the Lord sneering down and uttering "I fart in your general direction!" I'm thinking 20 or 30 mins cut from this movie would work better. Wow Factor 7.5 It's a nice cover, the HD DVD cover used the AC3 LD version, but I think this Dolby Surround version is the best. Overall 7.0/7.5 They may have reached the limits of a quality transfer on this one, only the 2011 Blu ray will tell. Video and audio aren't the best and considering the low budget for an epic film such as this, it's amazing it looks this good. I wouldn't normally buy a Blu ray if I already have the HD DVD, which I have many now, but I may make an exception for Excalibur. The HD DVD is still very nice and if you're collecting HD DVD's I don't think you'll be disappointed. Considering the 5.1 DD+ isn't that impressive I would say the Dolby Surround version of the LD would be sufficient if you have to have this one on Laserdisc. |

tomtastic cool shots of Excalibur from Laserdisc to HD-DVD I didn't think a HD-DVD existed? I wonder if they made a mess of the bluray with DNR? |

with Excalibur, i have the AC-3 and the regular, i think the AC-3 is slightly clearer but by a little. also i think most of the film was shot to be a little grainy or foggy and not super clear, to give that fantasy/dream look. one of my top films !!!! |

A couple of other notes on Excalibur that I read, the director switched from stereo to mono mix because he wasn't satisfied with the Dolby balance. They went with 1.85 instead of 2.35 to make the special effects easier. Bryan Singer was set to direct a remake but it's been shelved. |
