Patrick Stewart would be interesting, since he had a role in Excalibur and he can play anything.

What are your sharpness levels on for the HD-DVD tomtastic? Because those grainier shots look speciously like video noise has been thrown into to the mix which is generally caused by the sharpness setting being too high on the display itself. Although I could be wrong since I have no idea how the film was shot or what the artistic purposes were.

But anyway, older formats like DVD and Laserdisc can't really show grain properly due to the SD low resolution compared to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

No, I think it's just the low light they used in the scene, the grain doesn't show up that bad most of the movie, those shots in particular were the worst in the movie, but considering the small 11 million budget I shouldn't complain that much. Right, the grain is too small for DVD or LD to resolve. The LD is a softer image but less color and detail. I was reading about this film the original photographer had shot entire battle scene and ended up walking out because the entire scene was too dark and didn't show up on the film.

I'll have to take some new shots, I'll do the same image side by side and compare the LD to HD DVD with the heavy grain scenes, also double checking sharpness and trumotion setting.

Watched Goldeneye last night on Laserdisc. Great image quality for the most part especially in our door exteriors. These screenshots are not near as good as I hoped, looks much better in person, even hitting pause sucks the quality out of the picture, but anyway here they are:

I need to give Dune a try again. I tried watching it around '97 but I shut it off, I was so board with it at the time and it just seemed awful compared to similar movies of the time. I'd give it a try again just because Patrick Stewart is in it.

Bored I know exactly what you mean. I only like a few scenes from the film. Those sub bass thumpers to call the SandWorms  (I got get a few of those) and near to end when the dramatic music cuts in and it starts raining and then the end credits.

Spun this Island, The [Z1 Y14110] last night. Image and audio were kicking. Ran the cat out the room, lol. Movie was so-so. The premise was pretty bad, acting so so but at least the action scenes were good.

Goldeneye: Special Edition (1995) [ML105987]

I was going to watch "GOLDENEYE" (1995) dts THX Laserdisc this morning but have been around my dad's for the day for a Sunday meal, so maybe tomorrow I'll give it another yet spin for the 50 or maybe time since I've had the Laserdisc late 90's.

Update with Excalibur:

I had to run this one thru capture, I can't get a clean photo of screen with it. I'll do the same for the HD DVD, but I must rip the HD DVD first. This is from the LD of course with deinterlacing:
LD:

HD DVD:

The image is so dark and I have no idea if this was director intent, but it appears the brightness was increased significantly for the HD DVD.

M: "Good, because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War, whose boyish charms, though wasted on me, obviously appealed to that young woman I sent out to evaluate you".

Now playing. "GOLDENEYE" (1995) dts THX Laserdisc / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL James Bond Loundess system.

Picture 8 / has a little odd, now and then crosstalk that pops up. Brightness contrast levels are nice as to is the tone of colour.

Sound 10 / its a creatively thought-out 6 channel mix done at Pinewood recoding studios. Some dialouge pans are heard across the stage left or right and on the surrounds but its mostly positioned to centre front. LFE.1 rumbles thumbs kicks slams drops down reasonable low as does the lows across the rest of the full-range channels.

Sound effects editing and mixing is nicely timed while it follows the forward images side angles and off-screen.

Sound effects and mixing with chapter 26 has an jet airliner panning from stage left to right side surround arrays. Pan starts at 55m.17s as it gets near and mildly loud but distant above it starts to fade up soft on the right surround arrays at 55m.21s and finally fades away into the right surround at 55m.34

Interesting how its mixed it does make me think the sound is equally between stage left and right surround its above.

I was thinking some years ago about placing extra matrix decoders between the left front and right surround / right front and left surround so when switched on for Pro-Logic it should place the sound in the middle or above on some extra ceiling surrounds.

It would be rather complicated to make it work as some parts of the mix would need to have equal phase frequency response as the logic circuity is looking for in-phase that would when the moment comes position the sound in new location and might not work with every film.

I call the idea "crossover-surround" but in the 7 or so years I haven't tried it out. The film mix as it is, is nicely mixed.

Chapter 32 though to 34 the escape and the tank rolling down St. Petersburg sound panning and voice panning creates a believability without necessarily wrecking the home THX cinema with low end rolling all-around.

Looks like EE I'll have to take short Laserdisc to DVD-RW for a direct screen capture.

I softened down the sharpness on the Sony CRT

Nice caps and review laserbrite. How does the DTS mix compare against the Dolby ac3 version?

I don't think I've owned the Dolby AC-3 version so I can't comment on it.

Just finished watching The Keep and man, I can understand why Michael Mann and the author of the book denounced that movie. It started off neat enough, but it lost my interest by the end.
