"THE THING" (2011) now playing in dtshdma Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System for the second time in row tonight and the 6th time now I've seen it and the sound gets better all the time with strange creepy things panning everywhere. 2nd showing of THE THING tonight made a few trims on the LF LCR with HP filter and lowered the HF level down a bit to boast the low end bass-mid up for that chesty THING feeling. The stereo surrounds have a good airy feeling with hollowing wind blowing around and some vehicles panning off the LCR to surrounds or someone banging on the door on stage right that feels and sounds alarmingly realistic. Good usage of flame-throwers kinder like THE THING (1982) and ALIEN ALIENS and ALIEN RESUSCITATION. ALIEN 3, all they had to use was s**t, no rubbers and no ice-cream. LOL The little THINGS at 1:16:15 clicking and crawling around the surrounds as to give the sense they're clawing on wood is creepy. Makes me want to arm myself with a flame-thrower. lol Nice again to hear some human dialouge panning on stage left at 1:20:48 "Kate". I think more films should use dialouge panning a it keeps it even more real like those 70mm Todd-AO mixes of the grand days of cinema. I might give THE THING a 3rd showing and maybe a 4th later in the day at Fader 0.0db on the Sony D3000 as I've really gotten into THE THING (2011) since last year viewing it a few times. I think THE THING is bothering my Sooty with strange sounds everywhere? Creepy visual CGI and puppet effects with two faces blending together. WTF! Ending is chilling as if anyone knows of THE THING (1982) all doesn't end with happy ending. Not sure if Kate lives at the end as it doesn't show maybe she froze or managed to get out as it might take her a few days travel by snow mobile to the nearest base camp? The film didn't do well at the box office and was a low budget production and I can't figure why it didn't take in an easy $80 million or more gross to cover the $38 million it took to make and only scrapped in $16.9 million? I couldn't resist THE THING and now playing for 3rd time today at 07:12 hours. Turn the Sony SDDS fader up to -10.0db. Its a short running time at 1hour 43 mins. Nice lading of the helicopter at 0:10:15 as it appears to come down across the surrounds with a sense of height as well across the LCR at the same time.

TRAINING DAY (2001) HD-DVD Dolby Stereo Digital TrueHD EX Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System. The Dolby mix with Denzel Washington ice-cold chilling voice can almost be felt as corrupt narcotics office with his new rookie partner Ethan Hawke the film has action and chilling scenes. This film is so edgy I'm giving it a second play.

I watched Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines on HD DVD last night and Chicken Run on DVD. HD DVD must be your format of choice, as I know how partial you are to Dolby and their sound formats and HD DVD's use of Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD. I've got 6 coming in the mail, and they all have Dolby sound mixes.

Its got a rocking effects track that kicks with the gunshots even car sound effects. If you liked "Tears of the Sun" (2003) with its heavy deep end machine-gun firing you'll like "TRAINING DAY" its got some good use of dialouge panning (now and then) that rarely happens on most films today. I might get into a third showing as its nearly near the end.

Watched Heat (1995) [14192] with the wife. She surprised me by saying this was one of her favorites as she typically does not like violent movies. The movie is outstanding and it was nice to revisit again after seeing it in the theater. I found the disc to be ok. The audio was very uneven, and I had to crank it up to hear the dialog and then would get blown away by the gunshots and helicoptors. The image was a tad weak but decent enough.

Hope there would be Part IV if Spielberg still loved this franchise. i don't know, i think the movies are pretty much over and done, the tv series picked up where part 3 left off.

I own Back To The Future Part III on Blu-Ray and I thought it was an average transfer at best. I wonder how the Hi-Vision version stacks up agienst the Blu-Ray version. Would be very interesting to see!
