The Patriot (2000) DVD Dolby 5.1 Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System

Listening to some sound highlights from The Patriot. last such time was 5 or so years ago when I played the DVD last.

Chapter 7, has coolness stillness of the forest as (Mel Gibson)
Benjamin Martin hides behind a tree ready to strike back and with the the voices of the British troops being panned over LCR and often into the surrounds its easy to get my attention and should be practiced all the time in films.

100% dialouge panning even if the rest of the audience at least +80% I'm willing don't listen and wouldn't know the difference between mono and good mixed Dolby film.

Low end is satisfactory to rumble the seats.

Chapter 7, is my Dolby demo scene.

When the John Williams score kicks in with thumbing pulse as seen in the Spectrum Lab of LCR and LFE.1 shows where the film mix is going.

Sounds best with Dolby-EX switched in so it centres the phantom sounds within the split-surrounds has me, looking left/right of the surrounds and behind as some musket gunshots which have a heck of kick to them.

John Williams score kicks in with pulsing beating thumbing low end that drives the scene a bit faster.

"The Firm" (1993) Dolby Stereo / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System.

For a P/S edition which is the second time now I've seen a P/S. First time was on VHS rental around 1994.

Picture colour brightness looked great I was expecting worse but it was great for LD.

Dolby Stereo mix was fine with clear easy to understand dialouge though the whole running time. Sound effects was used to good effect when needed. Not heavy amount of surround panning forwards and backwards it was kept rather subtle soft.

No problems with each of the three CLV sides no crosstalk and certainly no rot.

Might go for the bluray next W/S.

No issues with the picture quality that looked good throughout the film.

The title asks, What have you been watching? Sometimes I watch BDs, some times HD DVDs, and tonight it was LD, Image. :P

Hey, you wouldn't know by any chance if that double feature has the mono soundtrack for the first film, would you? I've been searching for that for ages, but everything just has the fake stereo version or the 5.1 remix (save for the new BD which has lossy mono.)

Nice to see the original color timing on that SE DVD. Also, the original Dolby Stereo on the LD is among the best in the series.

Well those Ultimate Bond on DVD looked dreadfully treated with enough DNR to fill up the Merseyside Travel.

Bought Goldfinger and then for A & B I bought Octopussy and I didn't like the look of the Ultimate and decoded it wasn't worth the risk buying any-more. I have also shred away from the bluray editions.

The Spy Who Loved Me if you note the opening titles the SCOPE shrinks in size which is what I saw with Digital screening at the Empire Leicester Square a few years ago and it was the worst THX presentation I have ever seen and listened too. centre channel loss 60 mins into the film and I had to bring it to managements attention and nothing really was done about it. That cinema has done real high quality presentation since their original JBL THX sound system. The Digital show was just lazy 1/10 rating.

So I'm not touching the bluray editions I'm happy with SD thou I would prefer NTSC THX editions with slower normal running time. I look at the bluray editions most times I go in a HMV store but haven't touched them yet.

I have been watching some of the THX LD pressings so might go for of them at some time?

EVITA (1996) Dolby Digital AC-3 Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System

Picked up from the post office today as I missed the post yesterday. EVITA in wonderful 6-track Dolby Stereo Digital AC-3 Laserdsc

Picture transfer looks marvellous for the THX mastering pressing.

Dolby Stereo Digital is what the film is about as its a musical (Andrew Lloyd Webber) film by Alan Parker. Lyrics by Tim Rice starring (Madonna) as Eva Perón.

Jonathan Pryce, Antonio Banderas, Jimmy Nail.

Musical tone treble and bass has a nice rhythm feel from Oscar nominated Ken Weston (Anna Behlmer, Andy Nelson The X-Files Fight the Future).

Don't Cry for Me Argentina

[Eva:]
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done

You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you

I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun

So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to

[Chorus:]

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired

They are illusions
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me

Don't cry for me Argentina

[chorus]

Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you.
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

[Eva:]
There again I've more to do
Than simply get the message through
I haven't started
Let's get this show on the road
Let's make it obvious
Peron is off and rolling

[Chorus:]

[Eva's dressers:]
Eyes, hair, mouth, figure
Dress, voice, style, movement
Hands, magic, rings, glamour
Face, diamonds, excitement, image

[Eva:]
I came from the people, they need to adore me
So Christian Dior me from my head to my toes
I need to be dazzling, I want to be Rainbow High
They must have excitement, and so must I

[Eva's dressers:]
Eyes, hair, mouth, figure
Dress, voice, style, image

[Eva:]
I'm their product, it's vital you sell me
So Machiavell me, make an Argentine Rose
I need to be thrilling, I want to be Rainbow High
They need their escape, and so do I

[chorus]

[Eva:]
All my descamisados expect me to outshine the enemy
I won't disappoint them
I'm their savior, that's what they call me
So Lauren Bacall me, anything goes
To make me fantastic, I have to be Rainbow High
In magical colors

You're not decorating a girl for a night on the town
And I'm not a second-rate queen getting kicks with a crown

Next stop will be Europe
The Rainbow's gonna tour, dressed up, somewhere to go
We'll put on a show

Look out, mighty Europe
Because you oughta know whatcha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of
Just a little touch of
Argentina's brand of star quality

Yesterday, I watched Moonraker. It had probably been ten years plus since I saw it. I thought it was always a fun Bond film. I would love to get hold of the Spartacus Criterion Collection. i have to check out what extras come with it.

watched my new copy of the shadow and judge dredd.
oddly enough, you can hear a clip from the THX logo right before the dts logo shows up.
analog sound on the shadow is excellent, and the digital stereo tracks on judge dredd are excellent.

"MEN IN BLACK" (1997)Dolby Digital AC-3 Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System.

The Laserdisc beats the R2-DVD over dynamics which is bet more louder on the effects and often a few db bit more than dialouge on some scenes when comparing on the SPL metre.

Whiteout (2009) dtshdma 5.1 Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System three showings last Saturday night.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteout_(Oni_Press)

The film bombed/flopped but the story in which it takes place at looks cool a crime mystery at the south pole.

Kate Beckinsale is hot even in cold surroundings. :)

This afternoons film has been "Man of Steel" (2013) dtsHDMA 7.1 Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System

Bring on the Hans Zimmer drums! I'm surprised I didn't wind up with splitting headache.

The dtsHDMA 7.1 wasn't all that super low as I was expecting it to be. No real lows below 20Hz down to 8Hz it more less stops around just past 20Hz. Dynamics are not as brutal as SUPERMAN RETURNS on HD-DVD. All films are mixed differently.

It sounds like a faint distant voices/choir is heard in the end credits between "An Ideal of Hope" 2:12:49 - 2:15:13. Surprised the 4 zone surrounds was active all the way though with an extra height surrounded added in on my system.

The seats vibrated enough with the PUCKS.

The Lone Ranger (2013) dtsHDMA 7.1 / Lucafilm Ltd THX Sound System.

Not bad going it was enjoyable listening fun for over 2 hours. Nice that "The Lone Ranger" theme was used during the final train action scene of the last 25 mins with guns blazing away and mighty Hi yo. Silver! Away! cracking fun film too bad it got hammered by the critics that resulted in poor box office gross.
