Playing some ALIEN THX AC-3 70mm Dolby, again. Wow the LFE.1 is nuts high on this! I have to reduce the level down to match it with the LCRS. Chapter 4 is like 15db high looking at the SDDS output display levels. Time 16.03 Nostromo landing is roughly 6.5db shy from OVER, when turning fader up +6.5db.

WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005) with fader at 0.0db I think that film goes OVER on a few scenes on the LFE.1.

LCRS levels on ALIEN are around -20db peak with little now and then maybe -17/15db. LFE.1 peak must be around -6db or so? Still glad I bought this title. Its a rare one not on DVD bluray.

Wow now my ALIEN makes it to the end of side A. I hear a faint music score just when image fades to black. So maybe the disc was warped and has now settled flat since its been set up vertically like all my LDs are placed. :) Last time I played back around (15th June 2014) it started skipping just before Kane, was jettisoned into space. A month or so before it wouldn't get past the Kane/ALIEN chest buster dinner scene.

Still might like to try another pressing to see if the crosstalk noise any better on side A.

Hadn't seen it yet. Entertaining. Not as bad as the IMDB rating would have suggested.

I have found all of Tom Sellecks movies to be entertaining. Lassiter is a good one.

Latest Watch List (blu-ray disks bolded):

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Big LotR fan so of course I am going to recommend this.

Star Trek #101: Wolf in Fold/Trouble With Tribbles: Disc #21 [LV 60040-101] - WiF

Star Trek #033/37: Who Mourns for Adonais?/Changeling (1967) [LV 60040-95] - The Changeling

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - This was entertaining and had a great soundtrack. I think the soundtrack had a major influence on me liking this film. I would recommend definitely recommend a watch.

Star Trek #096: Mirror Mirror/Apple: Disc #16 (1967) [LV 60040-96] - The Apple

Star Trek #096: Mirror Mirror/Apple: Disc #16 (1967) [LV 60040-96] - Mirror Mirror

I, Frankenstein - Mediocre at best.

Star Trek #107: Ultimate/Bread & Circuses: Disc #27 [LV 60040-107] - B+C

Star Trek #100: Deadly Years/Obsession: Disc #20 [LV 60040-100] - O

Star Trek #103: Immunity/Private Little War: Disc #23 [LV 60040-103] - Immunity Syndrome

Star Trek #102: The Gamesters of Triskelion/Piece of the Action: Disc #22 [LV 60040-102] - PotA

Star Trek #105: By Any Other Name/Omega Glory: Disc #25 [LV 60040-105] - AON

The Monuments Men - This was a good movie but I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. Admittedly I had very high expectations. Great cast of actors, based on a really important historical basis (if not truly accurate), but the screenplay was lacking. Characters were kept superficial which detracted from the overall feel of the movie. I still recommend a viewing but this could have been one of the "great movies" and it turned to be just "ok."

Star Trek #051/52: Return To Tommorrow/Patterns of Force (1968) [LV 60040-104] - RtT

The Croods - Fairly funny animated movie.

Star Trek #051/52: Return To Tomorrow/Patterns of Force (1968) [LV 60040-104] - PoF

Star Trek #107: Ultimate/Bread & Circuses: Disc #27 [LV 60040-107] - tUC

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Not a bad action flick. Rental worthy.

Star Trek #105: By Any Other Name/Omega Glory: Disc #25 [LV 60040-105] - OG

Star Trek #108: Assignment Earth/Spock's Brain : Disc #28 (1968) [LV 60040-108] - AE

Star Trek #111: Spectre/Day of the Dove: Disc #31 (1968) [LV 60040-111] - SotG

Her - Slightly slow story, but an interesting concept of technology and human interaction.

Star Trek #114: Empath/Elaan of Troylus: Disc #34 (1968) [LV 60040-114] - EoT

Blue Jasmine - Not bad, but not great either. Cate Blanchett did a good job but the rest of the cast was so so. And the movie has no ending.

Star Trek #109: Enterprise/Paradise Syndrome: Disc #29 (1968) [LV 60040-109] PS and EI

Grand Piano - Short suspense thriller.

Star Trek #110: And the Children/Is There in Truth: Disc #30 (1968) [LV 60040-110] - AtCSL

The Call - had some suspenseful moments but plot was a little iffy.

Star Trek #108: Assignment Earth/Spock's Brain : Disc #28 (1968) [LV 60040-108] - SB

Star Trek #110: And the Children Shall Lead/Is There in Truth No Beauty: Disc #30 (1968) [LV 60040-110] -ITiTNB

Star Trek #111: Spectre of the Gun/Day of the Dove: Disc #31 (1968) [LV 60040-111] - DotD

Parker- mediocre at best.

Star Trek #116: Mark of Gideon/That Which Survives: Disc #36 (1988) [LV 60040-116] - TWS

Star Trek #115: Whom God's/Let That Be: Disc #35 [LV 60040-115] - LtbYLB

Jodorowsky's Dune - Very entertaining. If you are a fan of Dune it's a must see.

Star Trek #115: Whom God's/Let That Be: Disc #35 [LV 60040-115] - WGD

Star Trek #116: Mark of Gideon/That Which Survives: Disc #36 (1988) [LV 60040-116] - TMoG

Just back from the cindema where I saw Guardians of the Galaxy - it wasn't great art, but it was a lot of fun - since this is more or less the first day of its release I've whited out the text below to avoid spoilers:

The film begins with the alien abduction of Peter Quill (then aged eight-ish) moments after his mother's death, a fast forward 28 years, then through some fun crime stuff to the moment when Quill and his associates become the titular Guardians and save the galaxy from a stolen McGuffin, one of the Infinity Gems, which is wanted by Thanos, a rather nasty Kree called Ronan, and lots of others.

It isn't without flaws, largely the result of its comic-book origins and decision to give it a 12A rating - most notably, we never really see the results of the frequent use of weapons and general violence; at one point the walking talking(?) tree Groot is nice to a child, later in the film we know logically that the child has to be dead, but we aren't shown it, or much else to point out that people are dying here, and in large numbers, at least in part because of the hero's actions.

Despite this weakness I enjoyed the film; the plot makes about as much sense as most comics, e.g. more than the average Star Trek / Star Wars movie, the sets and special effects are gorgeous and definitely inspired by the comics, and the characterization is pretty good, with running gag about the various aliens not understanding Earth metaphors ("But who put sticks up their asses? It sounds very cruel?"), Rocket Racoon's addiction to seriously overpowered weapons, and so forth.

There are two short scenes in the end credits, neither very important; one shows Drax the Destroyer relaxing by sharpening his knives after the end of the story, with another character doing something funny behind him - the other shows the Collector, who also appeared in the end cuts of Thor 2, drinking with a surprise guest star.

There's apparently going to be a sequel in 2017, I look forward to it.

Even if I was doing 5 TOS discs per day would take 16 days.

In all fairness we've been watching them over a while. Probably about 2 months since starting the series. Also took a 3 wk break for a Vacation in Europe. We're going to start up again and finish the series next week. It's been a lot of fun.

2 months viewing seems about right.

I still have a few TOS laserdiscs I've not watched yet, and still a bundle more to buy.

Noticed any problems with them, picture or sound?

I bought them in a set and unfortunately they were quite abused (the disks, the cover look ok). I have not seen disks so scratched up in my entire life. A few disks in a few places had some static and on one disc I had to fast forward as it got stuck in a loop. Luckily even with all the scratches 99% of the time they played fine.

Watched The Insider (Michael Mann's) on DVD :shh:
A big
One of those movies that deserve watching now and then

My Daughter asked me to watch a "scary" but fun movie tonight.
We're going to enjoy Sleepy Hollow on HDDVD. Girls and johnny Depp ? Not a chance of going wrong with that

I like the level of the dialogue "wipe that smirk of your face" wow that really snaps/bites. Not played the DVD in 8 years or so.

Recently went Ape for the first time and watched all five Planet of the Apes films in a row. The Blu-ray mini-box loses the big book of the old giant set but can be had for around $15 which is an absolute steal. PQ/AQ is great and there are a nice amount of extras. Just wish you didn't have to opt for a tiny lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 ac3 for the original mono. I take it all the LDs were stereo-ized?

The best are of course the original, and my own personal favorite Conquest. The latter especially works better in its uncut version found only on the BD edition. Escape is a good if low-key sci-fi film, and I found quite an enjoyable bit in Beneath despite its low budget, severe compromises and virtual repeating of the entire first film. And there truly is nothing wrong with Battle, despite what people claim, it is just not able to overcome its severely low budget and emphasis on lightening up the story. The BD finally includes the uncut version previously found only on a Japanese LD.

Rank:
POTA-Conquest uncut, tie
Escape
Beneath
Battle

Hello !

Hello !

I love that movie, To Live and Die in L.A.
But I cannot speak french :P
