I got home from a fairly rubbish day at work to find this waiting for me:

King Kong: Special Edition #2 # (1933) [CC102]
Sat and watched it pretty much right away and was amazed at the clarity of the picture, I could hardly believe that it was a 1984 transfer of an already 50+ year old film! I'm looking forward to rewatching it sometime soon whilst listening to the commentary.

It makes a nice couple with Citizen Kane: Special Edition #1 # (1941) [CC101]

Game, The (1997) [ID4386PG]
Most enjoyable. Workmanlike performances and an average film but a terrific disc.

GRAVITY (2013) dtsHDMA 5.1 / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System

I had a sixth sense GRAVITY might turn up today and its a day ahead of March 5th.

Oscar winner and BAFTA winner the sleeper sci-fi action adventure film of 2013 now has landed in this home THX cinema.

I'm totally gob-smacked with opening of the Steven Price score that suddenly cuts out to silence in the vacuum of space with lovely view of the Earth, and distant sounding panned dialouge voices.

As the fictitious space shuttle Explorer gets nearer the dialouge of the astronauts gets a little louder but its playing at soft level.

The mild low all around stillness of space is wowing me in THX sound system. The dtsHDMA 5.1 sounds great.

Wow I like Ed Harris, dialouge panning around the LCR stage channels.

WOW no please oh that was teasing WOW the dialouge of Ed Harris panned behind me.

This is the best sounding Dolby mix film that I have heard in past 14 years! Finally a director that is daring to have dialouge panning around it makes the 2D sound like 3D WOW right the centre back surround with that pan at 0.07.45 as one of the other crew moves around and Sandra and George voices moving around the LCR magic.

No make that the best use of dialouge I've heard in decades! WOW the usage of it is knocking my socks off!

This is listeners feast of wild wide all around 6 channels of dialouge panning. The Dolby-EX is switched on the AVR Onkyo TH SR-875 is set to EX and the dialouge pans that circle split surrounds blend into the centre back smoothly.

The angle of images on the SCOPE screen are positioned ether down the right side surround or left side surround at slanted angles and moves around fluently with delicate smoothness and precision.

This thee reference film for sound by far. In real life we hear dialouge moving around us when we circle ourselves on one spot or when people moving around us behind to the side and in front below us and above.

I generally like wider ratios but I really believe Gravity could benefit from 1.66:1 ratio. I actually liked what Ang Lee did on Life of Pi. There are 3 or 4 instances the aspect ratio changes from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1 and 1.33:1. Some scenes really called for narrower aspect ratio in Gravity.

I understand this subforum is general discussion, but don't you all think it's a bit daft to post multiple blu-ray and HD-DVD discs in a laserdisc forum. Frankly, there are plenty of other places to do and see that. Call me crazy, but I'm more interested in what laserdiscs people have been watching. Or, at the very least, I would prefer not to have to scroll through 50 bloody screenshots of Rush.

I 100% agree with you. The main reason i come to the forum is laser disc discussions.

But its also very easy to scroll past someone's post that you are not interested in.

If i had that big THX sound sytem i would be showing it off every chance i could get too :)

I did start a a threat a while back called "What else have you been watching? (Non LD,CED,VHD,DVHS,HDVD)" for exactly the reasons you mention but it never really caught on.

Post subject:  Re: What have you been watching?

I received US imports of the following movies on Monday 03rd March,

I viewed both of these films Monday evening, and will do so again this evening / weekend.
Ender's Game Blu-ray was region A and so was unable to play, but came with the DVD so I watched this.
I much add that this is the only time that I have come across a fixed region Blu-Ray.

Hopefully will be purchasing the multi region OPPO BDP-105D Darbee version Blu-ray player this year, of which will alleviate this problem, along with bringing myself up to date with 3D and 4K up-scaling.

1) THOR ''The Dark World'' region free
2) ENDER'S GAME region A only

Kind Regards to all
:D

Hi benmbe, dont buy those already region modded oppos for super high mark up. I did mod my bdp105 myself. Its super easy. It took me 15mins. You need 1screw driver for the entire operation. The mid kit is like $60.

Yeah, I think it could've used a taller ratio. I saw it at one of those RPX rooms which has a large screen perfect for 1.85:1, but lacks motorized masking, so I watched Gravity letterboxed. I am not attracted to alternating aspect ratios like in Life of Pi. I thought it was gimmicky that the flying fish came out of the letterbox. If Gravity was consistently 1.85 (opened from 2.35), I would be happier.

The sound, on the other hand, was utterly fantastic. I was skeptic about the fold-down from Dolby Atmos to 5.1 for Blu-ray, but guess what? It still managed to sound awesome, but on a smaller scale.
