Evil dead elite boxset with limited gold discs
Always been a huge fan of evil dead a real horror none of this pg12 crap the special effects are now hokey and the continuity errors are hilarious but its still as raw as ever

The Japanese Herald Videogram Laserdisc is even gritter with a unique cool blue tint to the colour timing. It also has the most picture information out of any release and being a LD from the 80s it has all the scratches and other imperfections on the print which work really well for a film like this.

Not seen that version but like the cover only in the 80s would you have someone on the cover getting his eyeballs poked out.Sort of stuff that made the BBFC wet it's knickers. How was censorship in Australia in the 80s

I wasn't even born in the 80's so I can't tell you first hand. I think there are one or two other Australian members here on LDDB that might be able to field that one.

the picture on alien resurrection is top quality. It probably has the best picture out of all low light films. I don't have the box set but I think Alien disc has the same ac-3 track as the US pressing. This audio track was mastered from the 6-track original mix which is discrete mono surround and stereo subs.

actually Alien is from 1979 which might suggest it was encoded with 70mm Dolby 6-track with split surrounds.

I've watched commando an unhealthy amount over the years from the BBFC cut VHS to the region-1 DVD directors cut special edition. This laserdisc holds up really well with a nice sharp picture. Its just a great switch off your brain action film perfectly suited for Arnie. Also who can forget Bennet the most unscary camp fat bad guy I've ever seen.
Sorry but for some reason my little Jack Russell decided he wanted to be in the picture

Pretty good western. Robert Mitchum is the man. The transfer is fine but the film is in sketchy shape in some parts. Still very watchable.

The disc also includes a nice interview with Robert Wise.

This past week - ALIENS, Die Hard 1,2,3, and Lion King.

That first Die Hard, wow. I hadn't watched it in probably a decade and skipped it on DVD, jogged over it when it's been on cable, but I'm glad I picked it up on LD. I had it downplayed in my head, I'd watched it a lot back in the early 90's, and was "meh" on it, but I'm back on it now. Yes, it's big stupid action and it does have flaws. Deputy Dwayne drives me nuts, but to me it still boils down to huge fun, some decent actors, and with it's abundance, it's a freaking steal on any any format. On a scale of 5 LD's, I'd give it 3.5, on a price scale I'd give it a chubbin' 5.

And on to Lion King, I'd recommend it even if you're not a big fan of the particular film or Disney, based solely on it being absolutely gorgeous. I've watched it all the way through twice since I grabbed it. If I had an AV store in the 90's, this definitely would have been worked out on a demo setup. I'm going to find a used DVD for comparisons on my televisions and DVD players.

Saw Tarzan (1999) [PILA-3040] last night. Haven't seen it for almost fifteen years and I have to say that even though I'm not a fan of Disney, this one has aged well to me. It was more grandiloquent than their earlier films which I think gives Disney a new sort of trademark. Music is great, but what I appreciate the most is the character development between Tarzan and Kerchak. Their hostility to eachother (because Tarzan isn't one of them) kind of makes me think of the racism that has existed in the world. Jane looks like the Swedish politican Annie Lööf by the way.

Picture-wise, I think it's the first time I've had to use the YNR on my player. The background noise and flickering got quite annoying but with the YNR set right (so it doesn't get smeared or pixelated), it was gone and gave me a beautiful picture. Textures were very good and noise was low for most part, although darker scenes could be harder to watch. Colors were very vivid and never too strong, which is great. Overall, I'd say it's the best looking of all Disney films I've seen on Laserdisc. Only real issue was that some small checkerboard was visible in fast-moving sequences. I tried to set the comb filter to minimize it but I never got rid of it.

Audio was also great but not as spectacular. The action sequences felt a bit too heavy but it is still a well made mix with no distortion or noise. Bass is somewhat thin however. Nice overall but I expected more.

Just watched Apollo 13 (DTS, but no system) with my housemate, who hadn't seen it before :) Looked nice and sounded good, even from the analog channels.
