Watched the dts Laserdisc pressing (again) of THE X-FILES FIGHT THE FUTURE (1998) last month.

"There was bees corn crops."

I was doing a Bee test with matrix overhead surround switched on and DAMN  it was more freaky scary as it could feel the bass mid of the bees pressing on me mildly and panicking as the bees fly and buzz all-around surrounding the room. The last few seconds of the scene with single few bee buzzing sounds made me really think a bee was in the room. Not cool. Glad I didn't have to call a bee wrangler.

Analogue is set for switching between PRESERT modes on the SDDS processor from discrete to analouge otherwise it the digital would produce a raw dts SHHHHHHH noise.

Watched

last night. I hadn't seen it since the theatrical run in the early 80's. Jamie Lee is in fine form and the disco dance scene at the actual prom was fantastic! The movie was pretty tame as far as slasher films go as this was a very early entry of the genre. The movie is pretty amusing in spots and features the world's most inept killer. I was slapping my forehead in disbelief half the time. Image is pretty soft and pretty murky at least in the beginning of the film, but that was possibly because it is "in the past" sequence to set up the film. I kept tweaking my settings to see if it would improve and finally got it to be decent for the bulk of the film. Sound was mono, which my receiver converted to Dolby Pro Logic II and it sounded fine, but nothing to write home about. Extras are limited to two trailers, which are actually pretty good.

The Fugitive
Image
Fugitive, The (1993) [21000]

volume -15db, subwoofer on/crossover disabled, THX dolby stereo.
the train wreck and berkley dam scenes produced excellent low end bass (current settings: front speakers large, all others small, 100hz, subwoofer PLUS)

if you have a subwoofer, you should set all your speakers to small including fronts regardless they low frequency handling. Set subwoofer mode to "LFE only" and never use "lfe+fronts". Having the fronts set to large with a subwoofer causes more sonic problems.

well, i have the 59txi, and i haven't had any "sonic" problems.
my front towers go down to around 40hz, my center speaker is about 70hz. surrounds reach 100-120hz.
current settings: front speakers "large" and surrounds "small", crossover at 100hz, subwoofer is set to "plus"

I watched the Boyz in the Hood Criterion Collection.
Such a good movie.
Lawrence Fishburn was just born cool i'm guessing. I love Ice Cube, probably his best movie although i love Friday.
The picture quality was great. Very clear and bright.
I highly recommend the movie to anyone who hasn't seen it. And recommend the LD to any collector.

Terminator 2 THX squeeze. To be honest not a big fan of T2.I prefer the darker tone of the first Terminator film. This feels overblown and a little too long.

Now showing
ALIEN (1979) 70mm six-track DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL THX / Lucasfilm Ltd THX sound system / JBL 49 speakers.
Wow the Dolby mix is way different along with the score and trying to adjust my mind to this.
Some of the music cues are rather abrupt and some sound effects and dialouge and dialouge pans are way different to Region 1 DVD THX later release same as the bluray but this version isn't on the bluray.
I never saw ALIEN 70mm Dolby at the cinema only the 35mm optical Dolby Stereo at a late night show at the ABC screen 2 summertime 1990.

Image

Image
Removed the audio mixer and connected up one of x2 Yamaha DSR70 for augmenting the lows from LCR sent to the HK AVP1a.

Wow the picture is Laserdisc nice looking.

Alien (1979) [8760-85]

Some crosstalk as cropped up.

Image

I feel its ether pressing snag a I have expedience it on several THX fox CLV titles now. I don't see it on all my titles. I doubt it could be my Pioneer DVL-909 or then maybe it is or maybe it isn't. Unless someone who knows how to align would do it at my home as I'm letting my Pioneer 909 out of my sight for 1 second.

I can always connect up the CLD-2850 for a few minutes and play the 30 mins into the film to see it shows up.

Image

Ripley: Unfortunately, by, uh, breaking quarantine, you risk everybody's life.

Ripley: That's a pretty big risk for a Science Officer. It's, uh, not exactly out of the manual, is it?

Ash: I do take my responsibilities as seriously as you, you know.
You do your job and let me do mine, yes?

Image

Brief 50Hz noise on the mix when the ALIEN gets blown towards the hatch at 53:45 I can see the hum on RTA the noise soon goes away.

54:31 with the sound of the rocket engines or what ever that sound is on the surrounds sounds neat always makes me look behind as Ripley see the end of the ALIEN...?

Image

Image

Come on cat. Ripley and Jones the cat go to sleep.

Image

Fade out to black star field. Brilliant still a classic sci-fi horror film.

Image

(Symphony No. .... Symphony No.2 "Romantic" - Howard Hanson) seems very fitting end for the films end credits. Played end credits at least over 10 times. :D Turn fader up.

Image

Fantastic cast.

Sound remastered from the 6-track magnetic masters prepared for the original 70mm theatrical prints.

The 70mm 6-track sound mix used for this AC-3 disc was mixed for SENSURROUND release as a test because Fox was considering adopting the MCA SENSURROUND Special Effects System after the failure of their "Sound 360" system. However Fox decided to go with the cheaper Dolby Stereo System instead, but the 70mm SENSURROUND mix was still used with some theaters employing SENSURROUND horns for their 70mm showings. Thus, this disc has deep, infrasonic bass that isn't present in any other video release. It also has some different music cues making it a one of a kind version of the film. The 2 channel Dolby Stereo MP Matrix surround mix on the LD's digital tracks was monitored using the modified Tate DES surround decoding system

As bonus extra the ALIEN audio books a cracking listening and I have played it over 100 times over the past several months.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tigHBPqr7lI

Update damage to side 1 55mins Kane wakes up and dinner scene as spoiled my appetite for the film with skipping and jumping I had to force player into side B before it did any damage.

No visible surface scratch marks I can see near to the outer edge as that where it would be and I have looked for a good several minutes under bright light.

I thought it might be warped and placed a 1 pence coin and slid it around the disc gently and saw now signs of buckled warp inner or outer edges.

Sent seller feedback and normally I give my sellers 100% even if it was cheap throw-away pen for 15 pence. I had no choice to give bad feedback.

Well plenty of these ALIEN AC-3 pressings maybe home owner and not just some shop that also deals in CD and records.

I've lowered my rating on the discs condition by nearly half.
