Watched the letterbox LD of ET today. If I'd known I would have waited until tomorrow, the 9th is the 32nd anniversary of its' release here.
Near the end of side 1 there started a 'roll' going vertically, it only lasted a few minutes then the side changed. Side 2 played fine.

The Great Escape-Criterion 2nd corrected issue.

Haven't seen this in ages, and while it still may be a bit overlong, it uses the large canvas to give a greater sense of scope to the story.

The transfer is solid, and this film has always been on the softer side. The audio is on the whole good with some high end distortion that isn't too distracting. Color seems balanced and unlike the Blu-ray which got a teal dosing. (But otherwise looks solid save for some DNR.) I'm curious about the old MGM DVD which reveals more of a 2.6 frame which is supposedly from a print without soundtrack. Is the MGM laser this way as well?

Enjoyed The War of The roses once again

With Turner, De Vito and Douglas there's not much that can go wrong IMHO

Another watching of ALIEN this afternoon.

Alien (1979) [8760-85]

Sure takes some getting used to this 70mm mix release.

Chapter 8, 40m.30s-35s has the medical cutting tool makes an incision on the ALIEN facehuger knuckle a top end 10,000Khz across the LCR HF horns down a few db on stages left/right as its more mixed to centre, pinches my ears.

Odd? ALIEN side A almost made it to the end. First time a few months ago the disc was jumping and scattering with scenes jumbled up a fast rate speed from the scene in the medical bay and wouldn't make it though the Kane, ALIEN dinner scene.

The disc did make it this time as I was getting ready to switch to side B. It didn't make it all the way to end where, Kane is shot out into space, the disc skipped and switched to side B.
Not sure if its warped at the outer edge of the disc or what?

Wow this Dolby 70mm AC-3 snaps with some brutal dynamics that makes me jump a few times.

Just saw The Big Boss on Blu-Ray. Bruce Lee is always awesome and even though it seem to be his least popular film, I enjoyed it alot. Picture quality was mostly great, except for a slight reddish tone in a handful of scenes and one shot that looked exactly like a DVD. Other than that, it's surprisingly tight and film-like.

Just watched "the machine (2013)" its the best android scifi since the blade runner. The budget is just under 1 million pound its unbelievably good. I recommend it to anyone who likes the blade runner. I will go saying as far as its the best scifi I ve seen in the past decade.

Selections pulled from the 40 anime LDs I bought the other day… Quite a bit of hentai in there, most of which is pretty "ugh" as usual.

Arrived today on THX laserdisc.

NOW SHOWING TONIGHT.

Towering Inferno, The (1974) [1071-85]

Image
Sure would like to own the UK quad poster.

THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974) playing on Dolby CP500 Sony SDDS DFP-D3000, Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System and 49 JBL speakers Dolby Atmos 21.1 ready.

Listening closely to this digitally remastered THX pressing for directional dialouge panning that has been slightly altered over the bluray release dtsHDMA 5.1 Dolby 4.0 (70mm six-track mag) and I think the region 2. (2.0 Dolby surround) some dialouge panning scenes have been mixed to centre.
I have reduced the centre channel to get the half dialouge panning line chapter 9, 36m:31s "This can't be right"? "Its too hot" on (stage right).

Problem with disc 1 side B chapter 16, 19m:07 "Its a ruptured gas line get back"! 19m:09s distortion crackle on stage left.

Watched the Criterion Wizard of Oz w/my sick housemate the other day. Was quite nice :)

It was also amusing to explain to her why people paid more for a version you had to flip more often...

Post subject:  Re: What have you been watching?

Arrived today bluray, EARTHQUAKE (1974) dtsHDMA 5.1 / 2.1 Sensurround.
Now being played in Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System.

Image

Several waterfalls and a few things I noticed on the bluray just seconds before THE BIG ONE rumbled up! Was mild faint thumping sound around the 60Hz. I managed to capture a waterfall of it.

Image

Then monitored The Big One LFE.1 dtsHDMA and asides from being pitched down a few cycles lower over the region 2 DVD which is PAL speed-up, I don't see any real change between the two,

Image

I then checked the 2.1 (firstly dialouge isn't that louder as its been played with phantom stage and stereo left/right I find it a bit distracting as I prefer the solid centre channel with the common dialouge anchored to centre). The LFE.1 was milder weaker signal as the waterfalls show.

Image

Region 2 DVD

Image

I've aimed for a 85 to 90dbC peak which is plenty rumble loud enough (and I have had my fair share if this in Feb 1975) at Sensurround SPL db levels and over the years seeing the next Sensurround Battlestar Galactica (1979) which might have possibly resulted in mild Tinnitus, that I noticed at night time as never once settled down or gone away. It comes and goes on and off most days and often lasts for days at time on ether left or right ear, inner-ear noise. Its no fun.

I think Battlestar had the most intense amount of Sensurround over Earthquake. Had I been aware I could have taken precautions to using earplugs or simply covering my ears back in the 70's to relax easy off some of the intense low frequency pressure on the eardrums.

I can always use the shakers inside my Irwin rocker seats that gives one heck of vibration and when merged with airborne sound it provides a thrilling entertaining effect, without punishing the eardrums, which I think is just silly. Big deal I've my JBL 18" at 126dbC in the past playing EARTHQUAKE dvd and the almost 10 mins was nauseating. You get pressure on the ear, like being down under some water for ether short or long duration. In other words it feels, uncomfortable.

Image

Well at least the Universal logo is here on this, one as it was removed from the region 2 DVD that I have and replaced with that dreadful "E.T. 20th Universal logo". They should have included the SENSURROUND warning at the start of the Universal logo opening, that is what its all about.

Image

Image

Image

I like the aftershock tremor rumble during the scene above where some more LFE.1 comes on and vibrating the seats.

Why didn't Moses, just part the water?

Watched an until-now sealed copy of "The Bear"

The sleeve said the disk was in widescreen by request of the filmmakers... and the only US DVD is P&S.
