Watching the original on region 2 DVD, ROBOCOP (1987) presented in 6-track Dolby Stereo / Lucasflm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL 4.1kw

Chapter 23 is bass, sub bass extension and LFE..1 THX nuts with ED-209 destroying the office floor with auto machine-gun and rockets being fired.

The final fight chapter 28 Robcop vs Clarence J. Boddicker gang, epic showdown Stephan H Flick, John Pospisil amazing sound effects editing and Basil Poledouris cool score. This film just gets bigger on the dynamics in the last 15 mins.

"I got him Clarence" KABOOOM!!!

"Nice shooting', son. What's you're name?"

"Murphy."

Classic film.

I particularly enjoy using my LD player for movies that haven't yet had a proper release on DVD/BD, and about once a month I host an "obscure movie night" with friends, where I play such movies. The last one was "The Runestone" [LD 68953-WS], and next up is "Colossus: The Forbin Project" [43128].

I also recently played "The Keep" [LV 1563-WS] for my own enjoyment (strange movie, can't say I truly like it, but am a Tangerine Dream fan, and dig the soundtrack), and currently have a copy of "Delusion" [90786] in transit.

Just watched Return of the Jedi. Not my favourite but I got a Star Wars mood and felt like watching this one.

Spun one of my wife's favorites last night

Image

Very good video and audio. It was projected in 70mm in the theater with a 6 track audio scheme. Whatever they did, it made for a helluva good transfer to LD.

Tonight, watching Stagecoach on DVR from a recent TCM broadcast.

Kramer vs. Kramer on LD. Lots of EE halos and specs on side A of this pressing, strangely its much better on side B.

Got a few bluray's today.

Image

I quickly watched and listened to some Apocalypse Now (1979) damn its bright sounding. Nice to see it in fuller SCOPE rather than that cropped version. I have seen the 35mm Dolby Stereo A-type at the local Odeon in small tiny screen mid 1990's.

ROBOCOP (1987) remastered with same audio commentary as on the DVD box set.
The image/picture looks looks nice even on the CRT 4:3 and when I can be asked to use the projector for myself I'm sure it would look even nicer.

The film mix sounds brilliant with ED-209 and Robocop/Murphy turning the office floor into war zone. The low end footfalls of ED-209 stomp around thumb, thumb, thump like Earthquake rumble.

I'll get around to watching Bullitt (1968) Steve McQueen, later in the night.

Captain Phillips (2013) get around to that later.

Captain Phillips (2013) dtsHDMA 5.1 Lucasfilm Ltd THX sound system.

Based on true events of a container ship that was hijacked by pyrites in 2009, who take the ships captain Phillips, hostage.

Sound wise it seemed to have something going for it within 30 mins but for modern day film, I was bored with the sub bass and bass and common centre dialouge all the time.

Mastered in 4K I wouldn't waste £10 grand on a 4k projector for film that seems unlikely to have multiple plays.

Well I'm now waiting for GRAVITY dtsHDMA 5.1 and from listening to the clips on youtube with now and then dialouge panning it might seem likely to win best sound effects editing and best sound mix.

Captain Phillips gets 4 out of 10  its a RENTAL! I wasted £14.95 on this lemon but at least I played some scenes over a few times to analyze the sound so that would be like spending £14.95 several times at the cinema as £14.95 is often the common ticket price in most cinemas, with often £16.99 and even £20.00 is a rip off today.

Bullitt (1968) Dolby 2.0 stereo Lucasfilm Ltd THX sound system.

I haven't seen this film since on tv some 20 years or so ago. I enjoyed more this time around. To bad the soundtrack isn't lossless.

The car chase is nicely done with steady music at first and when the chase picks up speed its just the sound effects hardly any dialouge and no music and I think it plays well with just the sound effects and the scenes of San Francisco.

Oscar winner for film editing.

Robert Vaughn has starred alongside Steve McQueen in several films The Magnificent Seven and The Towering Inferno.

I liked the camera shots and stylizing craft of the photography with Steve McQueen in the set up in rear view mirror in taxi car while he sits at back of car.

Brilliant extras on the bluray, on the art and craft of film editing that makes it the film

Watched a little more Apocalypse Now (1979) theatrical on the projector. The 2.35:1 is slightly bit cropped on the projector by 3% for each side. The actual screen captures directly from the source shows a tiny extra small bit on the sides. The DVD and Laserdisc versions badly cropped off at at silly 2.0:1. My Sony CRT 4:3 really over scans the image I can't see the helicopter on far right or other small detail on the left. The narrowness of the image is correct just not enough alignment to size it up but I don't mind.

Image

Image

This camera shot took me ages to figure out or find a camera mode setting and adjusting some other settings. Otherwise the image was coming out with a dark green.

Image

Skin tone colour came out a bit warm but it was really tricky to find a camera mode setting. The image looks a bit better as it is in the room even on crappy bed sheet.

Image

I used another camera mode setting here as the bed sheet was being lit up in the room and the image looked washed out. My eye kinder sees the image with slight blackness around the bed sheet.
