Last night after work, I watched John Wayne's "The Comancheros". I have A Dean Martin movie "The Silencers" on its way to me from an Ebay sell. 8-)

Went to the cinema and watched Terminator Genisys tonight. Great to see Arnold again! Some funny moments throughout the movie and I'm curious what the next installment in the series will give us.

I Finally watched True Lies Dtheater dts
very enjoyable 1080 hd picture  and sadly no BR available, but with UHD BR coming I suspect it might be soon....
Can't wait to own The Abyss and true lies on a shiny little UHD BR disc.

I found myself always grabbing the dts ld for some strange reason.... :shh: :D
You can't beat the Harrier scene soundwise IMHO
but I like the LD better 8-)

I watched Beverly Hills Cop 3 last night with a friend. I was surprised by the image quality--it appears to be a well-mastered disc.

I watched one of my all-time favorite movies, The Hotel New Hampshire, this weekend. My previous copy had severe rot on side 2. This one played flawlessly.

I watched this last night: Firefox (1982) [11219 LV]
The disc was ok - nice clear analogue sound and acceptable PQ but the film is utter rubbish. Its greatest redeeming feature was that it features Warren Clarke.

I've been watching at least a few LD movies every week it seems like. I'm relatively new to the format, so I still have a pretty good backlog of films I'd like to see on it. Today's presentation was Stargate (1994), yesterday's was Speed (1994), and Monday's was The Hunt for Red October (1990). Speed was kind of a let down compared to how I remembered liking it as a kid. The other two are very good.

It's interesting how many 3-side movies mislabel the last side as CLV when it's really CAV.

How is the audio on Hunt for Red October? All the Blu-ray releases of it have a terrible mix that makes dialogue almost impossible to hear.

I'm having a 007 marathon

With spectre on it's way I was  might be a good idea to refresh my memories.
Yesterday evening featured " james? How the hell are we going to get those diamonds down again"

All the way trough the connery ones, watched a few roger moore films .
Ah, octopussy is up next, can't wait to see Magda turning down the balcony (once again)

Octopussy and for your eyes only have a special place in my heart! They are the most beautiful stylish bond films imho not to mention the soundtrack.

Actually I only "disliked" Die another day. It was a bit too... Well, there was something animated about that movie.

I'm very excited about the upcoming Spectre. Looks very "vintage" or whatever you call that...

Last night I watched my copy of Fantasia, the Limited Commemorative Edition dated 1991. There are 3 LD's in the set. 5 sides are in CAV format and the 6'th side is in CLV format. The PQ is very good to excellent with some sections showing the film grain. Very beautiful music for listening to let alone watch the video.

I haven't watched the BD to compare against, but on its own I'd say the LD was mixed such that dialog was easy to hear and understand. I don't remember it being annoyingly drowned out or anything, and firing it up briefly this morning on the last side seemed to confirm that it's good.

Forgotten One, The [ID2048AC]

There are scary moments involving one of the main characters portraying the female ghost, but the movie is to kind and doesn't justify what I associate with horror. The movie is filled with romance and thrilling mystery as well.
Overall, I did like the movie and I felt it was a nice supplement to my collection.

Next up will be "Fever" with Sam Neill and Armand Assante.

Dante's Peak (1997) THX Laserdisc
Dolby Stereo Digital AC-3 5.1 / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL

Levels set at 85db for explosive and lots of vibrating bass and clear dialogue.

Dante's Peak (1997) [43311]
Dante's rot at present is still the same with small minor intermittent flickers acorss the picture so looks like it will hold. Upgrade would be ether dts THX LD or Signature Collection, the two DVD's are okay but the LD sound is better.

Watched the pod race sequence from Episode I the other day. The Pro-Logic mix on it is damn great. One of the best I've ever heard. PQ is pretty good. I guess its one of the best since its one of the last major releases on the format.

Recording them to DVD for my nephew. He told me he wanted to see the "real verisons" of episodes 4, 5 and 6 before episode 7 comes out.

I think my sister is raising him right.

Alive/Alive: 20 Years Later (1993)

Arrived in the mail this morning with double Laserdisc package.

ALIVE (1993)
Dolby Stereo AC-3 / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional x73 speakers

Image

Image

Spiritually moving story of miracle of the Andes out of 45 and flight crew that crashed and no food the survives were forced to do the unthinkable of eating their family/friends if they were to make it out of this bad situation, Alive.

Only a few braved the perilous trek though the mountains to seek help. 16 only made it of the mountains after 72 days.

Image

Disc 1 side 1 starts off in CAV nice.

Image

Opening prologue to the story tells it nicely with clear warm dialogue centre stage.

Image

The sound of the tail of the plane roars along the right surround arrays to the front LCR stage channels, just like at Empire Leicester Square, Empire 1, 5th May 1993.

Image

Image

Image

Pilots throttle up the planes engines to clear the jagged mountain tops.

Image

Image

Aft end of the tail smashes against the top of the mountains in one of cinemas most horrendous miracle plane crashes its amazing so many where alive after a crash like that. Bass slams over LCR accompanied with LFE.1 for rocker seat jolt!

At around frame 12913 the top part fuselage rips apart on the surrounds that make me look upwards alarmingly!

With PLIIx switched ON I hear it ripping apart behind me, looking over my shoulder as I would if at a cinema.

Image

If that wasn't enough the plane glides though the air powerless where starboard wing clips the top of mountain, too much.

The plane comes to puffy muffled, full abrupt STOP! As the plane hits a large pile of snow The jolt throws the passengers over the tops of seats and seats being buckled at same time, it makes my skin crawl.

The picture is better quality over the PAL pressing that I have, were the whites appear slightly pink-ish. The whites on the NTSC pressing have a bit of white to the snow.

James Newton Howard, score is bit underrated it plays nicely against the story.

Skywalker sound services and additional re-recording mixing by legendary Steve Maslow, Kevin O'Connell and Gregg Landaker.

Watched Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, The (1962) [PILF-2198] last night. Got the movie for free in excellent condition, and have heard it isn't on DVD or Blu-Ray. This is supposed to be the most complete version of the movie. Far from the greatest movie, but still a fun watch. Really interesting with the cinerama filming. Would be lovely to see a fully restored edition on Blu-Ray, but that probably isn't going to happen.
