Post subject:  Underwater Themed Feature Films

I have listed the underwater themed feature films below. I really like this kind of films. Most will say the Abyss is the best one out of the bunch and they are probably right but I disagree that it is the most fun to watch. My favorites are Leviathan and DeepStar Six in order. The Abyss is just too long for many re-watches (too many side flips and disc swaps too). I listed what I thought the best versions of each film. Feel free to recommend more underwater themed films and their best versions.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) [1587 CS]

Grand Bleu, Le: version longue (The Big Blue) (1988) (Uncut) [PILF-1538]

Warlords of Atlantis - No LD release

Atlantis (1991) [PILH-1003] - Hi-Vision LD

Atlantis (1991) [PILR-2017]

Deep, The (1977) [PSE91-01]

Deep Blue Sea (1999) [17242] - late release!

Goliath Awaits (1981) [LDCVM5235]

Sphere (1998) [15331]

Mysterious Island (1961) [PSE92-26]

Beneath The 12 Mile Reef

Leviathan (1989) [ML101707]

Lords of the Deep(1989) - No LD release? (French R2 DVD and US VHS exist)

Evil Below, The (1989) [PILF-7124]

Endless Descent (The Rift) (1990) [ID8235IV]

DeepStar Six (1989) [PILF-1012] - OAR

Abyss, The (1989) [1561-85]

Abyss, The: Special Edition (1989) (Uncut) [1988-85]
Abyss, The: Special Edition (1989) (Uncut) [1988-80] - Jim Cameron's Special P&S Version

Hunt for Red October, The (1990) [LV 32020-WS]

Crimson Tide (1995) [12156 AS] DTS!

Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) [NJL-99543]

Ice Station Zebra (1968) [ML101888]

Below (2002) - No LD

Boot, Das (The Boat) (1981) (Uncut) [99916]

K-19: The Widow Maker (2002) - No LD (one of the most expensive independent films)

Phantom - No LD

Black Sea (2014) - No LD

TV Series

SeaQuest DSV - No LD

One that I wish was on LD is Warlords of Atlantis. No US DVD and the Region 2 is out of print!

Sphere

Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef (so so film but has good underwater photography and a good soundtrack)

Goliath Awaits - relatively little underwater photography but a neat (albeit implausible) idea. Originally a 3 hour or so miniseries a good chunk of it was cut out for the LD and VHS releases which leaves the remainder a pretty muddled mess. Never been released on dvd as far as I know so that leaves the LD the best of bad alternatives.

Mysterious Island has a few underwater scenes which are well done.

One of those where you don't want to stop and think about the implausabilities - just go along for the ride.

I remember liking Leviathan back in the day entirely because of the cast (Robocop meets Max Headroom) but in the end it's basically Alien underwater, a horror movie where people are mutilated and killed repeatedly until only the hottest and whiteest people are left at the end. Lots of perfectly fine movies fit this simple formula though, so that's not always a bad thing. I'll have to give it another watch I guess, the first since it hit rental VHS. :)

So watched Leviathan. Good show and I'm happy to have it in the collection. It's maybe more like the thing rather than alien but there are obvious themes of a host of 80s films. It's one of those put it on and you get 5 minutes of oh look that's him out of robocop / ghost busters / home alone / Rambo / batteries not included and if that doesn't make you want to watch it nothing will.

There is always Sea Hunt. Although I picked up a couple of dvds with a few episodes of that series and it has not aged well. Of course I was very little when I watched it initially so my judgment back then was likely not the best.

elahrairrah,

You can get "Warlords of Atlantis" easily on R2 DVD from Germany. English language is available and the print used is the same as on the R2 UK DVD.

U-571, doah ..... How did that late release get missed ?

Reminded me of "Sub Down" PILF-2629 to add ..........

Also, lets add George Pal's "Atlantis, the Lost Continent" ...... Not totally underwater however Neptune does make an appearance and the sea plays a major role ........

It is about a warehouse type store that gets flooded by a tsunami after an earthquake - the lower levels are parking and totally flooded with a few people trapped in vehicles - the upper floor is the shopping area and people are trapped on top of the shelving racks with a shark roaming about picking people off. So a lot of the footage is shot underwater - just not in the ocean.
