Yesterday my copy of Schindler's List: Collector's Edition (1993) [42132] arrived through the post. I was very impressed with the LD and placed it proudly up on my shelf right next to Saving Private Ryan (1998) [ID5916DW]. I have to put my movies in alphabetical order. But just then I stopped, and looked... I've seen those two titles sitting right next to each other somewhere else! I open up my DVD collection and sure enough there they both are right next to each other. It got me thinking about how it shows a lot about what films you really love and how they've had an impact on your life when you start to accrue multiple copies of them.

Here's my list of multiples with their formats I own them on:

Star Wars (VHS, VCD, LD, DVD)
Mortal Kombat (VCD, LD, DVD)
Apocalypse Now (LD, DVD)
Blue Velvet (LD, DVD)
Lost Highway (LD, DVD)
Eraserhead (VHS, DVD)
Romeo + Juliet (LD, DVD)
Saving Private Ryan (LD, DVD)
Schindler's List (LD, DVD)
The Truman Show (LD, DVD)
Terminator 2 (LD, DVD)
Event Horizon (LD, DVD)
Soldier (LD, DVD)
Blade Runner (VHS, DVD)
Dune (LD, DVD)
Die Hard (VHS, LD, DVD)
Die Hard 2 (LD, DVD)
Good Will Hunting (LD, DVD)
Dead Poets Society (LD, DVD)
Liar Liar (LD, DVD)
Bad Boys (LD, DVD)
The Rock (LD, DVD)

That's all I can think of now. It is quite an eclectic mix, and I love every one of them.

I've a habit of gathering duplicates as well.
I don't really collect movies on LD, yet almost all that I have bought myself (as opposed to got free with players) I already owned on DVD or VHS!

I also like buying different versions of the same title on LD for the different cover art or slight differences in the packaging for 1st or 2nd editions etc.
I think this stems from collecting CDs in the same fashion over the last 25 years.

How did you get that on HD-DVD?
Or are you talking about the 2004 release?
So then how do you manage to get a 2004 film on LD?
Something ain't right here...

I'm sure mikeystoyz was refering to the 1978 film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077402/, which shares the same name as the 2004 film. :)

If that's the case though, he's asking how he got the 1978 Dawn of the Dead on HD-DVD.

The 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake is on HD-DVD, yes, but the 1978 original is not.

That being said, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead is not on Laserdisc either.

So there is a problem with the formats and/or the the actual title he is talking about.

To my understanding, there is a blu-ray release of the 1978 Dawn of the Dead. Perhaps that is what he meant?

I think I own eight copies of A Clockwork Orange. One Vhs, one LD, three Dvd's, one Umd, one Hd-Dvd and one Blu-Ray.
I'm not sure how many duplicates I own and it's a hard question for me to answer. For instance, I once bought the Blu-Ray edition of Stagecoach by Criterion Collection. Some months ago, I purchased a John Wayne box set by Atlantic that contained that movie and three other flicks. I also come to think of Apollo 13 that I own on both LD and Hd-Dvd but I haven't even seen the film yet.

I'll try to list all the duplicates I own later but if I have to be honest, if I wouldn't spend as much money as I do on upgrading some movies, my collection would probably have a better selection of movies. Sometimes I just want to buy a new edition of a movie because I'm embarresed with my current edition. I would take The Third Man as an example, I only own a very cheap bare-bones Dvd of it but I would love to pick up the Criterion one day if it wasn't so darn expensive.

I don't see anything embarrassing on that list. I have three copies of Mortal Kombat. And whilst I did list Die Hard 2 in my lot, I only got a duplicate copy of that as it was in a pack with a bunch of other titles. MK is all on purpose, I specifically went looking for a VCD copy and then the DVD, and because it didn't have the commentary track that was on the laserdisc, I just had to have that too.

I can now add Ghost in the Shell to my list. Just got the Blu-ray edition to place alongside my existing DVD copy. I watched the GITS 2.0 version of the film, the new sound mix was incredible, but has anyone else found the new computer animations and effects a little jarring and uneccessary?

Yup the new effects they added into the 2.0 version were pretty awful.
And I fully agree with you, the new sound mix is really enjoyable, compared to the flat one of the original version.

I'm trying to really cut down on the number of multiple dips, but they just seem to come. My winner is Adventures of Robin Hood

LD - Criterion CAV
LD - Criterion CLV
DVD - Warner's Special Edition
HDDVD

I once owned another non-Criterion copy of the LD but I've since gotten rid of it.

I prefer Casino over Goodfellas. I know Goodfellas came first and gets all the praise, but I honestly got bored in that and was dissatisfied with the ending. The style, music, cinematography and structure of Casino just appeals to me.

Off the top of my head . . .

The Princess Bride - Criterion Sp Ed LD, Criterion CAV LD, Criterion CLV LD, Nelson Ent LD (this one I recently got autographed by Cary Elwes and Chris Sarandon to give to a friend as a gift--she's a HUGE fan of the movie) and 2x DVD

Dawn of the Dead '78 - Image LD, Republic/Lumivision LD, Elite Ent CAV Collectors Ed., Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition DVD, 2x VHS

(might also be getting the Perfect Collection Box Set soon)
