Post subject:  What have you been watching? (2016)

I saw Shichinin no Samurai yesterday at Filmhuset (Stockholm) in a completely crowded theater. 35mm print from 2002. Had some damage from earlier generations but was overall completely watchable. My third viewing of this masterpiece, yet my first time experiencing Kurosawa on the big screen. This film has aged like wine and remains as one of my top five favorite films ever made. Keeping in mind that when I first saw the film my only choice was the old, rotted Criterion CAV box set and one year later I got around to see their Blu-ray. And now seeing such a nice film print is a real treat, although they left the intermission out which was kind of a let down in my opinion.

Nice few dialouge pans (as well as been clear) some that move smoothly others that wipe over LCR very fast (got be listening!).

Sound effects are cracking listening fun, "Here's my invitation" Kaboom over LCR and LFE.1 with the explosion rising few seconds on the surrounds.

Soft sounds of a clock ticking on chapter 15 in Harry's home along with dialouge is clear and not over played on fader level on my SDDS D3000 at -2.8db. (Other films where there is a clock ticking in the background is so faint in mix level and loudness is just unbearable on Valkyrie, my mind eats breaths, sleeps and lives film soundtracks).

"We meet again, Carlos".

Picture transfer isn't good as the use of EE ruins the film its only a fair picture. Also some contrast saturation is a bit too high due to someone that doesn't know how to do proper colouring on the computer.

Image

Only hope when day comes the HD bluray can mirror the look of 35mm when projected.
Also no near field mixing! Keep it FAR FIELD THEATRICAL!

Watched Straight outta Compton last night. Very good film, a lot of gangsta rap from NWA. The acting was very good, especially the guys playing Ice Cube, Dr.Dre and Eazy E put out very memorable performances. Rap isn't my top genre but when done right, it's very entertaining.

Girl I'm interacting with online says her favorite B&W film is It's a Wonderful Life. Since I mentioned that I've never seen it in its entirety, she's now pressing me to see it. So tonight . . .

It's a classic. Pretty sure it's on many lists of top films of all time. I watched it every year as a kid, so I have the nostalgia factor going, but you should watch it!

A spinning a Laserdisc surround feast Strange Days (1995) with at the time had neat sounding opening with dialouge voices defused along with sound effects around the surrounding surrounds of the viewer.

Bass punches of the Foley is mostly accompanied over the stage bass channels of centre or some panning.

Not a loud deafening mix even thou the 1990's had some deafening SR-D features. Its just loud without going over sheer loud. Crowd scenes towards the end has realism that last for a few short seconds.

Picture still holds up well with colours thou a bit smeared (if looking for it) for the SD analog picture format its still watchable.

That looks like "Bose 802 speaker series" to the left.

Trailer on side 3 has about the same loudness when I saw it at the cinema (trying to think what film I saw around Jan and Feb before the 1st March 1996 release) as it found the trailer rather catching with rushing panting breathing sound on the surrounds.

"You know you want it". on laserdisc.

Watched the first two episodes of the leftovers, the show was highly recommended to me. What a boring show! I am two hours into it, still waiting for something to happen. If I didn't buy the complete season, I would have given up in the first half an hour. Often times, I pull out my phone and play games, it's that bad. This is the second time I get burnt listening to people.

Watched Chasing Amy the other day

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.
That one is going. Kept it around just to watch it one day or another. I had a hard time not pushing "open" :shh:

Somehow this was in storage or just sat on a shelf here for; gee it's got to be at least about 16+ years now. Finally watched it last night. Really a very humorous look at politicians and the political system particularly as it relates to the US. And things only seem to have become worse since then. I thought particularly relevant with the current circus that is the republican primaries where never-mind about politicians in the pocket of big business - big business is the politician!!

Watching Pacific Heights (1990) Dolby Stereo / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional

Rot status Low probability None detected its free of rot.

Picture is about average fine in detail colour tones look fine brightness contrast fine with no artifacts that I can see being added.

Dolby Stereo mix is good production average it has some music and sound effect openness in some outdoor scenes. dialouge remains clear no troubles understanding what is being said.

Extras is only a chase stereo channel check and colour bar test card with 1Khz sine wave at the end of side 2.

Listen out for the "lightsaber" sound effect used a few times in the film on two screen captures below / also mixed in a THX sound system theatre I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Purchased The Martian Just yesterday.
One of few BR discs with 3D I really enjoyed.
Stunning PQ and a superb soundtrack.

Got me Everest 3D along with it... hoping to enjoy it the same.
Came around watching my Lethal Weapon DC AC-3 box on LD.
Happy owner here  It took me some time to get my hands on that

Realorfake3d.com

Check this site up. The Martian is a legit 3D film but Everest is just a conversion. I always check this site before I buy any 3D films, most are fake 3D.

So Jurassic Park from 1993 isn't a real 3D film? I'm shocked!

No, seriously. Nice link to have. A couple of new movies I though were proper 3D movies seem to not be. I do stay away from 3D in general, don't really like it. Avatar was probably the first movie in 3D that impressed me a bit.

Post subject:  Re: What have you been watching?

You can always check imdb tech facts too. I mean their fake conversion is still better than a bluray player or tv doing it on the fly. They have access to cgi elements where are created in 3D models so those instances are real 3D. It's just the composition of the shots were not made 3D in mind. Some films like Tim Burton's Alice was shot in 2D but he knew it was going to be converted to 3D. He made the compositions suitable for such conversion.

So I guess there are really 3 types;

Real 3D
Shot in 2D, post processed to be 3D.
Fake 2D with no initial intension for 3D conversion.

I like 3D if the director intended it to be a 3D film.
