Yeh good recommendation.

A couple or three "re-makes" but the one to watch is the original (1978) directed by Joe Dante & co-produced by Roger Corman.

Also Piranha II (1981) was co-written & co-directed with James Cameron - really "bad".

Not issued on LD (please correct if I am mistaken) but both quite easy to find on other formats.

Enjoy!?!?

Been catching up with season 3 of Bates Motel. Season 4 is not yet available in Norway and there is no known date for it either.
Don't want to ruin the excitement, though I can stream it on the net, but I need the support for subtitles as my mother doesn't understand English and we are watching it together.
There are still some commanding prices for this series on Blu-ray, so I had to search both eBay and Amazon to find reasonable prices without draining my wallet.
Last two episodes of Game of Thrones season 6 has also been viewed as well as Hellraiser 3 - Hell on Earth.

Revisiting Batman Returns. Really want to love this movie but the final 3rd of the film is just head smackingly awful. Penguins with rockets and just the general absence of Batman. I mean Batman really isn't needed in the end. Alfred disables the penguin rocket threat, Catwoman takes care of Max Shreck (Christopher Walken's character. All Batman is does is accidentally run over Penguin's toy duck cart thing. Penguin pretty much kills himself. Ugh.

The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy (1998) and Star Command (1996). Both of them were YouTube transfers and the last one is in fact available on laserdisc as an Hong Kong release but I do not have it.
They were intended and made as pilots for series that never got a chance, probably due to funding and the similarity with Star Trek, Babylon 5 and other titles in that time line, which probably made them pretty common in the sci-fi world and not particularly interesting to everybody.

New sealed brought yesterday and arrived this morning glad the LD postal service is still fast these days.

Wolfen (1981) [22019]

The thing I noticed when taking the LD out the sleeve was the thinness and lighter weight of the LD some Warner discs I have I think are a fraction thicker/heaver.

Image

Image

Using the Just Scan mode on the LG displayed a wider frame over the 16:9 which only cropped the wider portion of the image off.

Picture Laserdisc is framed at 2.35:1 (wider than the bluray release) colours look nice for the pressing from natural daylight to easy dark night scenes. The wolfen thermal vision effect looks creepy as it shows the point of view of the wolfs stalking for prey. Soft bits of dirt on the print that gives it the feel of a film is nice. if it was a HD picture I'd give it a 10/10 but for this LD pressing I'd give it a 8/10 for picture.

I doubt I'd upgrade to the bluray which looks a bit cropped on the scope framing by 10 or 12% i may have to look for a DVD and see if the pressing is about as same width as the LD for the Dolby 5.1 and "mega sound" that was featured on only a few early 80's Warner Bros films.

Image

Sound mix is fantastic with sound effects moving forwards from LCR and backwards to the matrix mono surrounds with a few subtler sounds moving between. Occasional few dialogue pans gives a film a good feeling of being there. Late James Horner score is class, with pre early STAR TREK II THE WRATH OF KHAN heard from the start and in action scene between packs of wolfens and humans near the end and few early notes for BRAINSTORM.

Image

Softer sounds from a clock ticking in a quiet room with a cat purring sounded realistic.
10/10 for sound mix.

watched Out for justice on japanese LD last night.
movie is still a strong Blockbuster.
I can't believe it's been 25 years since this movie was reliesed.

Mr. Steven Seagal was cool and very brutal in his Blockbuster movies.
It's a crying shame he doesn't make the same quality movies anymore!

Wonder why Mr. Seagal dropped his partnership with Nasso studio company.
They were making good action movies

I watched/listened to Handel's Messiah last night. This was the production done on April 13,1992, the 250th anniversary of the premiere in Dublin in 1792. This is the first time that I have watched the entire musical piece for me. I have heard excerpts from the work, mainly the chorus; but, never the entire work which had excellent music. The video seemed slightly foggy (for want of a better word) which may have been caused by the lighting.

In keeping with Christmas, I watched A Charlie Brown Christmas a few days ago which was produced in 1965.. The LD was produced in 1995.

The street price in 1995 was $28.95. With shipping, my copy cost $28.94. There was not much of a drop in price over 20+ years.

As an aside, the copy I received was still sealed in cellophane.
