EVEREST (2015)
Dolby Stereo TrueHD (atmos) / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional x73

Image

Watched it twice in one night.

Image

Picture detail and lighting was okay.

Image

The wind sound/fx whips up feel a bit. Ice/snow breaking away from ridges has some crunch depth that is all the same typical to about just every other film. Lows don't go down lower enough 20Hz tops for this film.

Image

Dialogue pans from centre to left then left surround arrays then into the rear left back. They should mix films with "GRAVITY dialogue panning" all the time.

Image

Neat how they created the location of the mountain combined with a fake mountain on a sound-stage with green-screen.

The Big Hit (1998)
Not the most impressive AC3-release.
Clean video transfer, sadly - a tiny amount of red/blue speckles at the end of side B.

Here is the most recent watch list. My SO wanted to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation so we have been doing a marathon for the last few months.

Watch List (Blu-ray in Bold):

The Runner - A fairly boring Nicholas Cage politcal drama.

Alien (1979) [8760-85] - Classic Scifi film which is perfect for a Holloween viewing.

San Andreas - Big disaster moving with the Rock. Entertaining.

Monkey Kingdom - Cute disney nature documentary.

Drive - One of my favorites. Highly recommend.

Star Trek Next Generation #001/2: Encounter at Farpoint (1987) [LV 40270-721] -

Tomorrowland - Somewhat of a let down. I had high expectations for this movie.

Star Trek Next Generation #003/4: Naked Now/Code Honor (1987) [LV 40270-103] -

Star Trek Next Generation #005/6: Haven/Where No One Has Gone Before [LV 40270-105] -

The Water Diviner - Very good Russel Crowe movie.

Star Trek Next Generation #007/8: Last Outpost/Lonely Among Us [LV 40270-107] -

Star Trek Next Generation #009/10: Justice/The Battle [LV 40270-109] -

Star Trek Next Generation #011/12: Hide & Q/Too Short A Season [LV 40270-111] -

Star Trek Next Generation #013/14: Big Goodbye/Datalore [LV 40270-113] -

Welcome to Me - I really didn't like this movie. It was weird and the acting was pretty bad.

Star Trek Next Generation #017/18: Home Soil/Bough Breaks [LV 40270-117] -

Jurassic World - Fun big action film. Certainly not as good as the first Jurassic Park movie, but probably 2nd best in the series.

Star Trek Next Generation #021/22: The Arsenal Of Freedom/Skin Of Evil [LV 40270-121] -

Star Trek Next Generation #023/24: Symbiosis/We'll Always Have Paris [LV 40270-123] -

Fading Gigolo - Good movie with John Turturro and Woody Allen.

Star Trek Next Generation #025/26: Conspiracy/Neutral Zone [LV 40270-125] -

Star Trek Next Generation #027/28: Child/Where Silence Has Lease [LV 40270-127] -

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - Fun James Bond like film. Half the fun is looking at the cold-war era style and clothing.

Star Trek Next Generation #029/30: Elementary/Outrageous Okona [LV 40270-129] -

Star Trek Next Generation #031/32: Schizoid Man/Loud As A Whisper (1989) [LV 40270-131] -

Star Trek Next Generation #033/34: Unnatural/Matter of Honor [LV 40270-133] -

Star Trek Next Generation #019/20: Coming Age/Heart Glory [LV 40270-119] -

Ant Man - Surprisingly good superhero movie. I would recommend a watch.

Star Trek Next Generation #037/38: Contagion/The Royale [LV 40270-137] -

Star Trek Next Generation #039/40: Time Squared/Icarus Factor [LV 40270-139] -

What If - Somewhat underwhelming romantic movie with Daniel Radcliff.

Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition (1997) [4102985] -

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - I saw this at the theater. Definitely much better than the prequels.

Star Trek Next Generation #041/42: Pen Pals/Q Who? (1989) [LV 40270-141] -

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - Solid Tom Cruise action movie. If you have seen the other ones in the series you should definitely check it out.

Star Trek Next Generation #043/44: Samaritan Snare/Up the Ladder [LV 40270-143] -

Star Trek Next Generation #045/46: Manhunt/The Emissary [LV 40270-145] -

Terminator: Genisys - Definitely better than the last few in the series but not as good as the first two.

Before We Go - Fairly entertaining movie with a "independent" feel. It was interesting to see Captain America in a different role.

Star Trek Next Generation #047/48: Peak Performance/Shades of Grey [LV 40270-147] -

Pan - Rather dissapointing. I would skip.

Star Trek Next Generation #049/50: Ensigns of Command/Evolution [LV 40270-149] -

Star Trek Next Generation #051/52: Survivors/Who Watches [LV 40270-151] -

Star Trek Next Generation #053/54: the Bonding/b**by Trap [LV 40270-153] -

ParaNorman - Fun animated movie.

Star Trek Next Generation #055/56: the Enemy/The Price [LV 40270-155] -

Star Trek Next Generation #057/58: Vengeance Factor/The Defector [LV 40270-157] -

Star Trek Next Generation #059/60: the Hunted/The High Ground [LV 40270-159] -

Star Trek Next Generation #061/62: Deja Q/Matter of Perspective [LV 40270-161] -

Fantastic 4 - Had pretty low expectations based on the two prior movies,.. pretty much met my expectation.

Star Trek Next Generation #063/64: Yesterday's Enterprise/The Offspring (1990) [LV 40270-163] -

Star Trek Next Generation #065/66: Sins of the Father/Allegiance [LV 40270-165] -

Star Trek Next Generation #067/68: Captain's Holiday/Tin Man [LV 40270-167] -

Southpaw - Rather good boxing movie.

Star Trek Next Generation #069/70: Hollow Pursuits/The Most Toys [LV 40270-169] -

Star Trek Next Generation #071/72: Sarek/Menage A Troi [LV 40270-171] -

Bone Tomahawk - Horror-western genre. Not what I was expecting. I would recommend a viewing.

Star Trek Next Generation #073/74: Transfigurations/Best of Both Worlds #1 (1990) [LV 40270-173] -

Star Trek Next Generation #075/76: Best of Both Worlds #2/Suddenly Human [LV 40270-175] -

Dragon Blade - Pretty bad. It just seemed miscast and was expecting more from the talent.

Star Trek Next Generation #077/78: Brothers/Family [LV 40270-177] -

My Science Project (1985) [360 AS] - Cheezy 80's movie. I'm a sucker for these so I'm going to recommend it.

Star Trek Next Generation #079/80: Remember Me/Legacy [LV 40270-179] -

Star Trek Next Generation #081/82: Reunion/Future Imperfect [LV 40270-181] -

The Last Witch Hunter - Fairly entertaining action movie.

Star Trek Next Generation #083/84: Final Mission/The Loss [LV 40270-183] -

"Evelyn Salt", is on the run.

A few nice dialouge pans about the LCR but could have been more as its not a bad action film with nicely even DME mix not too over loud.

One of few BR discs with 3D I really enjoyed.
Stunning PQ and a superb soundtrack.

Got me Everest 3D along with it... hoping to enjoy it the same.
Came around watching my Lethal Weapon DC AC-3 box on LD.
Happy owner here  It took me some time to get my hands on that

Realorfake3d.com

Check this site up. The Martian is a legit 3D film but Everest is just a conversion. I always check this site before I buy any 3D films, most are fake 3D.

Now there's a tip
I never gave it any
I'm not a huge 3D lover to be honnest but The Martian is the first enjoyable film that would not give me a headache.
Got into the 3D thing since the new display is compatible. On rare occasions I buy a 3D movie. it's nice to see the standard 2D version included. Planning on watching the regular one soon...
Loved The Martian

Disagree about the dialog panning being used more often for more films, it becomes gimmicky. Even in Gravity, its cool for a while, but it starts becoming gimmicky.

The Martian (2015)
dtshdma 7.1 / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional

A few human dialouge pans for this high tech about eating potatoes on Mars, and hardly any Mars bars, been eating in fall view by Sean Bean. Its a home cinema disappointing for high tech sound. I'd sooner watch HANGAR 18 on laserdisc in MONO for hour and half or GRAVITY (2013) which I'm watching/listening too its a far better film and still doubt no film for dialouge panning will beat GRAVITY before the end of this decade.

Image

The digital hard-drive photography was okay just a sound disappointment that no real effort went into the sound mix. Its more like a comedy than trying to be a serious film.

The Martian might be a film I like to watch over and over again in a few years but its failed to do that in less than day.

I'm not sure. The box says run-time is 90 minutes. IMDb says the movie has a run-time of 88 minutes, so don't know.

Watching Aliens (1986) Dolby Stereo / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional x73

Arrived in the morning post today.

Image

So far the picture looks good for the transfer and age of the PAL laserdisc.

Image

PAL speed-up of the Dolby Stereo mix on this pressing seems to be good with a top end frequency response reaching around 12KHz and down to 31Hz.

The opening has the cymbal Whoosh panning from front to matrix surrounds when the ALIENS title fades out. The top end isn't a problem to re-eq if most find it too much.

The compressed audio on the analog I can get used to fast its still enjoyable.

SW extension can felt pressing on the chest with some bass stage and some occasional bass mid from the surrounds arrays.

Directional sounds fight the compression due to the analog with not too much stress. Matrix surrounds still have the same familiar surrounds effects of the opening music title of ALIENS fading out to a whooshhhh and panning into the surrounds, making me look around with the surrounds naturally defuse the room or the flamethrower when Ripley fires a short burst upwards at the ceiling.

Dialogue is intelligible clear against the effects and music/score.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Disc 1 side 2 CLV a little facehugger rot a few random specs flicking with small faint crackles on the analog sound but once the dynamics of the mix raises up it masks it.

Image

A typical colour flaw due to the brightness/contrast levels where the floodlight on the APC should be white.

No visible EE edge enhancement.

Image
ALIEN chest-buster scene Ripley at the space station, shows a reasonable wide frequency response from 31Hz to 12Khz with score sound effects and dialouge playing.

TrueRTA set at peak hold.

Some portions of the framing curved edges of the 35mm print can be seen.
No cue reel change over dots noticed on this transfer.

Image

CAV side 3 after removing disc after film had finished as I was puzzled as to why the disc stopped suddenly on side 4 as it appears silver blank! So if anyone hasn't already brought this pressing of ALIENS make sure to stop player the moment end credits finish.

Image
Silver blank side.

Repossessed (1990) Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System
Image

Lt-Rt is out of phase on this transfer with centre mix leaking out to LR and matrix surround. I think the same issue was with the rental VHS.

Chapter 14 chase stereo channel check seems to end abruptly when channel check voices "centre channel" that turns to black and then disc ends at 38 minis 06
