Starship Troopers (1997)
Dolby Stereo AC-3 / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional

The laserrot issue on disc 2 side 3 is still about same as last time I played the film over a year and bit ago? I doubt could get worse

The DVD is about near same level as the Laserdisc but the LD has bit of frequency edge over the DVD which is leading me to maybe suspect theatrical. The bluray sounds louder but has less of a low frequency edge over the Laserdisc Dolby AC-3. So Laserdisc wins.

What mysteries will the Laserdisc rot bug hold?

Spinning the bluray after the LD while listening to the surround channels on their own with LCR now and then muted, like to focus on the sound/fx and had cool chat with one the sound editors on the film who kindly explained the weaponry effects. The main weapons used by the troopers is based on the M60 machine-gun that has a bit of popping pop bass mid kick in final mix.

Other things like bugs was handled by many members of the sound/fx team.

I still think the film holds up well for today as modern sci-fi action adventure.

One thought is the large ships and the years or decades maybe centuries to build all that hardware won't take a few years we can barely even build anything as large as the Saturn V and the ISS took about a decade to build or transport payloads of modules up that are just connected together.

Hi Laserbite. How many speakers do you have in your setup? You have a lot of pro gear in your setup, right?

Yeah, sure. 73 speakers and x2 more bass-mid drivers when I bother to get some boxes for them. Its not impossible to fit 7.1 or even further than that in a small room. It would be however impossible to paint a room with one small tiny paint sample though unless you pour the content of it into larger tin it might get a bit watered down for paler colour.

Playing 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) region 2 DVD not that dreadful bluray re-mix that is really far beyond messed up! The DVD is as close to 70mm. I like to get the Dolby AC-3 Laserdisc pressing at some point see what differences I can hear and see on the RTA or spectrum waterfall?

Watched The Martian this evening. Saw it with a friend at his place. Unfortunately he is "average Joe" with the cheapest kind of LCD screen possible with only the built-in speakers and no calibration of any kind done. I really liked the movie, but the smeary and overly bright image with the thin sound ruined the experience a bit. Really laughed with the scene that has the Lord of the Rings reference and Sean Bean! Guess I'll have to watch it again by my own with some speakers that give a good punch.

Gosh! The bass and sub bass LFE.1 goes low deep and loud when the ball stops rumbling whole rotating with slam bass!

Image

Side 2 chapter 11 where crew try to stabilize Justin in the airlock the strobe effect remains smoother over the DVD pressing where it pixels up between strobe effect frames of dark/bright.

Futureworld (1976) MONO / Lucasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional

The DVD is a way too louder over the Laserdisc pressing. The LD sounds better in NTSC at normal speed over the PAL 4% speed-up.

Picture print has bit of now and then damage that looks super cool I like scratches and dirt. Colour tone doesn't have any issues same with the DVD that looks good maybe another upgrade to region 1 DVD since the bluray is region A locked and might be too near-field. Or I can copy the LD to DVD-RW yeah I'll do that later on.

Spinning up the MLD-7020 right now.

First up is Laura Branigan concert. A beautiful lady with an awesome voice, gone far too young.

PQ is decent, not great. It was shot on video. Viewing on my 55" LG LCD. Where all of my LD viewing takes place.

Picked this up at a thrift store a few years ago for $2.

Next up for tonight's movie? Who knows. Funny how it's been months since I've watched a laserdisc, one trip to the forum and the fascination comes back.

Clan of the Cave Bear, The (1986) [6795-80]

Too bad this isn't available in widescreen, really good picture quality. Interesting guess at what prehistory might have been like, kind of slow but it kept my interest. The synth-heavy score was not a great fit, but wasn't horrible in it's own right. Nice Canadian scenery.

just saw STAR WARS; THE FORCE AWAKENS on BRD a couple days ago. first time seeing it, missed out on the theatrical run.

with all the rattle and hum from fellow PIONEER BDP-05FD owners in regards to the player's intolerance
of newer/current make BRDs, i was half expecting my own copy to reject this new SW disc outright.
quite to the contrary, the player played the film straight through without one fault,
as it has with every other BRD i've yet inserted, save for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS DISC 1, which is clearly defective upon closer examination...
