What a great idea....
Surprised that this has not already been manifested .....
Trekkies have been doing that sort of thing awhile....
Would love to see some form of convention take root over time....

I think the first step would be to have LD freaks get together for a movie night/weekend :) We tend to be really spread out though so I'm not sure how that would go.
5 regions- west, east, south, midwest, NE???? As far as the UK , Sweden.... uhmmm, the convention would consist of 3(?) people in the UK- so that could be a hard sell.
Personally though, if the timing worked out I'd take a ride somewhere for it.

I'd be all for it as well. I know quite a few big players who collect music laserdiscs from all around the world many of whom haven't yet posted on this forum - but they do exist.
Although I reside in the UK I have travelled to the US, Japan and most of Europe at different stages.
Just a shame I travelled to those places before I started collecting laserdiscs or so long after the format was discontinued there were almost none left to find!

Good day all,

A laserdisc convention . . . . . . .I love the Idea but the distance would be an issue, as I don't think it would ever be coming to the UK.

Thank you for mentioning this thou.

The closest that I have ever gone for gathering of this kind was ''THE N.E.C. MEMORABILIA SHOW'' in Birmingham UK, as I found people selling Laserdisc's there.

Thank you again. . . . who knows eh'

Plan way in advance to decide on a location should interest gain. Be nice if the news media could pick up on this.

LASERCON! that would be pretty epic! the closest thing I've ever experianced was connecticon last year when they were selling anime laserdiscs. It was pretty cool, a few other LD fans were there buying them and i hung out with them for a while, all young guys like me who had gotten their players off ebay haha

If someone wants to organize one in the Midwest, I'd be interested.

I say everyone should just come to Rochester so I don't have to drive anywhere, being that I'm only 17, lol. A cool concept that I'd love to see happen anywhere. I already thought of a title for a midnight movie showing - the Late Night Laserdisc Matinee

I'd like to hear more about this. I run a video event from anime LDs A-Kon in Dallas, but I haven't heard of anybody selling them since the year I bought some autographed Pioneer discs in the A-Kon charity auction.

Indeed, the last time I ever bought any LDs at an anime convention was at Big Apple Anime Fest in 2002. AnimeJungle was liquidating their stock of new and used LDs. I think most anime retailers were glad to see the format go as they had more space on their trucks for other stock and they didn't have to carry all those heavy discs.

im not sure if they sell them there every year, last year was my first time lol but dealers at conventions don't always come to the same con's every year. I'd like to think this dealer comes every year cuz he did get quite a few sales from me and other people there

The only thing I ever saw in relation to something like this was on Facebook. In New York (as possibly elsewhere) there was a store called Laserland. They had a employees reunion and posted some photos. There was a time when that store was the epitome of laserdisc and through the years had multiple employees.

It wasn't exactly a swap & shop gathering with players and all but it was the first physical gathering I think I've seen and reminded me of the importance of the format.

Facebook might be a good place for other laserdisc groups. I'll have to check around.

Maybe your right, I don't know, Tower records in general, as an entity was big but some stores where small and had to sell other stuff. Laserland sold nothing but laserdiscs and it was quite huge inside. They also rented discs which was a more popular thing than some might know. Good point about the difficulties of a meet up and travel.

did you ever go to laserland, know when it was around or where it was located?
i went to all locations in NYC area that had LDs large or small and have never heard of it.
and even bought the laserdisc newsletter and they never had ads in that, if they did i would have tracked them down.

tower downtown had about the same amount of LDs that ro-disc's store had. midtown had a large sellection but the uptown tower had a really small section.

as for a get-together i would love it but don't think it's cost will work either.

One location was Carle Place NY, that's on Long Island. i heard there was another location but I don't know where. Yes I went to it alot but mostly in the waning days of LD. At one point I went there when dvd came into vogue and the two formats were on the shelves together. Eventually they started selling the LDs from 2 to 5 bucks and I bought several that I still have. Some were rentals that had a rental sticker on the jacket.

I think it opened in the early 90s when LD was at a peak. Check Facebook for more info. They have a photo of the actual outside sign "LASERLAND" on the site. Looks cool, man I miss that.
