Now that I have the recently released Mighty Orbots DVD I was most disappointed to see that it’s a “Warner Archive”, a burn in other words. The master is obviously not new either. I guess I’m glad this FINALLY came out but they could hardly have done a worse job of it. No pilot film either.

I would much rather have an LD.

Ohno, I had all the episodes recorded off of TV back in the day and made my own DVDs.
I know the quality is crap but don't know if I can pay for the burned discs from WA. But I may break down and get it as I did love the show.
Also loved Godmarz.

Watching that Broots on youtube made me realize that they may have used some of the space Cobra music??
I just watched that series about a month ago and can't remember if its that I watched orbots so much or the music is still in my head
from Cobra.

It's a shame Ghost World isn't on Laserdisc. Seems like it would be appropriate.

Orbots isn’t a perfect show but the animation is UNBELIEVABLE. When that show first aired I was really starting to apply myself in learning to draw and in understanding animation techniques. I knew a lot of animation already (in 1984 I was 11 years old) and my favorites were Battle of the Planets, Tranzor Z, GI Joe, Transformers, DIC stuff, I actually liked some Filmation, shorts, etc so I knew about anime and I knew about Disney and I knew about stuff in between but Orbots completely blew my mind from the perspective of animation. It looked, honestly, impossibly good. Stunningly good. Now that I’m much older and have seen waaaay more stuff I still think it’s uniquely high end, even for TMS. I’m still absolutely...delighted, there’s no other word for it, to see that big robot come together. Even Gaogaigar is only slightly ahead and that was way way later, and they would never animate two combinations and one separation for Gaogaigar in that high of quality if they didnt know they were going to run for multiple seasons and sell tons of toys. Never for a 13 eps show with zero merch.

I really wish they would have done a new scan for this though. And that they had actually stamped the thing. Cheap jerks.

And yeah, music from other TMS shows.

I’m amazed at how many drawings from the Pilot Film were reused for the show but massively reworked. I’m used to seeing most stuff thrown out. I suspect they knew the show was going to be made when they did the promo and the gap between producing that and the eventual show was practically nil.

I will now soon start a separate thread for pilot films...

Mighty Orbots was directed by Osamu Dezaki, who also did Ashita no Joe and Space Adventure Cobra.

Yes, it was pretty amazing that they used parts of the pilot and made the animation better.
Its almost like they did the pencil drawings or sketches and just made the cel from that rather than going over in a thicker line.

There was a picture of the Orbots prototype floating around, now it makes sense that the colors were for the Boorts as they were muted like the pilot.

But since I owned Godmarz and never saw the cartoon I just played with that one, or maybe I never had Godmarz when that cartoon was out.
Had a few Godaikin but I may have picked up Godmarz later??

My friend had Godmars. I never did. He was super expensive, even huger than Golion and much less often bootlegged. Chougokin/Godaikin Godmars is one of the all time greats.

This finally got released in the US on an SD BD. Includes the series, movie and oav. It's on my to get list at some point. Not sure exactly when though, since it just came out I should have awhile for it to be in print. I just snagged some BD movies and Ranma set 7 BD to close out my set since some of these Ranma BD sets are already going out of print which is typical of Viz so I am done purchasing media this month.

Ugh, I'm sort of glad now that I didn't pickup the box set on ebay.
But now I can't sell the bootleg DVDs I have, they were selling for 60 a box.
I do have that film on LD and its super rare for LD but now that its on SDBR maybe not so much.

Also its sort of a fun but boring show, the first half, about 30 some episodes ends and then there is a new badguy and the show almost feels like its
the same all over again for 30+ episodes.
Don't binge it or you will really feel it LOL

Edit:
Why is the name changed to God Mars, as two words, I've always seen it as one but possibly different spelling.
Godmars Godmarz.

I feel like a lot of anime are that way. Sometimes it's exactly what you want (especially after watching a movie such as as Sansho the Bailiff) just some nice fun comfort food. My go tos for that are generally Lupin, City Hunter and Ranma.

That reminds me of when ET announced the pricetag for their Laserion and I found it completely absurd because you could literally get the Godaikin for less. The original also has the cool collapsible frame gimmick.

Unfortunately the ET version also replicated the add-on armor which was never released under the Godaikin line so that would fetch significantly more.

How could I forget this one?
Obvious candidate for a LD release!

It could even fit on a single CAV side!

I stumbled across that a few days ago. I feel sad and happy at the same time with that for some reason.

There are a few anime I wish were on LD. Mainly the stuff I have on VHD from Victor like Cosmos Pink Shock, Marine Snow no Densetsu, Dead Heat, Bari Bari Densetsu OVA (LD got the movie compilation but not the OVAs, you lose some good stuff in the movie), SCOOPERS etc. The low VHS quality of VHD does not do them justice.

There also a lot of fun OVAs I've seen that never made it past VHS. I think one I have is called High School Detective? A 2 part TOEI OVA that I quite liked. Money Wars was another. I am sure there would be too much to name for VHS->LD wishes.

Even worse when some eps were on LD but not others. I have a 4 part Columbia series I cannot remember the name of that only had the first 2 eps on LD. Of course there is also BAVI STOCK2 not being on LD. That is not such a waste as it was not a looker like the first one. It was pretty rubbish in general!

I really like the bit in Big Daddy when the kid gets to pick his own name and goes with Frankenstein

I seem to recall a similar thread or just going through a "groundhog day moment" .....

Pitch Black comes to mind as it was scheduled for release and then given cancelled status in finality.
Loved the Chronicles of Riddick Trilogy. Pitch Black is still a good revist after all these years and all the times replayed ! (IMO)

Would have loved "Rogue One" on LaserDisc being the only piece of work worth acknowledgement since Team Disney took over George's Mythology.
(again, IMO !)

To my son's dismay I will not be viewing the next installment of Star Wars due out in December 2019.
I will live at peace that Episodes IV/V/VI will ever more be the gold standard in my memories, Episode I/II/III were decent installments with critiques. At least the prequels were palatable unlike the unmentionable team disney desecration of the continuation of the franchise.
(again, IMO !)

At some point you have to walk away realizing that better movies exist elsewhere, even without the comforting franchise naming. You’re not obligated to see every movie with the same first two words in the title. I know you’ve seen a great number of movies so I’m not surprised you made this choice.

But beware, eventually you being open minded enough to question the greatness of new Star Wars movies may lead to you questioning the greatness of the old ones...and then what? What happens when you have to admit that not even Empire is that great compared to Bladerunner...or even one of the better episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation?* Are you sure you don’t want to just be an obedient fan? It’s a lot easier that way. Super fans never question anything, they just buy it every time.

Also, most people (I’m not including myself here, but most people...) never enjoy anything as much as they enjoyed stuff when they were six so it’s hopeless asking someone to push that button again. It’s already been pushed so many times it’s fallen off! Push another button!

When I saw Star Wars at six years old I didn’t know what “physics” was. I could barely read, I knew nothing of history or politics, romance, geography, or even much beyond the most basic notion of causality. It was an appealing movie but to a six year who doesn’t know squat it’s weapons grade escapism...that gets less powerful the more you grow to understand the world. I was clueless when I saw Star Wars and it was exactly the movie for me. I’m less clueless now though, aren’t you?

“It’s the story of a young man on his quest to discover the hero he’s meant to be or some blah blah.” Who cares about one guy in a story that huge? It’s all so gunslinger and dumb, that Star Wars stuff. I follow sci-fi because I’m interested in the future of the human species, where we go, the problems we solve, the problems we create, things like that. I don’t care if a guy can finally kill some other guy. I can get that in every other genre. And seriously, the idea that someone would travel to a different star system just to kill something is ridiculous. With the amount of energy it takes to travel that far you could achieve almost anything, why kill some guy? It’s doesn’t hold up to any critical thought at all. Are the 10,000 crew on that ship also really into killing that guy? Oh, of course they are, they’re clones...just like the fans.

* seriously, there have to be at least 15 episodes of Next Gen that are better than any Star Wars movie...easily.
