It's always surprising to me when movies that were made in the LD heyday aren't on LD. |

Lord of the Rings extended Trilogy LD BOX (CAV) At about 11.5 hours that’s 23 sides assuming you get lucky breaks and no bonus. Enough bonus footage exists to double the running time if not multiply it by six. Obviously bonus would be CLV so figure...14 discs? Maybe 15? Worth buying an LD-W1 for, sadly it doesn’t exist. If it did...it would have cost $1000 street and bored us to tears all over again but the number of side changes would probably cause the average Tolkien fan to lose a pound or two, not to mention the muscle building one gets from hauling a LD box that weights 25 pounds to all your friends houses. |

I wish that "Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother" was released on LaserDisc. Ironically this title was released on CED ! ! ! Now if any of the membership are not familiar with this Gene Wilder, Marty, Feldman, and Madeline Kahn epic then attend : YOU MUST SEE IT ! Disclaimer : there is high risk of breaking one or more ribs while viewing...... Released circa 1975, this member first saw this movie on HBO around 1977. Needless to say it left an impression ! If you liked Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and High Anxiety then you may find The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother quite appealing..... Check it out ..... Looks quite good, and on BD thankfully. Maetel Legend. Because I'd rather try to source the LD of it than pay $30+ for an old CPM DVD. Hopefully Discotek finds it profitable to release some of the fringe Galaxy Express stuff like this. |

Haha that would be awesome, Im yet to watch the lord of the rings trilogy even though it was film on this island. Is the extended version really worth all the extra time? |

Bad CGI made me avoid Lord of the Rings. Not that interested anyway, never read the books even though my Mom was a huge fan and even read, owned and understood the Silmirillion. My Mom had a lot of books. I hate books, maybe because I hate my Mom? Nah it's just because books are boring, suck and are for nerds |

I also didn't have an issue watching old movies long enough to have an intermission in one go. Also if you think CGI is overused in LOTR, hoo boy, the Hobbit Trilogy. LOTR at least they ended up using a lot of practical effects and make-up while using CGI to supplement. |

Yeah I always see the extended versions as the un-compromised ones Jackson would have preferred to be released in theaters. CAV of the entire trilogy would be ridiculous, but on CLV it would be possible for each film to be released in a 2-disc gatefold a la the Star Wars Trilogy (except for extended ROTK, I guess we'll throw in a one sided CAV). The adaptation isn't perfect - neither is the CG - but LOTR was literally considered unfilmable for decades. Jackson's team poured their talent, heart and soul into the project and that comes through on screen. |

As for the films / books, I've only read the Hobbit and that's a story for another time....... Couldn't stand his writing and very hard to read, kept jumping back and forth for such a long book. Never wasted the time reading the others. But I do own the films on DVD but would never spend more on them. I believe I picked up all 3 extended for something like 10 or 12 total with free shipping. |

I paid $15 for the BD set from Bestbuy many years ago. It was on sale and I used a gift certificate on top of that. |

I only saw the theatrical versions once though and that was in the theater so when I think of these movies I only think of the extended versions. There’s a lot of walking on that tree’s shoulders and the last movie feels like it will never end but overall you want the long versions. |
