For me Ive noticed so many of the earlier releases, in terms of when the film was made, not when it came out on laserdisc... is good quality....the boxset of Jason and the Argonauts is great quality, although the films age lets it down....alot of films released in the time between 1989-1995 all suffer from poor DNR applied,to where it actually makes the films look worse with smearing and other sorts of digital playing.....but the films released all before this was commonplace is actually quite better, its just the age of technology at the time wasnt that great to make the films look better....Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has a very good transfer, just a cartoon tho,but shows the film alot closer to the theatrical version than the recent releases......

Rush Hour is a great one
The Thomas Crown Affair 1998 is superb
Frenck Kiss
Babys Day Out

One of the worst Ive noticed is Basic Instinct......Side A has a great transfer with strong colours, but Side B is disgraceful with weak blacks and washed out colour.....almost like its the original work print placed on instead.....

I haven't seen any CAV stuff yet, but the Criterion release of Nostalghia is very crisp. Almost DVD quality. I was really surprised at how nice it looked.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - CAV release - great picture with a filmic look.

The Quick And The Dead - PAL release, sharp picture and a nicely done Laserdisc.

I agree. It's definitely one of the best looking LD's I have.

I'm watching this

now and am very impressed with the image. It is great for an older pressing (1991).

I'd say that Toy Story and Who Framed Roger Rabbit stand out out for clarity, clean and with really sharp images. Of non-animated discs, I'd say Triple Tribble Trouble seems particularly clear, but its one I tend to watch more often than my other disks, so there may be others that are better. I should mention that these are all PAL discs - I don't get anywhere near as good quality with NTSC so I can't compare them.

I'm not that much into mainstream films (especially not on LD, since I have most of them on DVD/Blu-Ray),
but some of the finest LD releases quality-wise (also in comparison to the same titles' presentations on
other formats) for me are:

Tombs of the Blind Dead (La Noche del Terror Ciego) (1971) (Uncut) [EE8662]
Elite Entertainment, USA
Superb quality presentation of this classy Spanish horror film, absolutely on par with the later
DVD from Blue Underground (which was great as well, but not as great)

Phantasm: Widescreen Collector's Edition (1979) [ID3396SU]
Image Entertainment, USA
Still the best-looking (and sounding) version of the film ever, IMHO

Hellraiser 4: Bloodline (1996) (Uncut) [NF 25101-LD]
Astro Records & Filmworks, Germany
Stunning transfer for the 4th Hellraiser installment

Dagora the Space Monster ((Uchu daikaijû Dogora)) (1964) [TLL 2427]
Toho Video, Japan
BEAUTIFUL print of this rarely seen Japanese monster film on LD, blows the
Tokyo Shock DVD of the same title out of the water IMHO. Many Japanese special effects films
from the Showa era (1954-1975) look stunning on laser.

Chuushingura gaiden: Yotsuya kaidan (Crest of Betrayal) (1994) [BELL-905]
Bandai/Emotion, Japan
Beautifully shot film beautifully presented on laserdisc, a sharper transfer with richer colours (very important
for this film) than the later Japanese DVD release (as far as I know, there exists no legit release on any format outside
of Asia for this film).

Most LDs that have gotten the THX treatment will have a good picture quality.

Robocop: Special Edition (1987) [CC1350L] is one of the few titles I own to be done in CAV like this. On my player, it looks like a straight DVD with better color timing.

Child's Play 2, Pinocchio's Revenge, Wild Wild West widescreen release, and Austin Powers widescreen release for the colors. I stand by that Child's Play 2 is the best looking laserdisc for 4:3 aspect ratio. The CAV side is something really special. I post screen captures on the screenshot thread and you can look at Child's Play 2. It's a gorgeous laserdisc release. I own the third movie on laserdisc and that one isn't half bad either but specifically Child's Play 2 looks great especially with the last 20 minutes or so of the movie on the CAV side.

3 screens from the CAV side of Child's Play 2. I believe this was captured on my CLD-99. I'm sure I listed what I captured it on in the screenshots Topic.

From the few I have, I'm gonna say that probably most of the late anime releases (1999 and onwards) really look astonishing.

Goldeneye: Special Edition (1995) [ML105544]
Certainly is worth a mention

I agree. I mentioned this in another thread with the same topic. I don’t like Goldeneye as a movie at all, it’s very dumb and bad, like most Bond, but that LD is maybe the single all around best LD I own (excepting the quality of the actual film). Sound, picture, everything is awesome.

I think the CBS FOX LaserDiscs from the 80s look great (and sound great too)

Forgot to mention Ernest Scared Stupid. That's a really beautiful release and possibly the best CLV can look on the format. These screens were captured on my Panasonic LX-900 so not my CLD-99. The LX-900 is a beast but the biggest complaint about the player is that it cuts off about 5 percent of the right side of the screen. Oh yeah, these were also caught on Elgato non-hd. I prefer to capture on Hauppauge for the higher bitrate. Elgato has a bitrate of around 2megs which shockingly is a bit low for laserdisc release. It can cause bitrate issues usually more noticeable in motion.

There's quite a few 4:3 movies that look gorgeous on laserdisc and maybe the laserdisc player determines the overall quality. Since I believe my LX-900 and CLD-99 are ranked as higher end players for picture quality. If memory serves me correctly Demonic Toys, Dollman vs Demonic Toys, and many other 4:3 films are also beautiful looking. Also, anime in general will look good on laserdisc. At least at 4:3. I have never seen a widescreen anime release on laserdisc and I don't know how that looks but i'd imagine 4:3 is going to usually Win. Cartoons in general look great on laserdisc but I feel like if I mention how great Charlie Brown cartoons look on it that it's a bit cheating. Those are also in CAV format since each episode of Charlie Brown is short.

Star Trek Insurrection.

James Bond Goldeneye. Tomorrow Never Dies.

Star Wars the Phantom Menace.

The Star Wars Special Edition trilogy. Nice transfers except for the color timing being all wrong.
