Yesterday I wrote an article about various versions of The Thing:

http://blog.sporv.com/disentangling-the-thing/

as this is THE place to find info about laserdiscs, I wonder if an owner of the Signature Collection could help me.

I'm trying to find out if the AC-3 track is the "real" one using the 4-track stem (or the 6-track magnetic tape master).

The best way to understand it would be to capture the AC-3 track itself, but I don't know if there is someone with the knowledge AND the technology AND the will to do that!

But there is another way to find it out; a surround system is needed, though.
Select the AC-3 track, and just go around 15m, when "Superstition" is playing; check if the song is playing from the surround speakers continuosly after Naul's shot, or just briefly only when the meeting room is shown.

Thanks in advance!

I own a copy of The Thing Signature Edition (I think my copy is the USA release) and also am able to capture AC-3 audio and decode it, as well as DTS.

I don't really have the capacity to set it all up and do it right now, but just putting it out there in case you are looking for someone to help you with this in the future. I'll try my best!

Also, this may help you if you want to try capturing the audio yourself if you end up getting a copy of the film?

@teddanson: thank you very much, it would be GREAT to have it captured - no problems with sync, I'd just need the untouched capture; a time frame would be also really appreciated - one week? one month? one year? ;)

I'm aware to capture AC-3/DTS tracks, but I do not have the disc nor I have the chance to capture it if I had, as I'm far away from my rig and I don't know when I would be able to...

@cplusplus: great! Check Nauls when answering "Read buana, will do" (as subtitles, but I hear "Oui buana"... oh, whatever!) on the surround channels (you must put your ear really close to, if not in contact with, the speaker - or better, disconnect all the speakers but the surround ones) - and report what you hear on both AC-3 and PCM tracks.

MANY MANY THANKS TO BOTH!!!

Thanks for the test!!!

Last question...
there are two versions:
Image

1) there is wind, then a thumping sound like "duhm duhm duhm" for 4s; then the song abruptly starts at (relatively) high volume for about 20s, then volume gets very low for another 20s, then volume gets mid for the rest of the song, then song stops and after few seconds of silence music fades in
2) there is wind, then no song for 8s after the wind; then song starts and you can hear (barely, as it's very faint) "there is superstition writing on the wall, there is superstition" for about 16s, then it's at very low volume (almost impossible to hear) for about 15s, then volume gets high for only 5s, then volume gets low again for the rest of the song until the wind blows again

May you spot which version the AC-3 is? This is very important to understand which is which...

Optional: if you can also make a comparison with PCM it would be perfect!

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Oh man. I am not the right person for this :|

It didn't follow either description exactly to me. If I had to pick, I would say #1 but that is with uncertainty.
